Oh yeah. Having grown up in a cold country I know this woman is dressed to resist the cold – note the overlapping gloves and coat sleeves. However she does it so elegantly and playful; the striped Kenzo gloves, and that cap in a wooly material. Not to mention her patterned checked coat, and those army green pants all topped with a nicely tied scarf. LOVE! You do a great job, Scott.

LOL! Having grown up in even colder country( Moscow, Minneapolis, Chicago) , I know that a coat that is so billowy would do absolutely nothing to keep you warm, even if the jacket underneath would break the wind, nor would that awesome Kenzo cap, which doesn’t cover your ears, and although I love the shoes, they wouldn’t keep up with actually below freezing weather for a minute, especially with no socks, but then it never gets really cold in Paris, so why would she know that? But I do love her look. Even if its only good for 40 degrees or above.

But I like the look of Parisians in the snow. Out of their comfort zone, they get so creative.
Funny how the way we dress for winter differs a lot from a culture to another. Even in Canada, Torontonians don’t dress like people in Quebec, even if we have a similar weather.
(We’re best dressed. But I may be partial.)

Its interesting how we all see style…if I hadn’t analyzed the image I would have said she’s dressed weird (having considered the weather). But I must stay after actually looking at what she’s got on I really like her jacket…and she doesn’t look weird. But she neeeds socks! Lol

Well the bare ankles are key to making this look work, rare is the picture of a chic lady without some skin on show somewhere. Add socks and she’d be a bit frumpy (but also warm ;-) )

I agree, hobo for sure. Its just a plain mess to me. I love most of the pics on this blog, but not this one! I think most outfits have to look just a tiny tad contrived, so they look deliberate, but this looks thrown on without much thought.

As someone who knows what its like to dress when its really cold -20 to -30, this isn’t it. I suspect its not really that cold — she didn’t bother to put on socks — and she threw on a poncho, big scarf and gloves. She is dressed more for style than warmth.

I actually had a friend from Italy and France( she lives in both variously) visit me once in the winter. It was so unspeakably funny what a wuss she was I still laugh about it. But at least she was smart enough to know what she could handle. Cold weather can be dangerous. So, no this is just for when its just bellow freezing and snowing. Not to mention when it gets really cold, gloves don’t help. You just keep your hands in your sleeves or pockets and wait until you get indoor to do anything. I know first hand. Its 14 bellow outside right now. So..come on, no BS.

Ok..She looks so adorable, and the Kenzo stuff is starting to grow on me. Its bright and fun and uplifting. Its great outfit for warmer snowy weather. After all, its usually NOT so cold when it snows, the cold comes later. So it IS good for snowy weather. I love that she is making the most of it.

What I like so much about her sans-sock statement is the fact that it probably isn’t a statement at all. Thats the beauty of the Sartorialist, these are everyday people who do in fact dress for everyday life.
And sometimes people just don’t have time to dig out their snow-socks.

The shoes; Bernhard Willhelm for Camper and quite possibly the most inappropriate footwear choice for the following reasons:
1. The shallow tread pattern would be treacherous on icy surfaces.
2. The cavities created by the wave of rubber in the sole hold snow which would melt once indoors (this is evident in the photo).
3. The shoe is a cemented construction which perform poorly in wet conditions in the long run.
4. The shoe incorporates mesh panels.
Should have spent the same dough on a pair of Diemme.

I have to say that I don’t think those shoes and those bare ankles would survive a walk in the snow… I walk everyday 30 minutes in the snow to get to my office (I love walking in the snow: the bright crispy air, the peace of the total white look of the city…) but I need boots that almost cover my knees!!!

She has a wonderful silhouette and I love the plaid cape. However this is most certainly not what I would describe as snow wear. The cape offers no protection and would be damp and therefore horribly cold very quickly. Also the well documented sock situation. It’s snowing here in the UK and I can’t imagine going out without socks aaaaarrrrgh the idea of it! I hope she doesn’t get chill blames. But she does look wonderful.

I agree with most of the posts here, in that she would not last in ‘real cold’. I live in Calgary Alberta and right now we are enjoying a ‘mild’ winter, one which doesn’t include -30 degree C temperatures for a week at a time. I wear big parkas with goose down and large clumpy boots that will stick to the ice and not let me fall. When I get inside, I roast, and have to strip everything off in overheated buildings. Hah!

I understand that this photo exhibits warmth but it hardly radiates grace! It looks like she may have rolled out of bed and put on some overly trendy freebies that she got while working in PR. I believe in grace, elegance and putting oneself together. I hardly see this here! I feel exhausted looking at it, not to mention I can almost smell her feet while looking at it! I am certain about how the women in Paris are chatting about her as she walks about presenting her self in this “I don’t care” manner yet she is too self-conscious and confused on how to properly dress herself. This shouldn’t be celebrated!

This is how I’d be dress in the cold and I live in New England. I absolutely hate dressing for winter. Even when I go outside I don’t put socks under my boots. I deal with the consequences later. I quickly warm up when I get inside of wherever I’m going.
I hate winter. I hate bulky coats. I hate covering up my clothes. Scarves make me feel stiff. I hate hats. I hate gloves. I like being free of all those things and just being able to leave the house without all that extra stuff.

I love the overall look! The cape is wonderful! I live in Toronto and we are currently under a cold weather alert (three days and still going strong!) I find the colder months really inspire a layered look with mixes of both masculine and feminine pieces, as seen here. I can’t seem to stop myself from obsessing over flat lace up boots, plaid blazers, wool capes and men-inspired overcoats.
On the sock or no sock debate; I’ve never been a fan of cold-weather shoes without socks because I like my feet to be extra cozy. My mother, on the other hand (who loves fashion as much as I do!), rarely ever wears socks. To each his own! ;)

I think some people are missing the point here, I do not follow your blog on a daily bases but from what I’ve seen from here and there it seems that Scott focuses on interesting looks rather than “what should be”, he finds beauty where others may not see it and that is what I think is great about this woman and her outfit not whether is “the right” clothing for freezing weather. So much time is spend on “what should be” that people forget to see beyond their own noses sometimes. But again everyone is entitled to their own opinion just think some opinions are better off not written or blurted out.

Some people may just be commenting “what should be” but not all of us are in that boat. There are some “architectural” fashion facts in his photography too and sometimes it does not get harder than “what works” and “what does not work” in a capture.

Coming from a cold weather place, sorry, I have to say that you can’t dress like this on a snowy day. This hat would freeze your ear, (rule #1: when it’s cold, make sure to wear something that covers up your ears), no socks and sneakers? Not to mention those flimsy gloves. Maybe Paris has a different temperature when it’s snowing?
