On The Street……..Shawl? Soho, NYC

It is not really a poncho or a prayer shawl but it is pretty cool how she brings color and pattern into her monotone look by wearing this over her coat.

her name is susan cianciolo – designer and artist

google the history of her collections from the early 90′s and on. seriously one of the most original designers to have come out of nyc or america in a very long time. sadly she doesn’t design so much anymore. a retrospective book on her work was published in japan a few years back.

i think she is wearing a huipil, a native mexican embroidered blouse, often lined at the neck and arms with contrasting velvet. it seems she undid the seams.

The pattern and colors of her shawl with the frayed hem are really excellent!

I also love the worn, dark look of her boots.

    could be a huipil…

also, in her earlier collections she had “tabard” like pieces so it could also be fabric fashioned into a modern tabard

susan cianciolo …. i first saw her and her work in NYLON in about 2000. she said that she doesnt do any shopping and makes her own clothes. i was only 17 then and it was inspiring moment for me ….

Ms. Cianciolo has great style. I do believe she is wearing a Mexican huipil (I am a huge fan and have a collection of them). She has inspired me to wear them as daily wear — so chic!

PS: How about a follow-up post? What is she wearing now?
