That's why black never goes out of favor, especially with the fashion crowd. You could pack these outfits in an overnight bag, and with enough underwear you could get outfits for perhaps a week! I wish they were happier-looking, but they are tremendously stylish and that's enough! Jorge from WPB
I now think of Toms in a whole different way. Plus the topshop bag… it is nice seeing a fun bag every once in a while :) overall, these are both so fun
Great shot. The long black ballet skirt with footless tights, flats, & black leather jacket really works because she's tall, slim, pretty, and has great attitude. They both look like they don't take themselves, or fashion, too seriously, and are having fun with it, which to me is the essence of good style.
I've noticed (& have been posting since the spring) that on London streets, black is the new black and it's carried thru the summer.
I don't care when you shot it: I predict that black (along with grey) will be a summer classic. Not that it will ever knock white out completely, but it's a close contender.
The outfit and style of the girl on the right is absolutely brilliant. Ethical, perfect mix of masculine and feminine, so classic in matching shades of black. Love it!!!
For the rainy grey summer we've had, I'm enjoying the black layers–and white "pops" make a welcome change from all the b/w patterns of last year. Interesting pieces, infinitely re-combined–they could trade parts for next week. But, yes, smile–you look plenty fierce already.
It does my heart glad to see someone wearing Toms…She has the style of my youngest daughter that I always admire how see utilizes her clothes…I love the brick street!!! The girls look like they simply belong there.
They look like a couple of modern ninjas. I bet you had to back away after this shot, or he would have sliced your head of with his umbrella-blad– they're that fierce.
i was all over new york the past two months hoping to run into you and get snapped, but you weren't anywhere in sight! These girls look awesome though!!
awesome! I love that she's wearing TOMS! they have some really cool styles other than that basic black on their site (www.TOMSshoes.com)! it's cool to see ppl on the street who also care about giving back.
When you are wearing an almost all black outfit, 999 out of 1000 times it will look amazing. I dare the people to wear more colors. It's very hard to combine different colours. Imagine these girls wearing three completely different colours, they would look ugly. It's not always about the cloths, it's actually always about mixing colours.
what i'd like to know is when this photo was taken? it surely wasn't on Aug 13th with the boiling 1000 degrees we've had out here this week; no one in their right mind would ever wear this in August in nyc, would they? So just curious to know. They look mad cool though. Now if only I weren't sweating just by looking at them… ;)
is no one else a bit perplexed by the fact that it's very difficult to tell if the person on the left is male or female? That mystery has taken over my ability to analyze the rest of the picture.
LOVE the vibes emanating from the figure on the left. This is the kind of energy i aspire to communicate through my dress. ->COOL<- A product of the zeitgeist, an association of composure and self-control!
Love the skirt on the right! but damn I am tired of the edgy angst expressions. what the hell is so wrong with looking like a pleasant person? sheesh. no need for the blue steel 24/7
~male and female version of the other – very fierce look. it always fascinates me to see umbrella as a fashion accessory – it adds up some strange vibe.
I am not so sure this photo was taken recently & perhaps Sartorialist, Scott can fill us in. The weather has been incredibly hot here. Also, to the right side is a person that is blurred but also dressed in black & he/she appears to have some sort of coat on as well. As for the look itself – they're kids with great imagination. Black is black & always complimentary to anyone.
Great photo. But let's face it when there is sooooo much thought going into ones duds it just looks way to contrived. It's like they are almost going out looking for Scott so they can get snapped up. I am all about looking funky but not when you loose sleep the night before thinking about what you are going to put on the next day. Sorry yet again "I'm no havin it!!"
Love shots like these but I also hope you continue posting photos of people who, as you said before, "just want to look nice" instead of screaming fashion with a capital F.
i love seeing pictures of summer fashion: scarfs, pants, leather jackets, socks! it's 95, 62% humidity where i am sitting right now. high-waisted shorts and a loose tank are even too much. i would literally cook if i were wearing a bomber. over-heat in seconds if socks were involved. looking cool and staying cool is such a struggle. i envy these ladies.
Although I like and am interested in the girl on the right's shear skirt paired with leggings, I do not particularly care for these two people and their style. For me, they are taking themselves and their clothes too seriously.
I'm sitting here in 100+ degree Austin weather wondering when I can dress like that girl on the right. I'm also impressed that she made Tom's shoes look so cool. Maybe I'll even go buy a pair at one of the many hippie stores in town later today.
I saw this picture in Vogue and I read the aticle.I would love to have the sence of confidence to find someone on the street and photograph them. Are some people really frightened when you approach them?
I love the way that the girl on the left is clutching onto an art block.
would you like to follow my blog and I will follow yours too!
I love how the one on the right has that sheer skirt so you can still see her skinny legs, which balances the solid darkness of her jacket. Looove her Tom's too! I wanna get a pair!
I am much of a new comer to your website after reading an article in UK Vogue and I cannot believe what I have been missing! Amazingly inpisring images…will you ever come to London? Since it's feeling a little left out…
I owe you another post. It seems that every time you've got an NYC shot, I criticize it for the fantastical, impractical high heels some one is inevitably wearing in that urban hiking environment.
Now, here, finally you show shoes in NYC that make total sense. Thanks!
So many posters know what the person on the right is wearing and love them. Toms. I'll look them up.
If you saw a couple of girls walking down the road dressed like this.. you've half admire them for their obviously good taste and half wonder if you could ever pull this look off yourself. Who needs accessories when you've got that stare/pout combo. Black clearly is timeless..
Hi! First time leaving a message here but have been reading your blog! I saw your book displayed on a shelf at the B&N @ Lincoln Center in NYC. So cool! Ny0311
I think they should be the new wave New Yorker look to emulate…at least for the bolder, younger and fashion focused individuals who will go there to live or visit. 'Like it a lot!
Wow, all of your images are so beautiful and put a smile on my face. I really love how this photo looks with all the black, it just proves that black will always stay a classic.
Yes, absolutely they look great, but are they real?
After all, the temperatures have been in the 70s and 80s, and the humidity has been of the kind you can swim in. Yet both these ladies are in black with long sleeves. And whether that lucious jacket is plastic or leather, its owner has got to be basting in her own – um – liquids.
Show me this as on the street fashion at the end of September, maybe. But now, in the midst of August?
Sheesh people– lighten up, they're just kids. I think they look fine. Nothing exceptional, but nothing too contrived either, they're obviously art school students and honoring the classic all-black dress code of such. I think it's fun. And I agree with those who say the young lady is a DEAD RINGER for a young Parker Posey. The young man reminds me of a young Ric Ocasek (of The Cars).
The portrait was obviously snapped some time ago– I'm sure they would not be wearing this in the current heat weave.
i saw this in the H&M magazine. I must admit when i first saw this photo, it's when i knew that the colour; BLACK will never die. These girls sure knows style!
What REALLY caught my eye is the umbrella. I've been looking for one like that for the longest of times. I've been following Scott for a long long time now but this is the picture that really speaks to me. Thanks!
I think I'm in love with this photo. This is my second comment on this post… Just can't help falling in love with this photo ; buildings, cobblestones, and this chic couple!
Love the slender dark lines against cobble-stoned SOHO, but I feel these stylings are from trying too hard. I do like the ponytailed one's old Ray Bans.
I wear black year around, also in summer; linen, light weight jerseys, silk…
I don't believe this was shot lately. Look at the man on the back ground; long over coat and a cap or hat. So maybe these cool kids have taken few layers off for the summer?
ouch, those outfits look miserable for the weather we have been experiencing in the city. great ideas for fall though! a leather jacket in august?? im sweating in my apt just thinking about it!!!
I love the looks on their faces! Its far more real looking then “smile for the camera”. Very dignified. And the outfits are just as great now as they were then!

i love seeing pictures of summer fashion: scarfs, pants, leather jackets, socks! it's 95, 62% humidity where i am sitting right now. high-waisted shorts and a loose tank are even too much. i would literally cook if i were wearing a bomber. over-heat in seconds if socks were involved. looking cool and staying cool is such a struggle. i envy these ladies.

Although I like and am interested in the girl on the right's shear skirt paired with leggings, I do not particularly care for these two people and their style. For me, they are taking themselves and their clothes too seriously.

Dear Sart:
I owe you another post. It seems that every time you've got an NYC shot, I criticize it for the fantastical, impractical high heels some one is inevitably wearing in that urban hiking environment.
Now, here, finally you show shoes in NYC that make total sense. Thanks!
So many posters know what the person on the right is wearing and love them. Toms. I'll look them up.

If you saw a couple of girls walking down the road dressed like this.. you've half admire them for their obviously good taste and half wonder if you could ever pull this look off yourself.
Who needs accessories when you've got that stare/pout combo.

I'm a bit dubious.

Cheers,
PLO
