this choice of subject is refreshingly surprising; a treat. she has a sort of ingenue look about her, almost accidentally; her look is effortless and simple summer fun. the saturation of colors is also ideal.

Growing up, a girl’s bike was not cool at all, even for a girl. But now I think trying to ride a boy’s bike in a dress just wouldn’t be practical or as effortless as the girl in this photo.

“The phone stays in the picture”…for myriad reasons: it’s a candid shot; she might be browsing The Sartorialist; she may be checking an email…who knows? It’s her business, but without that phone–why would she interrupt her bike ride? The phone plus Scott’s talent made this beautiful photograph possible. Of course, this composition may have been staged…it’s still a reflection of everyday life, capturing not just an image–a bit of the zeitgeist.

There is a sense of whimsy in this gorgeous large-format shot, yet the cell phone does deflate this whimsical sensibility to an extent. However, the cell phone also adds a much valued sense of realism, too and thankfully, I can live with the paradox.

This is such a lovely picture catching the easy going nature of cycling. That is because the bicycle geometry allows comfortable cycling with gearing holding the effort below the sweat threshold. These bikes are the forgotten heroes of form and function, three times the speed of walking with only one fifth the effort of walking. Sounds almost to good tobe true.

This reminds me of another more innocent time: Sixteen-years-old, leafing through Glamour Magazine, dreaming over pictures of an ideal life with ideal summer dresses, and ideal summer sandals. Summer lasted for eons then.

Perfect! The picnic basket on the front and the blanket on the back made the whole scene so summery. I am seeing a lot of retro bikes recently. I bought one for my daughter with a basket on the front. Everyone wants to use her basket and she has other bikes with baskets parking next to hers….so cute. The girl…Italian, beautiful of course and perfectly dressed for the day.

Beautiful shot, and I yearn for a basket like that… but am I really the only one thinking that she would look smarter if she was wearing a helmet? I mean, I know it messes with that perfectly messy bun and all, but not as much as those cobblestones would… Helmets may not be romantic, but neither are brain injuries! For those interested in the bike it looks to be a Gazelle Toer Populair with a Steco front rack and Basil wicker basket. Not a retro bike, but a bike still in production whose design has hardly changed in 100 years. Upright bikes are making a big comeback outside of their usual heartland of continental Europe, becoming more popular in the UK and US as people rediscover the style, comfort and practicality of upright bicycles compared to road and mountain bikes.
