On the Street……Oxford St., Sydney

UPDATE: Of the 100 comments so far, for this image, only two mentioned what I thought was most important element – the strong eyebrows of the girl on the right.

That is a real stylistic choice, as much as choosing a great pair of shoes or a bag.

So what about a strong brow? Can it be a trend or is it totally dependent on the person?

  101. Belgiquechique

    April 29, 2010 at 10:13 am

A strong brow can definitely be a stylistic choice, if you have strong eyebrows and don't want to pluck them… but it also largely depends on your genes. If you're fair-haired and have fine hair, it's unlikely you'll have brows like this girl on the right. And moreover, strong eyebrows wouldn't work that well on the girl on the left, in my opinion, it's just a totally different type of person.

But it definitely beats the thin to non-existent eyebrows that have been in fashion for so long..

  102. Belgiquechique

    April 29, 2010 at 10:16 am

Oh and I remember having seen Dicaprio in a very similar pose as the girl to the right, in one of his earliest movies, maybe that's partly why she reminds us of him so much. Don't remember if it was in "what's eating gilbert grape" or sth..

  103. Jessica

    April 29, 2010 at 10:20 am

im kind of amused because this entire time i've thought the girl on the right was a sexy guy. hahahaha<3

  104. Sara Bentley

    April 29, 2010 at 10:21 am

Well… seeing as my own brows can definitely be considered as "strong" I think it's more than a trend and totally dependant on the person wearing them. You can't hide strong brows and don't even try!

  106. Marissa

    April 29, 2010 at 10:32 am

strong eyebrows depends on the person, eyebrow shaping all depends on the shape of the person's face imo. that being said, her eyebrows are really cool and this is a really cool pic.

  109. PARIS

    April 29, 2010 at 11:04 am

Strong eye brows are extremely special & specific. It absolutely depends on your face shape and the nature of your eyebrow hair growth in general. For example, they look fantastic on this lovely Australian girlie & someone like Filippa Hamilton or Brooke Shields… lucky lucky ladies!

Great shots, you really capture the superb style that is Sydney… so unlike anything else! xx P.

  110. mani

    April 29, 2010 at 11:08 am

i think a strong brow depends on the person – its best to find a shape that frames your eyes well and maintain that, rather than change it up when the trends change. The right brow is like a classic LBD, if it works on you, it'll never go out of style

  111. Breda L

    April 29, 2010 at 11:21 am

Her eyebrows frame her face beautifully, and she can really pull off their strength that's why I'd say that eyebrow's can't really be manipulated to be fashionable or not. They should transcend trend and suit the person instead..but hey maybe I'm jealous, my eyebrows just wouldn't grow that thick! :)

  112. ax_ELLE

    April 29, 2010 at 11:35 am

I think you need to be the person to have strong brows. i have strong eyebrows, but I would look ugly with thin eyebrows.

it's hard to fake thick eyebrows without looking like a clown, but yes they can be a trend. why not?
we blondes don't stand much of a chance of participating unless we go garish.

  114. Ariane

    April 29, 2010 at 12:20 pm

    hmm.. I don't know.
I sure works on the girl in this picture, but I remember some celeb's trying, didn't turn out so good-looking :
    leighton meester here : http://justjared.buzznet.com/2009/10/19/leighton-meester-somebody-to-love-music-video-preview/

or Katie Price, and evn Ali Lohan :
    http://x17online.com/celebrities/ali_lohan/who_has_the_better_brows_ali_or_katie-04272010.php

    it never looks good.

So, I don't see this becoming a trend. I just think that *sometimes*, on the right person, it looks incredible. just like bleached brows on Lara Stone.

  115. Passport Smiles

    April 29, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I think a strong brow adds so much to beauty, personally. However, I think it's a current trend. The shape of euebrows changes with times. The 80s anyone? The non-existent eyebrows in the 90s?

  117. KATE MARISA

    April 29, 2010 at 12:32 pm

my first thought was the eyebrows before i had saw your comment on them. I'm all about the big strong eyebrows, so much in fact i have cut my fringe so that i look like Spock so that they can be shown off for the first time in a year! i'd love to see big brows on everyone, overplucked ones knock me sick, but i don't think everyone can pull it off, just like every 'trend' really. she can though. i like to think i can- but then again mine have never been small (former mono-brow!) and i love that neither of them seem to be wearing a lot, if any make-up. funny, the girls i see round uni with the caked on make up and the orange foundation have the horrible over plucked eyebrows. best to be as natural as you can be.

  118. Anonymous

    April 29, 2010 at 12:35 pm

i believe that strong eyebrows are a trend these days, as they had been when brooke shields was a teenager. However, not everyone can have such strong eyebrows. The trend is actually having a natural look, in contrast to the extra thin eyebrows was some time ago.

  119. erika

    April 29, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Unfortunately not everyone is able to have strong eyebrows like hers, unless they're penciled on — which is another statement altogether… That said, I love hers.. she's very lucky.

I think it's definitely dependent on the person…there are certainly people who have maintained thick eyebrows their whole lives (Charlotte Casiraghi, Brooke Shields, etc.) and I feel like it is, as you said, an individual expression of their style.

I think the shape of a brow is a style choice. Brows have been thin, thick, and all kinds of things in between, but I go for a pretty classic arch and not thin at all myself. That's how I like to frame my eyes.

My sister has a very strong brow–and with her high cheekbones and big eyes, we always tell her she looks like Audrey Hepburn.

I think more women should consider not thinning down their eyebrows–not that it would look good on everyone, but it's so striking on the women who dare.

When I think of strong brows I think of only one person, Elizabeth Taylor. Has there ever been anyone in the public's eye that could pull them off like she did in her younger days? Maybe Suzy Parker? But I think hers were enhanced ala 50's. How incredible Liz looked and how incredible this young one looks. Its not just the strong brow its the actual shape! Did she come this way? Did she pay someone to meticulously do the job? She is so natural, I somehow picture her walking out of the house this way. Love the photograph all the way around. Back to the brows for a moment. There are strong brows and then there are these kind of brows, uniques and sexy! One more, Sophia Loren:)

Strong brows are wonderful, and the shape of the brow is definitely a style choice. I personally love the bold look, but I can't have mine like that, simply because, well, I don't have quite enough brow :P

Re the brow: Go for it.

Anyone can do it–whether natural or drawn in–and anyone should do it, at least once.

Life is too short not to risk something that may not suit you.

I never realized that there was a trend to eyebrows. Mainly because I've always had to pencil mine in because I have very sparse brows and when shaped, it looks like i have none. I need to always draw them in to make my eyes appear more defined and it is a major pain. I would say that I'd lean towards having a a strong brow. It's natural, beautiful when shaped and at least it gives you the option to thin them out if desired.

The strong eye brows already is a trend. Fall09 runways showed a lot of that kind of maku-up. IN sweden it's quite trendy right now :) But still, its not suited for every one, I think.

i think its totally dependant on the person's face structure…

actually im positive… i once had a girl friend who went from thin [proportionately thin] brows to ultra thick brows like the girl on the right…and looked sooo creapy with the new ones.. it totally depends on ur face

Both girls are stunning but as far as the girl on the right is concerned, you see the eyebrows more than you see the girl. I think that's a bit of a shame. Her brows seem to masculine for the rest of her face because it's so fine.

I love strong eyebrows, and mine I quite strong. I don't think it can be a trend because many people have rather thin eyebrows. But one thing for sure I always get so upset if someone I now who had strong eyebrows thins them out and often make such a silly shape that I want to cry! I think it is a gift – to have strong eyebrows and it is impossible to grow them back. So girls, please, please, please think twice or… three or four times before thining them out.

The picture is amazing. I don't think there something wrong with the hands… The mood of the pic is fantastic!

the brows were the first thing i loved/noticed about her….. absolutely stunning.

and i think they can be trendy or classic. it's classic if it's your signature as a woman, whereas i'd say it's trendy if you had the strong-brow look for a time but don't generally keep them that way.

I think those strong brows not only suit her, but strike me as incredibly soft and natural. I know they are strong, but I can't over emphasize how much softer her whole personality seems because of them. I've seen too many beautiful women with overly thin, equally strong eyebrows. Penciled in. It is such a hard look.

As a fifteen year old girl with thick, dark eyebrows, it has been very hard for me, at an age when peer pressure (as over used as that word is, it felt needed in the context) is such a strong factor in everyday life, to keep my bold eyebrows. In the past I have over plucked them (disastrously, I might add) and it wasn't until recently that I have realized that they help shape my face, add character, & have become almost my trademark. In an age when most girls my age have barely there brows its nice to have thick browed role models such as actress Camilla Belle & model Ali Michael. Style (not just fashion) is very important to me & my eyebrows, no matter what anyone says, will always be adding character to my face.

I love how the girl on the right looks so carefree and her limbs are bare so even as we're drawn to her pixie face (i completely agree that she looks like young leo di caprio) there's a tangle of flesh colored knots underneath.
    Nice.
Her brows make her look more devlish and it adds to her rougher style. Otherwise, with delicate brows, she'd look like a thin-boned fairy!

It's a shame that the blond girl on the left is not given more attention. She fades bit, no?

Brows are incredibly important – they frame the face and, I think, look fresh no matter what your age. I'm all for my daughter (14) experimenting etc but I've drummed into her that once her brows are touched, that's it! She has real Brooke Shield eyebrows, they're gorgeous and they're staying that way!

I wish I had the option of thicker brows. I did have thicker brows as a kid but i plucked them so zealously as a teen that they stopped growing back. I'm just lucky I didn't ruin them entirely, at least they are still a nice and natural shape, even if they are narrow! Let that be a lesson to any teen readers – are you really so sure you want paper thin brows? They might go out of style and by then you might be stuck with them. You're much better off just tidying up the scraggly hairs underneath and keeping your natural fullness and shape.

Natalia Vodianova sold me on the strong brow the first time I saw her, so I've been about it for years. Unfortunately, I could never do it myself. My eyebrows are limited in scope, and light enough that they almost disappear in the summer. Perhaps that's why I appreciate strong, dark, eyebrows so much on other women.

The fashionistas would have us believe a strong brow is a trend, but like anything else, it should be completely dictated by the person – their bone structure, their tastes, and the image they wish to present.

well, big brows is beautiful for some girls, obviously! But I think it does make the girl look a little tom-boy'ish. So I don't think that this is able to become a real trend, because only a minority is able to wear it properly. But if one is able to make it look good, this is defiantly a great detail!

Eyebrows definitely look best kept in or close to their natural shape. I never understood the trend a few years back of the thin brows that all looked the same–usually with the thinned, poker-straight hair, too. It was a dull look, and creepy in the uniformity. What looks best on each person is not necessarily what looks best on others.

i think its a trend as much as it will maybe feature more in editorial/campaigns where exagerrated eyebrows work
buin an everyday context physically changing your brows is very difficult
i have naturally dark and thick brows for my hair and i plucked them to oblivion, but when i was 15 i realised it was doing me no favours so grew the back (which was incredibly traumatic! i cant see any older women doing it) and i was lucky to grow them back at all

I've been asking myself the same question ever since the strong brow look caught on a few years ago. I immediately loved it and grew my brows out. However, having strong, rough face structure, they unfortunately made me look like a crazy man and like my brother said "just because it's in style it doesn't mean that it suits everybody". So… I trimmed them down a bit.

After my own failed strong brow incident and after observing the girls that get away with them the best (Natalia Vodianova making a great example) I realized that a strong brow in general suits a person with very soft, feminine, girl-like features and is definately a trend that should not be picked up by everybody.

Every person recognizes how a nice coif can enhance a woman's appearance. I've always found it puzzling how few women seem to realize the dramatic effect a full and shapely brow can also have. It seems to me to be the easiest and most effective way for a woman to make herself achieve natural beauty.

I noticed the strong eyebrows, too, and I really like them. So many girls keep their eyebrows so thin, and I think it's so much prettier when they aren't so little. They look more confident, kind of.

As for your trend question, I think most anyone could look good with strong eyebrows if they take care of them, but I think that it will never become one, just because so many girls over-pluck their brows. Really, a lot of girls are too insecure about thick eyebrows to let them grow out a little bit.

amazing – the strong brow is the first thing i noticed in the photo. i'm a firm believer – the aesthetician i see has a 'Brooke Shields' brow, so i know i'll never end up with brows that are too thin

i have naturally strong eyebrows but started plucking my eyebrows really thin when i was in my early teens. However, this is the one thing I regret the most as I am now trying to grow them all out. It has been two years that I now go to an eyebrow specialist and she said it can possibly take up to 4 years (for anyone)to grow them all out completely.

I finally have the shape of my eyebrow suited for my face but now i'm just waiting for my eyebrows to fill in the gap. Hopefully in a year i can finally have my original eyebrows i was born with.

having the perfect eyebrows can make a whole difference to a person's face.

I have thick eyebrows and I do pluck them, not paper thin, but enough to make them look … clean. And since I have a pixie cut and a not-so-feminine face, I have to make my eyebrows not so strong.

Many of us operate on the principle that if you cannot say anything nice, say nothing at all.
I happened to have found the girl on the left much more attractive.
Having read your comment, I analyzed the picture and my feelings about it to find out why.
I like the girl on the left better because she has beautiful skin and not big thick, dark eyebrows, which seem mannish to me (which some men prefer–to each his own).
But then again, I am not gay.
    De gustibus non disputandum est.
Had the blogger said nothing, I would have kept this to myself.

the eyebrows were the first thing I noticed! that may be because I have a slight obsession with thick eyebrows – I love them. It should be a trend…my tip is to get a brown mascara, wipe almost all the product off the brush and then use it to make your eyebrows look thicker and darker. Less obvious than pencil, but only for non rainy days

It's so funny how many people post that they dislike thin eyebrows, because clearly that implies that thick eyebrows are trendy. In ten years, it will probably be the opposite.

I have naturally very thin half-eyebrows which I pencil in at the end or else I look strange! If I had thick dark ones I would look awful, no matter how trendy they may be.

I have definitely been told "Ew why do you pluck your eyebrows out and pencil them in?!" by a few people – but I can't help it!
So PLEASE be sensitive the next time you see someone with thin eyebrows. It may be natural and your opinion doesn't dictate everyone's taste.

No, strong brows must be dependant on the person. I have red hair and blonde eyebrows. So a strong, dark brow is not in the books for me…as much as I admire and would love to have it. Mostly only brunettes get to luck into them.

I'm from a very small town and my mother used to always say: Take good care of your teeth. Don't get pregnant, don't smoke and DON'T you dare plug your eyebrows. Because eyebrows frame the face those girls who pluck to much and have thin eyebrows, that wondered half-way up their forehead look like cows.

So being my mother's daughter, I instantly thought that girl had a beautifully framed face.

Difficult question about the eyebrows… I firmly believe one should do what is right given their body shape, colour etc. rather than follow fashion blindly. It works on her, it may be fairly natural (she has dark hair but lighter skin). It would not work on the girl on the left hand side of the picture since she has a very fair hair and complexion: it would look out of place.

It's completely dependent on the person. Someone needs to either have features large enough to balance large brows, usually. Also, thinner faces accommodate large brows better than larger faces. Basically, if the girl can get away with it and still look feminine and petit, they can(/should?).

as a gal with "strong eyebrows" i am told constantly by my thread-er that i am lucky to have so much brow to work with… i think it is a personal choice, and for some they make the choice to simply manicure what they have. others want to be simple and want their brows to be like everyone else or else do nothing about them. either way, i am constantly changing my brows to go along with my fashion choices… and as we know with fashion, make-up, hair and articles of clothing/accessories all go hand-in-hand :)

I think strong brows are beautiful. I style mine myself because I refuse to let anyone touch them (they always make them too thin). A strong brow is classes so if you're born with it flaunt it. Kim Kardashian is a beautiful example… love how her brows are as close together as porrible but still look impeccable.

Loooooove this one. And the very first thing I did notice is the girl on the right because of her brows. The arch of her brow and the shape of her face gives me the impression she is up to something. She is Peter Pan for sure.

  265. Alyssa

    May 7, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Hilarious. Only after the update was posted have people started saying that the eyebrows were what they noticed first…though hardly anyone mentioned it before!

I definitely think a fuller brow is a stylistic choice that is in trend right now. The fact that so many commenters admit to having over-plucked in the past and now want thicker brows suggests so.

Grooming habits, although of course a personal choice, can easily be influenced by trend (think shaving habits in general, girls' fingernail length, etc). What I find most interesting is what this means for individuality: Having particular grooming habits in focus as a trend makes the seemingly automatic habitual process of grooming more of a choice. And as more and more options are made conscious, they are soon considered yet another way to express one's personal style.

OMG! The strong eyebrow was the first and ONLY thing I noticed about this picture. Strong eyebrows are my world and I've kept mine nice and bushy since I was a child.

I don't think it should be trendy, I think every woman should work towards creating an eyebrow that is meant for her face.

The thing with strong eyebrows, is that you also need to be a strong woman and wear it proud!

This girl could be wearing anything at all and she would still stop me in my tracks. She's gorgeous and has obviously found the perfect brow.

I think strong eyebrows can definitely be a statement. Eyebrows are one of the face's most expressive features. My own brows are dark, thick, and the only plucking I do is in the very middle to avoid a unibrow. As a swarthy brunette surrounded by delicate blonds who pluck all but the bare minimum of brow hairs, I think it helps me stand out as unique, and it looks playful, rather than severe.

i absolutely adore natural brows- the whole fashionable craze of lightening brows seems ridiculous. Brows are meant to adorn the eye, if i could , i'd tell most women to start grooming instead of plucking. The quintescence of a balanced face must include great cheekbones, great skin, groomed (!) brows and lightening make up. The best face is the fresh face.
