I love what Robert has been doing lately mixing caftans with tradition overcoats. Robert is ultra chic almost specifically because what he does is so subtle.
Sartorialist, I just read your biography and it amazed me – you are such an inspiration to me, I have so much respect for you and look foward to your blog everyday.
This echoes the earlier conversation about sleeve length. I like a shorter sleeve length on a coat – male or female. But then, the folded-over caftan sleeve doesn't seem right to me. And it starts to billow out under the coat sleeve.
This is also common when the under garment is a knit and the outer garment is a woven – the shorter outer garment then exposes too much of the underlying sleeve and it looks awkward.
He is avoiding it in these pix – but just barely. He is so pulled-together looking that it doesn't matter for the photos. He just looks great.
Kaftans are one of those timeless traditional garments that look amazing on both men and women! The gentleman wears it really nicely, I'd like to see his summer way of wearing it :)
The detail the kaftan and it trimmings bring to this look feels like it could be picked up in a few seasons, like a moving on from the folk trends. Really inspiring!! Love your blog for that!
I absolutely LOVE the camel colours in the first picture. Robert is always so stylish. But I can't help thinking he'd be so drop dead gorgeous if he just had a shave!
This is excellent. I can understand what you mean about subtly, especially when mixing in elements from other cultures. It's very chic when that piece isn't screaming out for attention.
So many iPhones!! Ha I wonder if you have seen any rooms where every single person is there phone. I wouldn't be surprised. But seriously great photo. He reminds me of someone.
His lack of accessories is part of the style he has created for himself. No hat, scarf, shades, and thankfully no cigar;), only his Hemingway style beard.
It ads to the impression of an adventurous gentleman. As if he were saved from a shipwreck – and given the captain's best coat.
Very Chic Robert and keep the beard (even in summer). A friend who lived in Paris says the Parisiennes don't like bright colours in clothes and mainly wear black. Can this be true?
This man and his style is gorgeous. Always stylish, never too rich with a huge portion of life experience. I can wear these things directly. Where can i find a kaftan like that ?
he looks totally different from my grandpa but in someway and somehow, he reminds me of my grandpa. The vibe. Great photo on another note, ilove the quote.
Being knee length, and worn by a man, would this rather be designated a kurta? Perhaps I am mistaken but I thought caftan/kaftan were worn primarily by women and always are ankle length.
