Never again do we have to choose between going on safari or attending a polo match. In all seriousness though; cargo shorts will forever remain the bastard son of an Elizabethan man's skirt (the unexplainable slashed pillow thing above his tights). I would rather forget they existed. Great touch of detail in the sleeves though. The rolled cuff strikes a fine balance between neat and scruffy.
I'm loving the overall consensus on this look. Cargo shorts can't really be successful with anything. Dark jeans would make this outfit work superbly though.
Okay, I'm now convinced that cargo shorts can be chic, but then again, I was wearing black silk MC Hammer-style pants last Saturday night, so I understand if my perspective is seen as somewhat suspect…
I like the bagginess of the shorts. he takes that look ('frat boy') and makes it his own in the inimitable Italian way. I think it looks cool. As others have remarked, it is largely about the tighter, shorter cut of the jacket. And, as someone else also said, it's summer! so why not.
Not sure how well the combination works….maybe he is transitioning into the weekend? But the cargo shorts are sexy. Make me think a he could tack a sailboat, drive a Jeep, wouldn't faint if he saw a big spider.
what makes it work is the material of the jacket & shorts is similar. and the 3/4 sleeves with that bit of white peeking out. took a plain khaki jacket and 'deconstructed it' perfectly.
Combined yes, but only in France and/or Italy most likely…even in NY it might just come off as sloppy. But if a man is confident and can carry himself…it just might work. A canvas briefcase of some sort would have pulled it all together.
great picture that sums up the Italian male vanity: the strait-jacket to emphasize the figure, the forced performance of arms and legs tanning, the ankle bracelet (no, I can't stand it!), the rolled sleeves (of jacket!)… at least, tell me that you were in a seaside town!
I think maybe what throws me off is a) the fact cargo shorts have infiltrated Italia, b) the color! If he was wearing one of those denim sportcoats you posted it might work.
Huh. I think it looks great and it doesn't actually look that tricky at all to me. Don't know what I'm missing that this is getting such mixed reviews here.
maybe you had to be there? it looks silly to me. the cargo shorts and jacket look bad. those shoes aren't right for the jacket. and with all those pockets available, he still has to carry his camera?
What a great inspiration for most American men this summer!!!! So tired of the same old bland Kaki bermudas!!! Dress it up with a coordinated linen jacket and you look polished already. Can I forward that picture to all my male friends? ;)
It's all about the proportions, and this guy got them right. The shorts don't balloon out either.
For this to work, I'm thinking the cargo shorts need to stop just above the knee. Going sockless in sneakers helps keep the look casual chic instead of casual sloppy.
Of course, it helps to have a great body and, in this case, muscular legs.

Why does an item of clothing have to belong to the domain of any one group, in this case frat boys? If you think that then it says a lot for A&F marketing. Isn't it more about lifestyle? If you live on the coast it makes perfect sense but perhaps less so if you're from the city. Stereotyping sucks at the best of times and with all things there's cargo shorts and then there's cargo shorts. It's like saying polo shirts are only for upper Eastside tossers.
Its nothing terrible. But it doesn't exactly work. He either needs to take off the jacket and shirt and put on a henley or t shirt; Or else, he needs to take off the jacket and put on some summer slacks or jeans. They just don't go together. I like the shorts, and I like the jacket. But not together. I do like the ankle thing he has going.

I'm against the cargo shorts look. OK, at the beach, in the country, maybe. I think it's dumbing down men, just like the baseball cap (esp. backwards). I'm tired of men dressing like third graders. I want them to start looking like men again. Put on the long pants, dudes!

Still would take a very confident man to pull off.
