I have to say I agree. There is something about both those outfits that SCREAMS 2005. If they were at a Rave, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised. Very tired indeed. Belly shirts and low rise bottoms and funky hair? REALLY? What are we missing, Princess Leia buns? OMG! As if!
A well-loved pair of jeans that have ripped because of wear (as opposed to cheesy pre-ripped jeans) are just perfectly cool in their embodiment of a wabi-sabi spirit & aesthetic. Like a beaten-up motorcycle jacket, a tattered pair of Chucks, or an ancient t-shirt that’s been cut up and altered so it can still be worn, those jeans are a little piece of personal history.
I know that for some folks, that simply makes no sense–things that aren’t “just right” are just wrong. But for some of us, the worn, tattered, and ripped are the Velveteen Rabbits of style–they’ve taken on a life & beauty of their own.
*looks down happily at jeans which are now sporting 2 generations of patches*
I’m pretty careful not to slam looks I don’t like, because usually I’m not understanding what the person is attempting to do. But it took me awhile to notice her lovely two tone hair. Maybe if she’d worn a different coloured shirt? Brown? Grey just doesn’t pick up the lovely hair colour that well, and then her jeans, which fit pretty well, are a little too washed out. It makes an outfit that is very casual look sloppy, which probably wasn’t the intended effect. Weirdly she isn’t carrying a purse.
