Rust seems to be the hot color of the moment..perhaps more so than tangerine. I can’t decide if that’s because there are more rustbuckets on the road (drivers don’t have the $ for repairs) or folks are tired of neon orange and green.
Sexy girl riding a bike, with a beautiful neck back.
Only the second time that I look at the photo that I saw the prosthesis.
And she’s still sexy!
BEAUTIFUL
The perfect bike-look!
Was my first thought but then I searched her leg and now I must say:
I raise my invisible hat for you! I don’t guess that many people are selfconfident enough for such a look!
Its just beautiful, her back is gorgeous and the way her hair sweeps to the side – stunning.
I’m a bit confused by her legs.
Does she have a prosthetic limb?
The first thing that I noticed, was that her leg was missing. I really thought that you had photoshopt the picture. Pretty awesome that she daires to go in the city with a short skirt. Amazing picture, like always! Love it. <3
Such a beautiful and very inspiring portrait! This perfectly reflects how fashion and style is not related to a certain canon of beauty nor to a specific height, silhouette, budget or skin color… is about feeling beautiful with who you are in your particular spot in life, is about making the most out of your life with the blessings you’ve got! Lovely!
Oh, I really love this, Scott. I liked the photo and what she’s wearing before even noticing her right leg. I’m so proud of this woman whom I don’t know at all, because she overcame a difficult situation and went on to ride her bike and be stylish about it. Very cool.
Incredible. This is the real art. To evoke the emotions, to evoke the ideas, the feelings. Fashion is art as well, but it’s more for the personal purposes, to express yourself, to show your personal area. But this picture, is what the photographers are trying to do. Capture the moment, that may influence the audience. This short second of an immense meaning.
My mom used to tell me when I was younger, that a woman’s back is the sexiest part of her body.
She shows no curves, it never looks vulgar, but it’s totally beautiful.
What an amazing, beautiful, and inspiring shot! It shows that fashion has more to do with attitude, confidence, and inner beauty radiating to all, than wearing the latest fad.
Congratulations on capturing such a wonderful subject and sharing it with all of us!
Preciosa! Belleza! Que fuerza! No volvere a quejarme en mi vida! Que leccion de vida! No tengo que ver su cara para saber que espiritu libre es. Inmensa profundidad!La vida no deja de sorprenderme. Gracias Scott!
I always go back more than once to your blog each day, I love to look at the photos. They calm me, and inspire me. It was only on my second visit that I got it, and my heart stopped.
So powerful. Thank you.
her style and taste are delightful. exposed back always feels sexier to me than having my breasts exposed…….also awesome that her leg is in like color palette.
proof yet again that beauty, confidence, and power over self are the best jewelry!
This is one of the most beautifull shots i’ve seen in a while. The colour combination, the simbiosis between her clothes, the bike, her leg… Just beautifull, thanks :)
I think that is possibly the best photo you have ever taken. She literally embodies the essence of the present moment and one can feel its lightness and simplicity instantly. Remarkable.
It took me like 30 seconds to realize that she has a prothesis. As anyone else says I will never ever complain about anything. It is amazing how brave people can be. Congratulations brave, bold and beautiful woman!!!!
This is the most beautiful picture I’ve ever seen in my life. She dresses her personality. She looks through fashion, and her sense is strong. You’re genius, Scott. Congratulations.
me encantaría que esta chica algun dia leyera todo lo que está escrito en esta página para que siga siendo asi de segura de sí misma, y supiera el efecto que logra en los demás.
Excelente foto!
Like most kids who commented here I saw the prosthesis a few seconds after I admired her bare back. This is a very brave woman right here. Proves that life moves on, as well as style. Beyond beautiful.
You’re pictures lately have had a very emotional quality to them, showing people vs. fashion as they really are. I LOVE this photograph. What a great aura of strength (in her active pose, and her studry shoes) yet vulnerablity and elegance in her exposed back. Such a beautiful image, and I am happy that you caught it.
This has to be one of the most moving, beautiful photos I’ve ever seen on your blog, or anywhere. The colors, the light, the angle…so much happening in a single picture frame. Thank you !
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. i follow your site but i never comment.
Whilst i find all your photographs incredible, this one here is just the best. The photo says a thousand words but only evokes one feeling- LIFE IS GOOD…
This photo reminds me of Aimee Mullins, who has many pairs of prosthetic legs and they even made her do things other people can’t, like changing her height for example…
I’d like to see this in the “Best of 2012″ photo line-up. I hope that you could find her again and photograph a great set for those that enjoy bicycling and women. She is rather resplendent and as is your abilities. Thanks from a not-so-bombastic style prone individual.
Absolutely amazing, such a beautiful image of a strong woman doing what she loves – no matter what.
This is image is so inspiring to see, as Zura mentioned this photo also reminds me of the strength and courage of Aimee Mullins.
This image absolutely speaks a 1,000 words and it gives me the same goose bumps as when I first heard the wise and strong words of Aimee Mullins via her Ted talks.
I’ve recently recovered from a bicycle accident where I severely broke my right leg. To see such beauty and strength captured in this photo, makes me evermore grateful for where I’m fortunate enough to be today.
no word to describe..just a normal girl cycling and even very stylish!
no word she is beautiful..hope you can find her again and put her in your new book and that we can see her face and her beautiful hair color!
just THANK YOUK for this amazing picture
Heavens, I didn’t know until I saw the word “prosthesis” go by as I scrolled down, so I scrolled right back up. And it is just the best colour. Beautiful picture of a girl on a bike.
I guess you are one of those “no hands” cyclists I see go by. (I never mastered this.) But perhaps you were not on a bike.
its the quiet elegance of this lady that dis-allowed me from seeing her true condition. i saw her prosthetic the second time, like most of the viewers and realized its because thats not what defines her. her style and her ease of self, are so strong thats what makes her so lovely. and thats what you see.
Strong picture. Or should I say: strong person….
Self confident, open, powerful, playful. And somehow the shoe on the prosthesis draws my attention. Makes the leg extra ‘normal’.
That’s my hair, that’s my skirt, and that is definitely my gold leg! Looking at this photo, I realize I need a leg in platinum and jet black so I can always color coordinate this well!
I am honored by Mr. Schuman and thoroughly flattered by everyone’s comments.
I have always believed that a person’s spirit holds a strength that neither the mind nor the body could ever challenge. My leg has always been a part of who I am but it is not the definition of my character.
For me, ‘one leg’ is low on my list of importance.
Rock some sunshine!
Jessie
P.S. I had cancer when I was eight years old. If you would like to know more, check out my blog, http://www.goldmettle.blogspot.com, so The Sartorialist can get back to fashion.
Agreed. there’s a story here–and if she’s interested in talking, as a bike commuter and bike advocate, I’d certainly be listening..ask some questions, etc
please email me at fadysfca@gmail.com if you find out who this person is.
I’ve never seen a prosthesis made that way (as opposed to the more traditional beige calf-shaped ones); I hear many people are opting for prostheses that lay bare the mechanisms, valuing the functional beauty itself. That’s neat how people are able to use their choices of prostheses as self-expression now, as this woman’s sartorial choices show.
The other mechanics of her outfit are a mystery to me, though. What is the bra situation? (um, braless on a bike would hurt for me). I’ve never been able to 1. get my belt to stay just so that way or 2. bike in a billowing skirt. But it’s pretty.
the prosthetic leg itself looks beautiful. it looks to be built so simply, minimal in design. it’s her most unique fashion accessory. with confidence like hers, there would never be stigma or weakness in that which makes us unique in a population of millions and billions.
Love the look.Nice pictures that depicts style; whether be in streets or in an abandoned building. The color of the skirt suits her, she looks nice even in that leg. Inspiring!
I loved the picture so much that it took me a while to notice the leg. Everything says freedom and comfort in her own skin. Congratulations Jessie for giving such a great example that with courage every day is a new chapter to write in the book of our live. Scott, one of the photos I’ve liked the most.
i see this girl around the east village very often and she always looks incredible, super stylish, rocking the prosthetic with no care in the world.
the first time i saw her it was the last thing i noticed, she’s beautiful and exudes so much confidence.
i know a couple of other people with prosthetic limbs and they hide them away, so much respect to this girl who clearly couldn’t care less and never lets it affect her style.
It was only after reading some comments that I realised what I didn’t see earlier. Don’t mean to be dramatic but all the positive and encouraging comments brought tears to my eyes. I hope the girl in the pix sees all these great words for her…
Thanks, Jessie, for your response & the link to your blog. But mostly thanks for the line “Rock some sunshine”–I’ll be rocking some in your honor this week, and I hope you don’t mind that I may start using that line myself! :)
this shot is incredible… i didn’t even notice her leg on first glance! that says a lot about her confidence and spirit. you’ve really captured a beautiful photo and idea. very inspiring
Is this a trend in aesthetich? The shot meets the premiere of Rust and Bone, the new movie by Jacques Audiard, where Marion Cotillard walks and makes love on prothesis …
it took me several moments to make sense what this photo encompassed. the movement, colors and sensuality give form to beauty and it was surprising to find it tied to an unlikely reality. it is an amazing image as it seems to enthrall and inspire all-in-one – what heady combination. so, all i can really say is thank you for sharing!
Everything about this picture is beautiful. The folds of the dress, the composition, the rich colors. I just love braided belts like that. I wear them whenever I can sneak them into an outfit.
inspiring and humbling…there goes this stylish woman riding her bike making it all look easy. one of my fave sartorialist pics ever. and that’s sayin’ somethin’.
This is indeed an iconic sartorialist image. This image makes me cry…I don’t really even understand why exactly. Humbling? Very much so. She is so effortlessly stylish and free and purposeful.
Great picture! The girl has style, courage and attitude. Looking at the pic and warm comments make me cry. So powerful and inspiring! Thanks for your great pic!
“I have always believed that a person’s spirit holds a strength that neither the mind nor the body could ever challenge. My leg has always been a part of who I am but it is not the definition of my character.” -Gold Mettle, she said exactly what I believed in…
Currently obsessed with how people wear their outfits whilst riding bikes – there are lots of restrictions and things to think about. Glad to see you appreciate someone doing it right!
This girl is Jessie Rowe, one of the greatest and most beautiful people i know. She’s my best friend, room mate, soul sister and partner in crime. I’m so glad you shared some of the energy she exudes on your blog. xox
Wow, this is a beautiful photo. So moving, I had to share it with my friends as well. In the photo she just exudes self confidence, which is awesome. She seems like an awesome person I’d want to meet.
This picture left me speechless. It touches on so many levels. I admire her for her style sense and confidence in riding her bike without a care in the world. The photographer has a great eye for not only outstanding fashion but takes the pictures with such care and thoughtfulness. I need to leave Canada and move to NYC!
I was stunned at what I saw, when I looked carefully and I must say there’s this something in the photo, the power of that girl, I guess, that makes me come back and look again and again. I, myself, have an invasion into my body of a similar kind, invisible from the outside , but this is just so much more brave and obvious and I love this girl for not trying to go around complaining about it, as that’s what I understand about her, when I see the photo… something similar to this surfer’s story, Bethany Hamilton, who’s arm had been bitten away by a shark, and who says, she’s only the more special this way… WOW! These things really got me thinking lately. Thank you for the photo.
I would love to see her from the front. Everything I see in this picture is breathtaking. She is comfortable in her skin as she rides gracefully through the city.
It’s funny how our eyes are attracted to our insecurities. When I first saw this image I was drawn to her back b/c I wish I had a stronger back. Then I looked again and gasped at my tunnel vision *because* of my insecurity.
Thank you so much! This post highlighted what I need to work on as a person. Letting go of my insecurities.

You’re pictures lately have had a very emotional quality to them, showing people vs. fashion as they really are. I LOVE this photograph. Absolutely amazing, such a beautiful image of a strong woman doing what she loves – no matter what.
This is image is so inspiring to see, as Zura mentioned this photo also reminds me of the strength and courage of Aimee Mullins.
This image absolutely speaks a 1,000 words and it gives me the same goose bumps as when I first heard the wise and strong words of Aimee Mullins via her Ted talks.

its the quiet elegance of this lady that dis-allowed me from seeing her true condition. i saw her prosthetic the second time, like most of the viewers and realized its because thats not what defines her. her style and her ease of self, are so strong thats what makes her so lovely. and thats what you see.

The girl in this photo is me!

But it’s pretty.

i see this girl around the east village very often and she always looks incredible, super stylish, rocking the prosthetic with no care in the world.
the first time i saw her it was the last thing i noticed, she’s beautiful and exudes so much confidence.
i know a couple of other people with prosthetic limbs and they hide them away, so much respect to this girl who clearly couldn’t care less and never lets it affect her style.

it took me several moments to make sense what this photo encompassed. the movement, colors and sensuality give form to beauty and it was surprising to find it tied to an unlikely reality. it is an amazing image as it seems to enthrall and inspire all-in-one – what heady combination. so, all i can really say is thank you for sharing!
