she’s an adorable young girl but that dress is dreadful! It looks like a big bag, in fact it looks a lot like the big bag she’s carrying. I don’t get it. I’m willing to be educated, but…

Oh! I have a pair of sandals so so similar (maybe the same?) now I know how to dress it!

I HEART her smile – it has made this APEC nightmare bearable here in wet Sydney.

Here is what popped into my head the second I saw this charming girl:

    I love your funny face,
    Your sun-ny, fu-ny face…

The smile makes sense, not feeling the bag At All.

    She has a killer smile..wow!
What she wears, I don’t even pay attention to it for her smile alone is brilliant!

To me,this dress of her´s looks fine. She is so pretty with her smile. The bag choice though could have been better.

I love the dress! It makes her look girly, fun and quirky! Great shoes too.

Great way to start the morning! Love the big proportion of the dress as it emphasises those fabulous legs. And her smile is simply beautiful.

Great photo, Sart! This reminds me of my girlfriends when they slip on one of my dress shirts in the morning. Not a look for going out in public, I would have thought.

Endearingly disjunct. And maybe that is why it is so forgivable and admirable simultaneously.

Clothing-wise….I don’t love it. Not at all. As far as her attitude and smile goes …beautiful.

adorable shoes, beautiful girl, great legs. because the dress doesn’t fit right at the shoulders, it does not look right. i’m surprised you suspended your usually critical eye for tailoring when it came to this piece. i guess you were blinded by her lovely smile.

scott, im so glad you pointed out the fact that the picture will appear larger if you click on it, because at first it looked like she had a mustache, but then i clicked, and that lady has the most beautiful smile ever! :D it cheered me up just looking at her. and i love her dress, she looks like a lot of fun

Yes, she does have a lovely smile and face, but I have to say this style is not always pulled off…and in this is one of those instances… the dress is so unflattering. The neckline is too high, she looks like she is wearing a square tent. Thank goodness she has skinny legs and chose nice shoes becuase the rest is a bit off…including the bag, which to me looks a bit like a men’s bag.

I agree: adorable young woman and shoes; awful dress and bag. Really, this looks like something specifically designed to be ugly. Clashing colors, check; unflattering shape, check; ugly details(sleeves and collar), check. Now that will cost you $600 ;)

When you are as pretty and lively as she is, it doesn’t really matter though.

A smile like that would make anything look great!

    Beautiful legs as well.

I don’t know if I would call the overall look perfect but the smile is certainly a winner.

Is that a Marc Jacobs dress? If not, it reminds me of those I just saw in a department store catalog and wondered why in the world anyone in the world would not only wear THAT, let alone pay $500 for the privelege. Does that make me officially like my parents to finally admit: “Okay, I just don’t get it – I could get that at Goodwill”? Plus that’s my least favorite sleeve length.

But in the catalog the dresses were modeled stiffly and dourly. The esprit here is I think what Marc (or whoever) had in mind when they send a dress out.

In kindergarden (1975), I had the exact same cut garment that we called in French a “Sarreau” – a “smock” maybe in English?

Reminds me of youth and innocence… and comfort too! Beautiful girl.

a big sacky dress is not cute. her smile is gorgeous though!

wow. in love. i also like how women are finding new ways to show off their figure than just exposing the torso. look at this woman’s arms, leg, and neck. whatever is under that dress is going to be just as stunning.

The dress wouldn’t work on *me* but what a beautiful girl! That smile! That skin! Those legs! So beautifully captured in that light. She looks graceful and alive. Well done, Sart.

Pretty girl, nice shoes, but does anyone like her dress or bag? Why? I think they look schlumpy.

  33. Anonymous

    September 7, 2007 at 1:41 pm

I don’t like the colors, cut, pattern, form, or fit of that item of clothing when it’s worn alone as a dress like that.

I’m perfectly okay with the bag and shoes, and of course this is probably just showcasing her lovely smile or something like that, but that shirt dress thing she’s wearing just does not appeal.

    ok, sart.
you have a crush on her because of that megawatt, heart-crushing smile. and the eyes. and the legs.

you must have missed the “and then there’s maude” schmatta that’s eating her petite frame.

there are windows in brooklyn missing their coverings. . .

Well, the bag is obviously a work choice, so no prob there for me. She’s just carrying a portfolio people.

She is very cute, and as such can pull the dress off, but it really does make her look like an aging toddler. No shape at all. Anyone over 23 would look a fool in this.

I love the site, I love the clothes, but all the young women here look exactly the same.

    September 7, 2007 at 3:14 pm

tres jolie mon petite choux choux, a modern audrey hepburn in Roman Holiday, the dress is perfect, what a great print and length, and those shoes are a seamless elegant foil, but lets be honest the best part is her smile. also i must say in defense of the bag, it is simple and utilitarian, (and able to carry all of a girl’s essentials) where can i get one?

  39. The Sartorialist

    September 7, 2007 at 3:24 pm

just to be clear – it was winding so that is why the dress looks more full

I continually love that you shoot “real” people. Real style is not perfect and the people who continually critique the pictures should not be so harsh. How about they post every outfit they wear everyday?

Beautiful photography, smile, and genuine style.

I love the girl, I love her smile, I lover legs. I also love her dress, her sandals and her bag and that cobblestone street on which she stands. I think I should move to New York.

  42. Anonymous

    September 7, 2007 at 4:54 pm

… but until I do move to New York, I can always visit 13th St & 9th Ave on google maps street view. But, the photography and the people don’t look nearly as good there as they do here.

    I love a good smock!

I’m tempted to want the same dress with contrasting pattern or solid fabric for the collar & cuffs, but would that make it look too “too” (babyish, clownish, contrived, costumey)?

She’s stunningly pretty but that dress looks like it came from the Oompa Loompa wardrobe room.

Although this dress is shapeless, it really works on her for several reasons- first, because of its short length, second, because of its sleeve detail, and third because of her overall radiance.

love the dress. hate the ads. sorry, i had to say it.

the negative comments on this look are really interesting. this past season (it seems like much longer) has been about the short babydoll and smock dresses. it seems to me that this young woman (and she is young, which is key) beautiful smile and legs aside, has interpreted it in a very fresh way that really works for her. don’t see a problem with the fit, the bag, or the shoes — actually, i think the shoes are great.

walking along the streets of nyc i no longer look at women in childish attire, which i am thoroughly sick to death of seeing everywhere and on everyone, but i would definitely have seen this girl and gotten a huge charge out of her.

Might be a man’s pyjama top she is wearing as a dress, even so, I simply love the confidence with which she wears this- not to be found in any magazine- great! Congrats, Sart.

Beautiful girl with a beautiful smile. She would look good in just about anything. I do think we are going to look back on this particular style (short ballooning dresses)and wonder what on earth we were thinking!!

  53. Verdiales

Um, isn’t the wind blowing into her dress, poofing it out? Look how the fabric is straining against the buttons. That might account why it looks like a sack in this picture. The color is great on her, and she has wonderful legs and a great smile.

    What’s the problem?

  54. Verdiales

Oh, sorry Sart, I read about a dozen comments and posted without reading yours.

I saw this girl at the shows yesterday an i think what the pic doesnt capture is the way the dress moves – which to me is part of its appeal.
It was (to borrow a line from Bowie)
“floating in a mosta peculiar way…”
I think she looks great. 100%.

  57. Anonymous

    September 8, 2007 at 8:10 pm

how adorable. 99% of women would look awful in this dress, but she pulls it off. shoes are great, too. i have to agree with the poor choice of bag, but let’s cut her some slack, maybe she is carrying a laptop?!

This image actually PROVES scientifically that a truly lovely woman can make even a bag look good. The shirt…as Paul Reiser would say…is “not so much.” But somehow her in the shirt…it kinda works.

    Nice outfit, who’s the designer?

obvioously the wind is blowing her dress. People need to get over the sack comments. It’s called fashion.

  63. Anonymous

    September 11, 2007 at 11:39 pm

love the print of the dress and the general idea although it’s a bit over-large even for the shift style. the bag doesn’t make much sense with the outfit but is probably being used for practical purposes. she looks adorable despite these few very small problems.

  64. Pearl

    September 12, 2007 at 12:52 am

To her defense, I think it was a little windy and the wind made her shirt dress look so poofy. But it also is over-sized because it drapes over her shoulders, maybe it’s a vintage piece because the last button is different..

  65. Anonymous

    September 15, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Wow! I never realised i didn’t think before I dressed this morning could look so good. If only all us mere mortals could wear what appears to be an oversized purple garbage bag and still manage to look so so SO good!

Looks like a light coat to me, very memorable. She must be wearing something totally hot under the coat. What’s it looks like when sitting down? I think the only thing needs to be changed is the bag!
