Is it weird that I like whatever it is that she is holding?
Even though I dont’ know what it is, the color really works…
It’s like she knows what she’s doing :)
I have a feeling everyone there will be “oohs” and “aahs” over how brilliant this outfit is …. and I won’t get it. I mean, I know oversized coats are on trend right now. But it’s swallowing her whole! I like the boho hat but combined with the oversized coat and “un-stylish to be stylish” shoes with the “anti-stylish” turtleneck all makes for a sloppy look.
Am I in the minority? Or perhaps anyone who agrees won’t say anything?
I agree. Sometimes I consider that people just comment to say something like: “I like it!”, no matter what it is, just to make a comment. And like you, I wonder sometimes if it’s really like this, if they really like everything, and what would be so bad in taking a couple of minutes more and telling the truth or a bit more detailed opinion.
Thanks for putting into written words.
Most people aren’t leaving the comments to make you understand. They are probably leaving the comments to express their feelings. I think many of us simply don’t leave comments when we don’t like something because it is quite rude.
What does it matter if you are in the minority? Are you that insecure? If you son’t like it, thats fine. Doesn’t mean everyone else is lying. I love it.
In my opinion, when a comment is made from the respect, can perfectly express like or dislike. Disliking somethig doesn’t really need to be rude.
The point is, I somehow think many people don’t express their feelings, some people may leave a short comment just to be able to add their link to their website, because it’s the same comment they leave in all the blogs and sometimes it has nothing to do with what is published.
So, it is ok to like it or not, to make others understand or not. What I consider rude is to write: “I like it”, just to leave the link (0r 3 links) under it.
Going back to the real topic: the girl is really nice, and although I don’t share the opinion that I like it, I consider very very brave to dress the way you are and feel even knowing that some people may critizice.
Signed: the person who is looking forward to be brave to wear some kind of pieces.
Walking on the street naked also requires bravery, but that does not show style or good taste. In this case wearing ugly clothes and not worrying what others have to say has nothing to do with bravery, just bad taste.
Nodbon {Ana},
I appreciate the intelligence of your comments. Thank you. Be brave! Wear those pieces! Life is short.

I’m right there with you – I feel like I’m missing something here. I can live with the oversize coat, but combined with the shoes and polo neck; really sort of baffled.
I totally agree with you. I understand the oversized trend on outerwear, but some balance is what makes an outfit aesthetically pleasing. It feels to me like this girl is trying too hard just to be “different” with no regard to what is actually visually appealing.
LizPR-count me in as agreeing w/your opinion. I’m also sure we will be in the minority. I don’t care for anything she is wearing, it all looks like it belongs to her old large grandfather or something.
Oh my goodness …. wow! Thanks everyone – not for agreeing per se, but for just putting it out there; letting me know you do.
I sometimes feel like the “non-liker” of The Sartorialist because I tend to question as much as I like certain outfits.
I also think Scott is deliberate in putting up photos that would spark dialogue – and I even go so far as wonder if he puts up the odd pic now and then of an outfit that he himself may think is terrible (if not merely unusual or controversial) just to see if everyone “baas” like sheep with a resounding “fabulous”.
Anyway, I appreciate everyone who let me know I’m not alone in my thoughts.

Thanks to all who have spoken up not liking this. It’s simply awful. The coat isn’t “oversize” it doesn’t fit. The hat’s a joke. Is it on top of another hat, or her hair? And then, men’s slippers! You’ve got to be kidding! Perhaps Scott will be compelled to clue us in to what he saw here… Scott? PLEASE!

M. MESVOYAGES A PARIS STYLE BLOG
Oooooh, this is very very strange. If she wasn’t a pretty girl, I would have though she hadn’t done it on purpose and that she was just an odd weirdo. But it’s obviously not the case. So what’s going on there ? I don’t know. I think the hat and the coat would work on a taller lady, but really, I can’t like the old slippers and I’m not a big fan of the jumper. Oh, I just though of one thing: it might be a costume for a fancy dress party. This would explain it all. And now, why would we need to explain, it’s just great than we can come across such characters in Paris! http://www.gare-a-gary.blogspot.com
“If she wasn’t a pretty girl, I would have though she hadn’t done it on purpose and that she was just an odd weirdo.” ………I read these selection of comments out of curiosity as result of the repost, and I was stunned to come across this phrase. I would never expect such a vain justification of “off-beat” style. In what way does vanity attest to the sanity, or fashion sense of a person? And why is this girl alleged to be dressed this way ‘on purpose’? as if she needs to be aesthetically pleasing in order to mockingly dawn the garb she is wearing? ..Everyone is entitled to their opinion, don’t get me wrong, but as an avid reader of The Sartorialist and an 18 year old young woman coming into the world.. this comment has left be baffled. Style is style. No amount of physically beauty will be an excuse, and in this case.. what excuse does this beautifully dressed girl need?
Truly hideous…because it lacks common sense. The coat is the wrong proportion for her body…the hat is cool..the rest is utter disaster color wise. Those velvet slippers will haunt me for quite some time. Thank God her make up is flawless and her skin looks like she bathes in Creme De La Mer otherwise I would have concluded that she lives on a bench, talks to pigeons all day and drinks cheap wine straight out of the bottle. { FASHION VICTIM AT ITS WORST.}
She makes me wonder who or what she is. Her face looks too smart and clean for a homeless person, but her oversized coat and shoes are nearly screaming ‘ Get me to the nearest goodwill and have me replaced!” Why?! Why would anyone do this to themselves?
Wow! She looks like a bag lady, hobo from the thirties to me. I think she’s even wearing slippers. Yes, it’s unique and original but that doesn’t always equate to good fashion. I do like her little hat but besides that, there is nothing chic about this ensemble.
Maybe she really is a bag lady? Homeless? Maybe she can’t go home and change? This is one of the loveliest pictures to be seen on this blog I think. She might be an art student or a really wealthy but eccentric lady playing around with looks, or maybe she does not care at all? But she might be a real life home less bag lady who can’t go home and change.
She is making a statement- accept me or don’t accept me for the way I look. I will bet if Scott were to photograph her in 1 year- we might see something different or not. Keep a watchful eye.
She looks adorable. Definitely unusual and not what you could expect in a typical fashion blog, but that makes it all the better. Its like a real life distillation of the big hat, oversized coat look. Like a cute, urban mushroom.
So many people have talked about how they don’t like this girl’s outfit, it’s poor color choice or proportions, or a despise of pajama as daywear, or even ethnic this or that… Has anyone stopped to realize that there is more clothing and history than what is Euro-centric? That maybe pajama’s originally are daywear and not sleepwear? Or that this girl’s inspirations may come from a culture that takes care to reducing the body, interest in the sensuality in movement rather than sensuality of suggestion? Or how troubling that to wear the likes of a sleeved coat and trousers is to wear normal clothes; but to wear anything else is to be costumed, to be ethnic?
Why not enjoy how someone has dressed for the world and for themself and wonder why they do what they do even if you wouldn’t yourself, rather than sour your face and just say “no”?
Just horrible. It is the perfect example of not to wear that way. Not vintage, not cute, not fashion. This marvellous girl would look better with other clothes.
Sometimes seems that wear a sort of different things I can find in fleas markets or wherever is fashion and trendy. No way! Lets recover a good taste.
“Proportions and fashion be damned, I’m rocking the real hobo look” – Her
I support and love her passive defiance. I don’t care what anyone says, this is true fashion and what I miss about the old approach to this blog. Real people wearing whatever the hell they want confidently. Bucking fashion trends and rules. True muses.
A very delightful contrast between a beautiful face and (overly) relaxed way of dressing. I found it very entertaining, and yes she would make me smile when i passed her on the street.
Okay, one more bat at my “comments” ball. I should not have been so harsh before. If you took the picture Scott; then you found beauty, balance, something unique, and the like. This young woman is walking the tightrope, fashion wise, and I completely respect her for this. One of the things I’d like to see the most is her in the morning going about selecting what she is going to wear, I’d love to see her closet. In NYC, you can get anything and I’m sure it’s like that most anywhere you go. She urges me to buy a hat! Here she is in Paris rocking their boats!
you know what? sometimes I see people on the street and I think this is a really cool outfit, this is a great style! it can be something modern, something minimal, something retro or something really weird. and sometimes I see a person from behind and I suddenly think yeah! that’s what I was searching for! and when I see the persons’ face most of the time she is a really old lady who wears her coat or skirt or headband for 25 years and the item becomes a part of herself with years with all the ill usage and all the memories. A knee lenght skirt under a really cosy coat, washed out colours, clashing prints; sometimes they become a wtf moment for lots of people but I think someone, somewhere can like it. without trying to over-buy, over- spend people can be stylish! and I think this girl has a secret vision or an agenda to become a part of a story only she seems to know. I can’t say she is fashion week front row queen/ super buyer/ wannabe fashion blogger/ money can buy everything/ worthy chic but nonetheless she is herself and she is enjoying what is that she is wearing. And thank you Scott for putting someone wearing something that won’t cost a house or a car.
It’s not about fashion. It’s about the clothes people wear, how they wear it, why they wear it… It tells a story… Clothes reflect someones soul, thoughts, feelings etc. There’s a reason this girl wore this outfit that day. It wasn’t to be photographed, that’s for sure. To me, I believe that’s what this website is about. Something more than fashion and trends… Not about fashion, it’s about style and the story behind these fabulous strangers. This is more beautiful.

Not so sure about the outfit – I hate it but then love something about it at the same time. But the photo is amazing – really good.

Is that the hat Jane March wore in The Lover? I’ve been looking all over for it. It admittedly appears a little battered now…

There are so many wrong things about this….
fashion is serious business… sometimes people are just playing us a joke.

Not sure if I like this look, a bit raggedy Ann!! She is certainly making a statement.

I feel like I took mushrooms seeing her – or maybe SHE took them and that’s why she dressed like that.
