On the Street….Slim Lumberjack, Pitti Uomo

This whole “Urban Lumberjack/Heritage” trend can get a bit bulky and unflattering, don’t you think?

With all the layers of flannels and thermals and buffalo plaids even a skinny guy can look overstuffed – or overfed.

Leave it to an Italian, such as the gentleman above, to find a way to slim down the look and make it a flattering one. The trick is the slim cut KNIT(!) peacoat. A popped collar doesn’t hurt, either.

I find it's fascinating, how despite the globalised world we live in, so many countries have their own distinctive ways of dressing.
And I love seeing all the Pitti Uomo photos, just because it's a proper focus on men's clothes (albeit exclusively Italian-style), which isn't always the case.

Great look! I definitely like the peacoat. I always had trouble embracing the "lumberjack" style simply because I, like the guy in the photo, am most definitely not built like a lumberjack.

those look like redwing moc toe boots. i'd stay away from them just for the sake of their white soles. i know it's all the rage/trend, but after one wearing they forever look dirty and gray. if you're gonna go with redwing boots, go for their black/leather soles.

There is quite a number of coats / overcoats which I would love to see in similar slim versions. Moncler has some slim "doudounes" (even an oxymoron). In the past few years, we have witnessed a few slimmer anoraks (including one from Balmain), or Varsity jackets which don't taper at the bottom and therefore have a slimmer look (including one from… Balmain); perfectos*/asymetrical biker jackets that are slimmer (including some from Balenciaga, the great yet underrated Barnabé Hardy and… Balmain).

I am very glad. I can only condone that trend. I have spent years buying coats or overcoats and taken them to the tailor immediately to get the waist taken in, so that I would get that X or even Y shape I love… Now, there is quite a lot of clothing which shape I do like.

i love this coat. My husband is one of those men that likes his shirts loose, his pants loose, and his coats bulky, but he's slim and i am convinced he'd look great in something like this. Does anyone have a suggestion where i could find something like this online? we live in Montréal.

    • Daniel

      March 12, 2013 at 11:10 am

Try Yoox. They have good selection.
Offline in Montreal, try Simons or Zara for budget friendly versions. I find Club Monaco also has nice fitting basics. If budget is not an issue, then most designer stores, especially European ones should work.

I'm not feeling too much "lumber jack" going on here at all except for the boots, and being an old combat boot wearing 80's girl, I've got to love his boots. He needs to pull his pants up. Great boots, great top. But pull the pants up, makes him look like a kid. It looks like he does not have a butt.

This styles has been seen in the north-west coast (basically a uniform) for at least the past 5 years. Maybe more.

Technical jackets like this can be found at many Outdoors type stores.

Honestly, this guy thought maybe five seconds about putting this outfit together. It works, sure. (despite the baggy-butt pants) but is it sartorial?

I'm curious about his multi-directional hair. It almost looks like he has a fur head band across the top of his brow. I like this whole urban lumberjack look and the slimmer is definitely a better way of doing it. Even though it's a knit, the collar really has some nice body to it to stand up like that.

Also, I agree with "HMS" who mentioned that he really needs better-fitting trousers, no?

There is nothing "Lumberjack" about his outfit. I don't understand that reading. His worker boots don't communicate that either—and there is nothing trendy about them at all. In fact, they are probably the antithesis of trendy. He just looks like a normal guy—stylish, but not a fashion minion who is trying too hard to look chic. He's also not slimming down the look—he's slim. I must admit… he does look great, though!

    Cheers!

Chris @ 1:25: So many companies make that style of boot that it's hard to determine the exact make. They look like Red Wing boots to me, but they usually don't have silver eyelets for the shoelaces. They could be an older model, though. They're probably an overpriced Italian knock-off of traditional work boots.

If you're thinking of buying this kind of boot go for Redwing or Thorogood moc toe as the shape is better and they age really well.

Btw this workwear look has been popular in London/Brighton for over a decade now since we could get the brands (Carharrt/Dickies/Redwing etc) here in the UK (although it's way cheaper and way more fun to come and get them from NY) I like the way that english brands like Barbour are so poular in NY too – it's all a great big fashion melting pot!

I don't know if I'm seeing things but his pea coat looks like a good quality polar fleece on my monitor, although can't tell if it's pullover or zip up. If this is so, this style of dress is very common here on the rural and semi rural outskirts of Sydney and has been for years (decades) really.

To be more stylish and stay more true to rural, a woollen jacket /pea coat would work best.

Deep navy on deep blue denim with earth brown quality leather can never look bad IMHO! A white shirt for the ladies and a cotton check country shirt for the guys underneath is then perfect on the eyes for warmer days.

This guy has a very cute smile!
