No one dresses so dignified as this gentleman in these neighborhoods anymore. The style is gone and assumed to be more custom of upper classes. So not true!
Elegant, dignified and stoic; this gentleman has stories to tell for those fortunate enough to make his acquaintance. I'd ask him if he was at Minton's Playhouse when Thelonious Monk was at the piano.
I was just in Harlem yesterday at the Studio Museum and while I was in the neighborhood, I definitely saw street fashion happen. Great photo; very cool, very old school Harlem. ~from Soleil
Do you know what makes this outfit? The sleeve length. Somehow, if they were shorter and revealed cuffs and links, it would seem contrived or too design-y. This way it seems more natural and accessible. Also, the shined shoes and pressed pant are marks of someone who takes care of what they have. Happy Easter!
What a gorgeous portrait of this man. The pose with that cigarette leaving thoughts fly in the smoke, the eyes looking to oneside -somewhere we don't see- maybe seeking for new hopes, the shoes pointing to the other side… just stunning. I love it
You may want to rethink making sweeping assertions and generalizations about "these" neighborhoods (and in general). They make you look ill-informed and thoughtless at best…
Thanks for finally traveling uptown to my neighborhood! I hope you'll spend more time in Harlem and Morningside Heights–there are some great outfits going on here!
I love the bowler. I've contemplated buying one on multiple occasions and haven't done it. I just don't think I'll have a suitable event to wear it to.
This man and my dad would've been contemporaries. I think he looks swell. My dad would've teased him relentlessly about trying to attract the ladies, what with the hat and the white tie.
His ease, seasoned critical gaze, elegant style, seen-it-all supreme confidence could just as easily been a shot from front row Pitti U'omo. Joining him, of course, would be Lino, Ricci bros, Laipo and all the other usual suspect cool cat statesmen of style.
exquisite tonal and textural qualities Scott. Glorious get.

Hi, love this photo, didn't understand the comments about people being offended by Vanessa @ project zen. Wasn't she saying that no one dresses like this anymore?
AHH! This shot is amazinggggggg! I love that his black matches throughout, so it doesn't matter that he has different texture with his suit, socks, bowler, and shoes. I also like that the lighting gives his white tie/shirt/kerchief a pinkish tint. The only thing I don't dig is the glasses/rings. I don't know why, but they seem to detract from the rest for me.
Also he looks weirdly like a thinner version of an English teacher at my school…

Cool. The epitome of cool. Generally I'm not a big fan of black suits or slip ons w/ a suit and tie combo, but this man has pulled it off perfectly. We all know smoking is unhealthy, yet the cigarette just goes well w/ his distinguished look. The whole look captures an era. Bravo!
I viewed the most recent photos, but this was the one that stopped me in my tracks. His body language and the overall composition of the photo are so evocative. The best photos often make one ask questions…and I love the subtle mystery of this very dapper man on a bench.

Nice. Very interesting portrait, and a very cool suit.

Dapper and at ease – that's some serious style.

It would be a rather boring outfit if it wasn't for that white tie. Such a small detail makes all the difference…

When was the last time you saw someone wear a bowler for real! Clearly a man used to dressing with style.

This is beautiful, love the frame of the glasses on his face, as a tiny detail. Overall, just looks so good!

I couldn't imagine seeing anyone dress like this where I come from. This is the most beautiful thing I have seen in a while. I wish more people dressed like this!
