Garance and I stopped over in LA on the way back from Australia.
The light here is incredible. Garance has been filming with her 5D like crazy.
Eating breakfast outside on a patio in the middle of December is something I could get use to quickly.
Book Soup is a great bookshop. Almost too many great book in one place and I can only carry a few more pounds in my suitcase. I did buy the new Paolo Roversi book Studio there, what a great book.
Opening Ceremony is really dominating the fashion scene here. No other store has nearly the edit and variety of collections that they offer.
So this leads me to painful question. What happened to Fred Segal?
I see they’ve dropped Dries Van Noten but picked-up Amber Valetta’s new collection…interesting.

I can see why Opening Ceremony would dominate in L.A. Very casual and deconstructed items usually. They don't do it for me here in New York… Not tailored enough.

Just received Roversi's book – Studio from Amazon yesterday – kinda make you want to use a big old film camera again!! His studio looks pretty basic but the work he produces is beautiful. Wish I could look as smooth as Garance does with a 5D in my hands.

I still love Fred Segal for its retro charm, the one in West LA especially. It has gone down hill since its glory days, I assume, but there's something really fun and very LA about it. I like the classic department store set up.
Also, call me when Opening Ceremony has a 'bead bar'.

Fred Segal (as a Fashion Ideal) died many, many moons ago. Aside from Barneys New York (of L.A.), Opening Ceremony (big smile for Jenn over there) and Confederacy, it's pretty hard around here… Hmmm, which reminds me, is Maxfield's still there at the end of Melrose?
At any rate… Looking forward to seeing your and Garance's photos from here-abouts and (of course) your coverage from Italy!!!

I'm in LA working for 6-7 months and have often asked the question – if the Sartorialist came to town, where would he shoot? There seems to me, as a Londoner, no street-life because apart from the malls, people don't amass and the city's culture and hence her fashion is compromised. Does this (and the movie/TV business) explain the focus on of celebrity? Many questions but at least one Scott can actually answer for sure – where did you photograph here?

Book Soup IS very cool, yes. I went to an Anderson Cooper book signing there about 3 years ago.
Um cool places to take photos…maybe Silverlake? Or around Santa Monica? Hell, there are even super styling people at Trader Joes XD I hope your little trip is fun.

So are you saying that Fred Segal's is taking a superficial route by dropping Dries Van Noten and picking up Amber Valetta's new collection?
If there's some truth to that then welcome to LA. Take a wait-and-see attitude on Amber Valetta's collection; who expected such sophistication and real design from the Olsen twins line.

I disagree, although Opening Ceramony is very dominant the best part about LA are the small boutiques and flea markets. Opening Ceramony is a great store, however you don't get the same California feeling as you do when you walk into stores like South Willard or Scout. Yes Opening Ceramony has a great selection, but these stores have such a small and well chosen selection you'd never leave questioning your purchase.

The Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea market, the 2nd Sunday of the month is a Gold Mine of L.A. street fashion on view and for sale.Its a magnet for the International Fashonistas and The looks show up on
Robertson,Melrose and runways later!
And, next time check out super hip collector bookstores like Arcana in Santa Monica and The Lead Apron in Hollywood!

Why don't you ever take LA street style photos? I know we're not as stylish as New Yorkers but cmon! give us a chance! and while i do have to say Opening Ceremony is great, LA style is very much based on thrift stores and vintage clothing…but on the surface, it's all really fake. It shows when you see 13 year old girls wearing grandma sweaters.

Fred Segal LA has dropped their price point dramatically. They're trying to adapt to the recession, but instead of curating small up-and-coming designers, they're opting for mass produced or celebrity driven lines, on top of letting go of their best salespeople. They've definitely lost much of their long term and high profile clientele. It is truly the end of an era…

i agree with the other poster who says it's all about the little boutiques here now. there are too many to name and new ones popping up all the time. glad we have an opening ceremony here though…
a great place to shoot is outside the arclight cinema. lots of people going in and out, a real cross section of LA… and of course the farmers markets bring out an eclectic mix as well…

You should also seriously check out ZAINAB on Melrose near M Cafe! She's a gorgeous woman from Sierra Leon–schooled in London, worked for CDG in Paris. Anyway, she has a beautifully edited boutique with lines like Jeremy Laing & Ohne Titel that you can't find anywhere else in LA.

Good comment on Dries. I think a lot of people don't get his clothes, and his collections, at least for men, are so thinly represented at stores. But I can say that every piece that I have bought, over many years, I still have and wear. Every time I wear anything of his, it is still very cool and elicits lots of compliments.

Yes, the light is incredible in L.A. right now! I live near downtown, and the mountains as seen from the old 110 driving to Pasadena are amazing. I pray you are able to make it away from the Westside to explore L.A. east of downtown. May I recommend taking the new Goldline from Union Station to Atlantic? Be sure to exit at First and Boyle. You'll take some photograps of cool style for sure, and you will win the hearts of many people.

The problem with Fred Segal (the one on Melrose, anyway) is that all their buyers have left or been sacked and the owner Ron Herman is doing all the buying himself. Blech! It's a shame, really. Maxfield is still fantastic!

south willard, confederacy, american rag (on sale!). come downtown to all the new indie shops but a city isn't about shopping it's about how the people wear it. there may be a good deal of shopping in west LA but life is east of Highland

I disagree that Opening Ceremony is the "dominating" shop here in Los Angeles. It's really a shame where people in this city don't really understand the fashion scene, and look to commercialized boutiques. Opening Ceremony is cool but typical…the cardigan, stripe t-shirt, skinny jean look, and wafers to top it off. I see opening Ceremony akin to American Apparel.
Local fashion boutiques like Zainab have shown to be carrying exclusive labels and trends that cannot be found elsewhere. the same can almost be said for Confederacy, perfectly located in a burgeoning area.

Fred Segal is still the best boutique in L.A. (Or one of the best).
Opening Ceremony, though I admire, hasn't caught fire with the right influencer crowd – just like in NYC, it attracts hipsters. And we're bored of that here. It's sort of like me going to NYC and saying Steven Alan or Freeman's Sporting Club has NYC locked down. Truth is, they don't.
Fred's still takes home the prize for cutting edge and covetable items in their stores, and they continue to break new, relevant designers.

how come you go to australia but nowhere in asia?? I jsut got back from Tokyo and it has always been killing it on the individual and collective level. As I understand, Seoul, Korea is not too far behind either. Hopefully you can find your way to East Asia sometime soon, I think you'll find plenty of material to work with there :) cheers!

To come to LA and not venture east is to never see the part of Los Angeles that has the spirit you capture in your street shots in fashion spots around the world.
Please visit Silverlake, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, Boyle Heights – that's where you'll find style!
I love living here – but the LA I live in is not the one I see in the media … It would be cool for the rest of the world to know there is another side to this city. It isn't all about Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and the Beach.
Its no wonder you never get street shots in Los Angeles if you never go to where there is interesting street life!

I started shopping at Fred Segal Melrose back in the early 90s. I can tell you that throughout that decade, until Barney's NY opened in Beverly Hills, there were no stores cooler than FS and Maxfield's. That mostly had to do with the great buyers and sales staffs that they had then, and sadly don't have now. Maxfield's is better than FS, but overall both have lost their edge. Right now, I'd say the LA fashion scene is more about mixing and matching the high and low, small labels with mass-produced for an overall more relaxed, less fashion-conscious look.
Dries… sorry to disagree with so many, but it's time they dropped him. Back in the 90s Fred Segal devoted and entire upstairs room to Dries. And when a shipment came in it was a stampede of clients. Dries may not be understood everywhere, but he definitely was here in LA, and I for one had a huge collection. However, in the early part of this decade Dries lost it. The clothes stopped being interesting, and the tailoring suffered as well. I still have pieces from back then that look great, but there's very little by Dries that I see now that piques my interest.

When you step in just by the interior design, art, books, and international tea selections, you know your getting something unique in a clothing store and an experience.

fred segal is horrible nowadays. overrun by crap like free people, etc., which is one of the unfortunate sides of LA fashion.
opening ceremony is the best for younger trends, but Sart, for your tastes, check out South Willard. they carry great stuff there that caters to the less hipster person and is one of the best shops i've been to in the country, not just la.
