This is a very different style from what you would normally see in Korean streets. Not a lot of people where outfits like this and I'm glad that you captured it.
You see a lot of people in Korean movies that dress like this but I think it's the Japanese influence.
From all the times I've been in Korea, I think I've never seen anyone dress like this or have I ever imagined.
Overall, I love his color matching with tone variation of NAVY. His coat, jacket and pants looks so neatly and consistently arraged, but he also keeps uniqueness by details like the patterned scarf, the hat with wide visor and fur on the coat. What I admire most in his look is his pants wich has belt loops like a normal slacks but is banded like a training. It is interesting… I think I would buy a pants like that if I can find!
I remember living in South Korea as a child (military parents) back in 92. The Korean girls walked around with the smallest backpacks that could have been the size of purses. We thought it was hilarious, but 3 years later, back in the states, those little backpack purses became all the rage. This photo is amazing because it brings back those memories. His style is nothing new to him, but it brings a sense of freshness to all of us. Thanks for this!!!
It's interesting how he's partly wearing women's items and yet it's still a very masculine look. And the fur collar looks great – not many men seem to go for fur, but I think it looks really classy.
Overall, I like his color matching which is based on tone variation of navy – his coat, jacket and pants looks neatly arranged. Also he keeps his personal uniqueness by a hat with wide visor, fur on the coat and patterned scarf. However what I admire most is his pants, which has belt loops like a normal slacks but also banded openings like a training pants. I think I would try that kind of pants if I can find one!
I love this… Ok, for his own sake, I wish he weren't smoking. But it channels Wilde, he's elegant, he's his own man. I worked in Seoul covering the Olympics in 1988– it was not, then, a place where people seemed encouraged to express their individuality. The hat, the scarf, the French boatman's t-shirt — the shoes!!! — what a beautiful moment. Thanks as always for capturing it.
I never knew such a cool man in South Korea. However, it is not very Asia. I expect you to find people who is in fashion like nobody else in Europe and America.
crazy combination but seems to work! love how he pulls of fur, formal cut of the coat and a classic hat with leopard slippers, comfy wool socks, slouchy elastic band pants WITH A BELT, whilst holding a cigarette in a very suave manner ;)
omg! can't believe you're in seoul now! what a great picture. it's freeeezing in seoul at this time so it's extreamly challenging to dress fashionably. but this man looks awesome.

WOW just have to write something only to be the first one with a comment hehe incredible !! ;-) Ok here we go: LOVE your work and the way you present it! Seems like you really enjoying your life and the what´s in there for you. I do admire that! All the best / Eugen Szmit
Loved the mini documentary made about you. I am so glad that now people can see the genius behind tha camera. Amazing work Love from http://secretfling.wordpress.com/
This dude's style is siiiick! Great pic, as per usual! :) My sister and I are stoked about you being in Korea! Visit more countries and take more pics!!!!
Interesting subject to say the least. Good nutrition has given him larger frame than most Koreans. Note the hand larger than the pant pocket. The pant legs tucked away at socks…clever.
I was really looking for this, coz I'm Korean!!! I hope you have a very great time in here. If I find you in the street I'll scream, then you have to take a picture of me :)
sauve, its the fine toned attention to detail that brand this man articulate, from the ever-so well balanced hat, to the molten streaks of gold in the scar, the fine well cut collar of fur, to the casual elegance of the brown leopard slippers – fashion is instinct, instinct is human
WOW. he is a famous model in korea. he is so dandy and stylish. how did you meet him on the street? by accident? haha im super glad you are in seoul right now. i wanna be taked by you some day!
WOW. dandy and stylish! he is a famous model in korea. how did you meet him on the street? by accident? im so glad you are in seoul. i wanna be taken by you someday!
1. Abgujung(chungdam-dong); in seoul nice area, fancy-ish, good cafes and restaurants, many fashion-related people hang out there. Cafes, etc that I recommend: Paper Garden, Zen, Mui-Mui, Queen You can just walk around the area and find many nice things- best time would be a weekend afternoon/ nighttime.
2. Hongdae(Hongik university); in seoul - that area is kinda symbol of young people's fashion and clubs. so many youngs(20`s) are spending their night time in that area and your friend could find out unique fashioned people easily. -recommended time?kk: friday night… you know… clubs..
3. insadong; in seoul - as you know Insadong is very traditional area. Not as much fashion, but a great place to visit. Beautiful tea shops and places for rice-cakes and tea, old traditional buildings, traditional restaurants where you sit on hardwood floors and eat great food. GREAT tea/rice-cake house:
4. Jungjadong; in Bundang - JungJadong is usually called "imitation of abgujung cafe road). cuz it is built by urban planing few years ago but so famous in korea now.
I love this for so many reasons… would it work without the cigarette? The trousers are amazing, the belt, the pleat, the pocket, the Cuff. And oh, the slippers.
Hm, such an intriguing composition. Part of a gondolier (the Tshirt), part gangster (moustache and hat), part Eastern aristocrate (fur collar). I wonder what did he mean by the bouffant leg and Norwegian socks. Yet, a little too feminine the scarf. Anyway, more than catchy his look…
Though it can get pretty cold in Korea, I love how he doesn't look hidden under many layers. I like the cleanliness of the look, it makes it easier to pay attention to the scarves, striped shirt, socks and shoes :)
this man could star in a film, I love the way he looks at us… so serious and almost cracking a smile, and his clothes too, he looks like a gangster taking a break in the middle of dressing himself ! Greetings from Spain
At first I thought this gentleman just threw on some clothes to grab a smoke outside but then I saw the belt on his track pants, who makes track pants with belt loops? Wow.
I love the colour combination and his expression. The scarf and his striped shirt makes the overall look balanced. Hoop he's not in illegal bussiness and even if he is, then he must be the most well dressed one :D
wow…are those sweatpants or what?! i mean i like the combo dressed up/dressed down, and i dont at the same time. very navy. glad he has that scarf with some gold in it. it might all be too matchy though? i mean the butt of the cigarette matches his scarf. haha
I think he looks pretty darn natty. I love the striped shirt (French influence) with the rust and blue scarf. Also the fedora. His jacket over his suit is lovely.
Cannot imagine he is wearing the good old 'Charentaises', popular French slippers that nobody hip would wear, unless of course they become the next Must-that-everybody-should-wear.
Love the combination of the sailor-inspired t-shirt and scarf arrangement with the 30's mafia-reminding hat and coat with fur collar together with the contemporary "soft-slackers"!!
This guy is famous in Korea, actually he is not a public star, but a distinguished model. I saw your old post, you must be in Korea now, right? I recommend you to go "Hong Ik University". You can reach there by subway line number 2. That station name is "Hong Dae Ip Gu". If you have time to visit another cities, I would like to say that you'd better visit Busan and Daegu. If you have a question, please let me know.
Whoa! What a photo! The shoes! The socks! The shoes and sox together! The knit trouser cuff… the navy, brown and white palette – the gold pattern, ten thousand words….
Oh, for me, this is much like from a Wong Kar Wai film! The fur and the (somewhat funny!) socks make the look. Still most of all I am intrigued by the person. What gentle but firm features! A very film-like image for someone from Europe.
I am so much looking forward to more images. Thanks a lot
What an expression! It plainly renders me speechless how he has managed to speak so much of himself through a single outfit, it really appears to match his intentions!
as for the smoking issue, look, it's not healthy and people know it, but the simple truth is people DO still smoke and Mr. Schuman takes pictures of people doing what they are doing, he doesn't usually "stage" a shot. OK?
Wow, if I had a dollar for every person who excitedly commented that this guy was a "famous Korean model!" Geezh. I think they might be more impressed with a friend, or colleague, or other unknown. Aren't there any not-in-the-biz fashionistas in Korea? My first impression (mind you, I've never seen the guy before, nor would I care that he is a "famous Korean model") was simply PIMP.
i can't get over how great this man looks- you captured him perfectly. He seems to be from another time . . . .so much is said with so little. thank you!
he looks too cool. why don't americans dress like this? its so creative. i love that the bottom half is basically pajamas, and the top half belongs to a high society country man/sailor.
Love this look. Gene Kelly meets Kid Creole with just a whiff of Quentin Crisp. How does he pull off a fur collar and a knotted silk scarf without looking dainty? He's got mad swagger, that's how.
From the ankles up, he's stunning. He's also a very famous model here, so you're off to a great start. Sinsa-dong and Hongdae are the best for people spotting.
Regardless of how stunning the look is, I can't help but to mention that the whole shot looks a bit fakish. Maybe it's the combination of how famous the model is in Korea and how irrelavent the look is to actual Korean look. And trust me, that scarf just can't keep you warm enough to stay outside in this season of Korea.
I absolutely love this outfit and this photo. I think it is my favourite outfit and character you have ever photographed! The tracksuit bottoms, the exquisite yellow scarf, the fur collar, the hat, the moustache, the pose, the gesture…what a dandy, what a flaneur.
I think I said this before, but really if you could find interesting high school/middle school age students and take pictures of them that would be so cool. It would be fun to see people closer to my own age looking fashionable.
Ohhhh…I loved.. I want you to come here in Egypt You will find many things interesting to see and to capture..i like this picture really…have a great days ..:)
Hahaha! The fact that THE SARTORIALIST posted a picture of Bae Jungnam is such a failure it's funny. He is one of the most well known fashionista in Korea… a fashionista on the bad side, that is. Pretentious Koreans getting punched in the face. Sweet.
The pants remind me of the older gentleman wearing tan ostrich skin Hermes sneakers with gray sweat pants lounging at the Hyundai Department Store a few years back…
It was a weird combination…but his attitude made it all work…just like this guy makes all this crazy pieces work with his attitude.
ha! it seems everyone is suprised you snapped one of the popular Korean models – like he just happened to cross your path…im suprised people dont realise how professional you are Sart in the direction you have taken your blog and being involved in the fashion industry…i do wonder whats random and whats staged…having said that i still love your blog and get inspired by your images all the time!
Oh awesome that you're in Seoul! I love the fashion from here, especially on the guys. This guy looks great… Can't wait to see what else you have in store for us.
Did you stage this shot? Is it a from a fashion shoot? It is so impeccably styled that it just can't be "real"! Leopard print slipper-like shoes, comfy socks, sweat pants lookalikes, Hermes looking scarf, sailorish top, fur trimmed coat – IMPOSSIBLE! But then you look at him and you think, PERFECTION! More about this shot please! (and yes I agree with everyone else that he is HOT)
I'm so excited you're blogging from Seoul! Thank you! I lived there for a couple years and adored the Queen's Palace–absolutely beautiful–and go for a hike in the park behind Yonsei University. I don't remember the name, but stunning views of the city on a clear day. All of this is in Gangbuk (North of the River) where the "old" city of Seoul resided. You're going to have a blast photographing the modern fashion sensibilities of Koreans in a historic setting.
I'm so glad that you had a chance to visit Korea. There are so many fashionable people who know how to dress themselves, but they're somewhat hidden and usually hang out in exclusive little cliques. Hope you enjoyed everything our vibrant city has to offer!
Love this story. Wonder where he is going? It's like evey part of him has a different history. What kind of notebook would he use, what kind of pen or lighter?
I have to chuckle at some commenters that are wondering where to get the shoes. On my computer they looks like dollar-store slippers. Ditto the socks. I don't really care for this half-done, half-pajama look.
great picture. has the serenity of the east mixed with mafioso style. he looks as if he walked straight from the set of the Wong Kar Wai movie 'in the mood for love'
Love everything except the trousers and shoes. The top is really cool, with the scarf and the hat, the coat, all awesome. But somehow to me, i don't exactly know how to put it, the pants and shoes make him look thin and uncomfortable. Too smooth or something , i don't know, it just doesn't work for me.
A little too thought out and affected for my taste. It might be different if he hadn't struck such a posey stance. An outfit like this needs the balance of wit and humility as accompaniment.
What totally makes this already fabulous look is reading in the comments that he is actually a bad ass that got into a fight in a club! Dude walks the walk–and in my Stubbs & Wootton slippers no less…
He is definitely an attractive man, but these clothes combined make him dressed as a rich peasant first time in the city, I do not understand this look at all.
I am loving this! how bizarrely precise he is able to recreate a cartoon gangster look a la Corto Maltese. This style must have a name? cute guy. love the socks and the slippers and the sweatpants. and the hat, the scarf, the fur trim, the striped sweater & the sigarette. bravissimo! M
You have impacted my days in a big way and – I'm quite sure – the days of many others. Please be aware of your power. This is a perfect example of what happens when photographers simply "react". The continuous artistic portrayal of fashionable smokers in your photos has the ability to make a profoundly negative impact. No need to be a martyr for the cause, just less pics with cigs :)
Top half great, bottom half nooooooooooo. Sweat pants, old socks and slippers? Please tell me he sneaked out for a cigarette and perhaps we can live with it….
To everyone saying this man–or any man these days–looks like a pimp: you are wrong!
Most real pimps haven't worn wide-brim hats, long coats, or extravagant flourishes like Hermes scarves since the late 1970s. The ones you see doing it in the media and at events like Players' Balls are mostly doing it for show. Kind of like drag balls. Even Snoop Dog will say he's dressing up as Superfly.
Real pimps wear track suits, jeans and sneakers, maybe even a designer suit here and there. Basically, they look like regular guys wearing regular clothes.
Pimping is illegal, and the best way to do that crime is to be as inconspicuous as possible.
I first saw the top of the picture and i was falling in love… and i discovered the socks and shoes… i'm definitely not fashion because i can't understand why someone wants to break a wonderful line with these finish… Anyway thank you for the first impression! Audrey
i have lived in tokyo for 9 years, in and around the fashion industry. i think with this one photograph, you have managed to capture exactly why those of us fashion-enchanted (and i don't mean just harajuku street) dream, love and stay in asia.
He looks so cool. It hard to believe that people who live there have such taste of wearing clothes in artistic way and such sense of fashion. I like also the background.
He belongs in a movie.. his entire outfit is nothing short of perfection, but the detail that says it all is the way he keeps his hand in his pocket (paired with the raised eyebrow). Those tiny details make it a very expressive photo.
my gosh.. all three people u took photos are famous models in Korea. How could u crush with them once u visited the places. I could meet no one though i have been those places hundreds of times! Anyway u got nice people!
I live in Seoul and I have seldom chance to meet awesome man like him in the sreet. this is just unbelivable. NOT ordinary men in Seoul are as stylish as him.. I can tell you that.
he is a famous model in Korea in the first photo (woman with red belt) she is a model ,too (not that much famous, but I remember that she was a first Korean Playboy magazine model Lee Yeon Jung ) You took two Korea models in the street accidentally!!! What a coincidence!!!!!

This look is modern-day p.i.m.p. mixed with a korean gangster fashion circa 1930s during the japanese occupation. Would've preferred wingtips instead of the leopard print. I guess it goes with the pimp motif.

Be sure to check out Leeum Art Museum and Seoul N Tower if you have free time. It's a nice escape and you can see the Seoul skyline from above.

January 9, 2011 at 11:59 am
1. Abgujung(chungdam-dong); in seoul
nice area, fancy-ish, good cafes and restaurants, many fashion-related people hang out there.
Cafes, etc that I recommend: Paper Garden, Zen, Mui-Mui, Queen
You can just walk around the area and find many nice things- best time would be a weekend afternoon/ nighttime.
2. Hongdae(Hongik university); in seoul
- that area is kinda symbol of young people's fashion and clubs.
so many youngs(20`s) are spending their night time in that area and your friend could find out unique fashioned people easily.
-recommended time?kk: friday night… you know… clubs..
3. insadong; in seoul
- as you know Insadong is very traditional area. Not as much fashion, but a great place to visit. Beautiful tea shops and places for rice-cakes and tea, old traditional buildings, traditional restaurants where you sit on hardwood floors and eat great food.
GREAT tea/rice-cake house:
4. Jungjadong; in Bundang
- JungJadong is usually called "imitation of abgujung cafe road). cuz it is built by urban planing few years ago but so famous in korea now.

Not my style…but nice neverthless!

Dear Sartorialist,
You have impacted my days in a big way and – I'm quite sure – the days of many others. Please be aware of your power. This is a perfect example of what happens when photographers simply "react". The continuous artistic portrayal of fashionable smokers in your photos has the ability to make a profoundly negative impact. No need to be a martyr for the cause, just less pics with cigs :)
Also, thanks for promoting socks and shoes ;)

Most real pimps haven't worn wide-brim hats, long coats, or extravagant flourishes like Hermes scarves since the late 1970s. The ones you see doing it in the media and at events like Players' Balls are mostly doing it for show. Kind of like drag balls. Even Snoop Dog will say he's dressing up as Superfly.
Real pimps wear track suits, jeans and sneakers, maybe even a designer suit here and there. Basically, they look like regular guys wearing regular clothes.
Pimping is illegal, and the best way to do that crime is to be as inconspicuous as possible.

i have lived in tokyo for 9 years, in and around the fashion industry. i think with this one photograph, you have managed to capture exactly why those of us fashion-enchanted (and i don't mean just harajuku street) dream, love and stay in asia.
this is beautiful. thank you.

He belongs in a movie.. his entire outfit is nothing short of perfection, but the detail that says it all is the way he keeps his hand in his pocket (paired with the raised eyebrow). Those tiny details make it a very expressive photo.

This look is modern-day p.i.m.p. mixed with a korean gangster fashion circa 1930s during the japanese occupation. Would've preferred wingtips instead of the leopard print. I guess it goes with the pimp motif.
