For some reason I love this photo… You probably see it a million times a day, well dress women, sitting on a bench, checking her phone… She has great style, from her sunglasses to skirt and shoes!
A beautifully simple silhouette, I’m liking this return to minimalism that we’re seeing in the streets these days, makes me excited about autumn and how I can make monochromatic outfits look interesting.
I love the composition of this photo! Two stories going on here ….
The guy on the left holding his lady’s handbag … (at least I HOPE it’s his lady’s….)
Then, in a separate story on the right, the woman on the bench. I love her delicate outfit, the classic black and white, and the unguarded nature of this shot.
PS: I didn’t even notice the yin-yang of black and white between the man in the background and the woman in the foreground. The more I look at this photo, the more I discover things to like about it.
You are so detailed in your observation. My attention went directly to SHOES. However, after I read your post, I took a second and third look. You are spot on in your description !
I’m starting to suspect that you are secretly working for a mobile phone company’s research project into the behaviour of users and that the blog is a happy by-product of your real work, ha, ha!
everything is perfect in that moment, i completely agree with you because this image belongs to real life, an stilish real life but nonetheless real, not like a lot of current photos that seem taken from a cover of a magazine. I love how you’ve captured the magnificent instant Scott (I love that of your photos, it’s what makes you different) where everithings seems to fit, letting us see a perfect example of parisian lifestyle.
Love, love, love it!!! I can’t wait to get back to Paris. Classic beauty and elegance, all in one. And then, there is the subtle hint of pure romance, displayed in such an understated way. Simply wonderful photo.
If she were as smart as she looks she would be checking out the guy in the background instead of her phone….really. The phone is getting to be the absolute most trite accessory. Like taking a thorn out of your foot..she focuses on that thing like there is nothing else going on in the world. Pity.
The legs on the bench are both a charming and amusing contrast to hers. Photos like this always remind me of the terrifying–but probably true–declaration that you’re only as young as your knees.
Legs, smegs!:) it’s the guy in the background that has my attention. So confident holding that pocket book:) Put fore and background together and its more than the obvious story of a beautiful woman, it’s a story of our time and how far we’ve come wherein both sexes are comfortable switching roles publicly…at least that’s how I see it.
Love this photo. The black and white she is wearing is classic chic- juxtaposed against the incredible bench that she is siting on. This looks like a movie scene.-your not sure if the guy is with her or waiting on someone. They are wearing similar colors and have similar bags.. love it!
This photo is one of the best on my list (along with the one taken through a cafe window). It’s a flash into the lives of the people in this picture, like a painting, and you can interpret it the way you want.
Beside the impeccable style of the woman on the foreground, I love the atmosphere which makes me miss my city so much !
I am in love with this shot. The outfit, for starters, is feminine, elegant and effortlessly chic. The woman is beautiful. And the photo has so much movement. Add the Paris street and voila! A simply gorgeous shot. Bravo!
Fantastic! The colors and composition of this picture is great! I love her placement, and the way her hair is done, and how she is so engaged on her phone and yet distractedly touching her sandal. Very compelling image.
Lovely. The black and white of her elegant outfit echoed in both the gentleman’s clothing and the building is beautiful. Not to mention those legs! And there she sits, seemingly unaware of her surroundings …
Isn´t she Victoire Chopinaud?
I´ve been following her at this blog, love her style!
Happy to find out that even though I´m not as pretty as her I do have similar legs!
Regarding this particular photo I love the whole b&w feeling, interrupted by the green.
Regards from the freezing Buenos Aires!
on first blush i think wow, a little bit of leg never hurt nobody. then, I look longer at the whole picture and I like it less. Mostly because the main focus begins to feel contrived. a long skirt doesn’t just happen to come up to the thigh while sitting this way. it makes the whole thing feel too posed but it’s the first blush that counts i guess.
This may be one of my favorite photos that you’ve ever taken. It’s close to perfect. There are so many stories that can be told with this picture. It’s superb.
A fine study in threes; Girls’ black top and the two black pots behind her; the cluster of three figures in middle and background; her two legs and the vertical extension of her arm; the three visible legs of the bench; white wall to white skirt to white shirt and so on. Really lovely composition!
I love everything about the woman– from how the skirt delicately drapes over the bench, her messy but pretty hair, each of her hands busy minding their own business, and how inent she looks on reading whatever is on her phone. Wonderful moment captured, as always :)
What a chic photo ! I just wanted to say my professor at FIT talked about your blog and the amazing quality of your photos, he even compared you to Bill Cuningham, what an honor right ? ;)
This photo is sooooooo Paris!
I saw it and in a second I knew it would have been shot there.
Her profile reminds me of Nicole Kidman.
Love how she’s sitting so casually yet sensually.
One of those photos I would include in a style book. Great attitude, great look, great photo composition. Black and white beautifully blend in everywhere in this photograph and she looks so natural. Street style inspired me more than any style icon, I’m most of all inspired by women who look elegant and comfortable in what they wear and your photos always capture that feeling.
Beautiful! Her outfit and her hair are effortlessly elegant. I love how first you focus on her and then you gradually notice the man in the background and how perfectly opposite his outfit is from hers.
Its so chic i agrre with the world “simplicity is beaty” and i see as much simplycity as beaty too her make up is amazing and so elegand ,i love her shoes and her hairstyle !
Those heels look REALLY uncomfortable,
but her style is amazing, effortless, elegant, well, Parisian ! (I hope she’s a parisian, if not I will look stupid)
There is a lovely tension in this shot, with the man in the white shirt and the other people attending to the store window, and the woman with her back to them, focused on her phone message. I also love the graceful curve formed by her arms, and the way the hair falling loose punctuates the entire story.
Isn’t this the same breathtaking woman you photographed in that sheer skirt on the Rue Rivoli last Wednesday? I’m equally transfixed by both, and tbought I recognized the profile!
You are living the dream, travel so much and take such beautiful pictures. When will you visit London next? I just discovered your blog and love it. Would love to see some new London photos.
I like the foreground background aspect of this photo. Very often your photo’s just focus in on the subject, but this is more of a scene. I also like that it feels like the people have been stopped in time, as if they’re frozen. There’s sort of a soft blur in the background that suggests movement, and then the woman looks like she’s in the middle of moving as well. The white, black, and green is a great colour palette.
This is such a beautiful picture with some many subtle lines running through it. The counter opposite colour coded clothes; the sitting lady taking her time and the man waiting for her looking – longingly – for the already re-united couple. Again, the sitting lady obliviously indulging in the time to concentrate on her mobile and again the waiting man…you can almost feel how twitchy he is… Oh, Mr Sartorialist, how do you do it? thank you :)
Have you studied the the oeuvre of the great Atget? I know you are such a huge fan of August Sander (and a worthy succesor) but I think you should look for work by the Parisian master too…you truly have surpassed the vision of these pygmies! Keep on taking the world of photography by storm…you are so far in front of the pack I can only make an Olympic comparison in this time of the Olympics…you are the gold medalist in my world!!!

on first blush i think wow, a little bit of leg never hurt nobody. then, I look longer at the whole picture and I like it less. Mostly because the main focus begins to feel contrived. a long skirt doesn’t just happen to come up to the thigh while sitting this way. it makes the whole thing feel too posed but it’s the first blush that counts i guess.

A fine study in threes; Girls’ black top and the two black pots behind her; the cluster of three figures in middle and background; her two legs and the vertical extension of her arm; the three visible legs of the bench; white wall to white skirt to white shirt and so on. Really lovely composition!

There is a lovely tension in this shot, with the man in the white shirt and the other people attending to the store window, and the woman with her back to them, focused on her phone message. I also love the graceful curve formed by her arms, and the way the hair falling loose punctuates the entire story.
Just lovely.
