What an amazing photo! At least 7 people are observing her, with shocked and with such engaged looks and eyes, and giving us viewers the idea that they’re questioning, thinking: who is being photographed amidst a normal day-to-day of us, normal citizens of Istanbul?
Too good, you are like a wild cat; observing their prey. Thank you for constant beautiful food for the eye and mind.
AMAZING!! Being half-turkish I really feel like you’ve captured the essence of Istanbul where the old, conservative meets the new and fashionable! Great shot!!
P.S. Meeting you at the booksigning this summer really felt like Christmas to me. Thank you for your contribution to photography and fashion.
This photo reminds me some shoots from William Klein in Roma during 50′s. People around, the model you chose , buildings all in this picture could be a subject for a conversation.
Wish I could’ve heard your directions for how she was to have her hands and stance for this shot… Did you direct, or was this all her idea? Her hands, stance, and straight-on face/head further lend to the idea of gemoetry in color-blocking.

apart from that great pic.
I love how the woman is looking at the model, super funny.
Also I’m thrilled that Istanbul is making it into TheSartorialist, it’s such a vibrant city that it can certainly be fashion-inspiring!
I love that you finally made your way to the streets of Istanbul. I think Istanbul is a incredible city with great style that harmonizes east and west. This is a perfect example of the socially acceptable habit to stare in the Middle East along with the modern taste of the model.
Without wanting to sound hyperbolic, for me this photo sort of sums up the entire essence of the effect that the fashion world has on its outside environment. Namely that if you look different or unusual through your personal style, you will always, always be stared at. I’ve always dressed a little differently and extravagantly than the norm, even as a young teen, and coming from a small city in middle England meant that I could constantly feel the looks up and down as I walked down the street. Having once been intimidated by the stares, I now revel in them as a woman in her early twenties. Of course, in London or any other major fashion city, being different is distinctly normal, so occasionally it is actually quite nice to go back to my hometown and feel those same stares once again.
p.s. excellent photo, you have really captured a moment. x
it is funny that there is no such place ‘besiktas-cd’ it is not a street it is a plaza…
Im sure you know but still if you go to Nisantasi you can find more stylish people
Great shot. I shoot in that part of Istanbul all the time. I wonder who the subject is. Did you arrange the shoot or was she passing on the street? Great work as usual.
LOLOL this photo reminds me so much of the streets of kolkata!!!every time i take my camera out to take a photo of friends every one stares either at me or the person….plus we get stared at whenever we dress a bit more flamboyantly than what the every day people running around, doing their work wear.this is amazing.
The area that this photograph is taken is middle-working class, where university students hang out also. You really captured how people react to “extraordinary situations” in this shot.
Wow. How these people are gaze at her. It is interesting to see, how pedestrians react, when you take an photo. Would like to see more of this reactions, but I would bet that it is not so interesting in New York or Paris. Yes, Istanbul is still different and I love that you take photos there, not at least because I’m planning a visit there next year. Thanks.
What a unique shot! The expressions on the others’ faces are pretty understandable- this girl rocks her height, and the red coat, those shoes, and the clutch as well! Amazing picture.
I hope you read this because I’d like to say:
You, Scott Schuman, will go down in history as the man who finally bridged the gap between Modernist art photography and modern fashion photography. Bravo! You have a true gift, sir.
I LOVE THIS IMAGE. I’VE NEVER BEEN TO TURKEY BUT THE LOOKS ON THE FACES OF THE BYSTANDERS SEEMS TO BE VERY TELLING. THEY LOOK LIKE BUSY BODIES WANTED TO KNOW WHO THIS LADY IS…
Eveybody is looking at her first of all because she is wearing red, she is incredibly tall for being Turkish and Turkish people are always very curious when there is a camera involved. :)
Luckily tere are still “unsophisticated” people who feel free to stare at someone they find beautiful, or well dressed and are not ashamed to show their interest. The little girl with the pink beret and scarf and red boots is so cute, showing her keen interest in the beautiful model.
I visit your site almost every day and I must say that this is the most stunning photo I’ve seen to date. Everything about it is perfect and I especially like the faces of the pedestrians. Thank you for publishing photos like this daily, which inspire me to make better fashion choices!
Yeah people are staring, because in a country like Turkey you are not suppose to be exposed especially young and beautiful girl like her. That`s why everybody is taring at her
WOW, she is beautiful and I love what she’s wearing, very stylish. I would love it if you checked out my blog, I have interesting fashion posts you might love to read.
If I came across this girl on the street – and her spectacular look-, I surely also stare at her. Great pic, as usual! Love, María José http://nuarbarcat.blogspot.com/
Knowing Turkey, people are staring at her as she is out of context, not out of awe or admiration. Her outfit is absurd, and her gaze is so empty compared to the people around her who seem lively and curious. As for the mixing of veiled Muslims and modern dress you don’t need to go to Istanbul, its a common occurrence in every country nowadays. Its not some exotic phenomenon….
I remember getting this kind of looks around that area with my red boots, mini skirt in late 1980′s. It is not a promenade, it’s a very busy street, those people are probably in rush, trying to catch the next bus or a metro to home or work or whatever… In contrary, she is calm and she knows that she belongs to there and she doesn’t belong at the same time. If this was taken few blocks up to the NISANTASI area, we wouldn’t be discussing the composition, she would easily blend in her “style look alikes” That’s what I like most about this frame. Love it Scott, hope you too like Istanbul too. Best, N.
The brilliant mr. schuman…. ummmmmm chicago perhaps!!!! how is there no book signing here is beyond me!!!! possibly 2nd or third definetly top five cities in the states top ten in the world!!!!! and noooooo Schuman!!!! Whats up with that! good pic though good pic…
The looks of the man on one side and the woman on the other, remind me of the Devil on one shoulder and angel on the other.
This is another remarkable moment frozen in time by you.
HEHEHEHEHE…
I really had so much fun looking at that picture, with all those people, females and males, of different ages, staring at that lady and she seems to say to herself:
“Omg! What an embarrasement… Shame on you, my people!! Are you looking at an alien, by chance, or something like that?! Do me a favour and mind your own business!”
(laughs) *
It’s amusing to see the difference between the lustful look of the man on the left and the sort of annoyed almost jealous stare of the woman on the right. It almost seems like they are a married couple separated by this glorious tall imposing beauty.
What an amazing photograph and such exquisite styling. This red trench is to die for! The stares are suggestive of such a larger social issue. Just fantastic.
Everything about this photo is amazing. The woman looks lovely and strong. The passers by look like they have not often seen a lady that shows herself with such confidence very often. Brilliant!
What makes this photo so cool, even more so than the unabashedly cool model herself, is the fact that almost every person in the photo is staring at her.
I’m pretty sure the reason she’s being stared at was becuz she’s being photographed. But this doesn’t reduce how interesting the photo is, and how fascinatingly stunning the girl is.
Mr.Schuman, it’s great to see Istanbul here, and this is a great shot by the way…I feel the need to explain why people are staring at her, it’s not only because she is tall or beautiful or etc but she is also famous in turkey being a model and also a TV actress. After seeing Nil and Ece and now Ahu on my favorite blog I really feel even prouder to be a Turkish girl! I would love to see more shots from Turkey..
I think this photo shoot had two targets and wasnt just aiming to shoot a model and her style. This photo is aiming to catch our attention to the opposition between the model and her surroundings. Normally in another location nearby, Scott could have shot many many stylish young women where they wouldnt be seen as aliens :) there is a contrast in this photo and this is why it stands out and is soo cool !!!
Very nice indeed. See how people stare? It’s a characteristic of the Southern people. We look at each other without being offensive. We are interested in what happens next to us.
However this is not a simple case here, she is so stunning, anyone would look at her!
“… the idea of creating a two-way dialogue about the world of fashion and its relationship to daily life.”
This shot expresses exactly the opposite of what it claims to be. People look at her because she is so irrelevant and out of context. The fact that the people around her cant even afford her nailpolish clearly signifies the unavoidable social gap rather than the (pathetic) effort of a dialogue. (btw, what kind of nonsense is a two-way dialogue ?)
That confused looking dollface is not lost in the charming beauty of istanbul, she wants to get out of there as soon as possible because she knows she doesnt belong there.
Please , everyone, there is much more than mere aesthetics in visual arts, especially if it deals with public space.
It looks like that girl doesnt belong to this world, like she just jumped out from nowhere in the midle of the street. That is why this picture impresses me so much. Beautiful!
Congrats Scott, this is a very very nice shot because you saw the two opposite sides of not only Istanbul but also the whole country;the modern and the traditional..Hope you enjoyed it..
she’s a fashion icon in turkey.. and in besiktas you can’t see any stylish people like her so this is not occasional look from besiktas, if you look at other people’s eyes you can see that. If you want to see any stylish people from istanbul you should go to nisantasi, cihangir, galata, bagdat street, bebek… but not besiktas!
Is it the reactions of those around her? Is it that she is almost a foot taller than anyone near her? Is it the look of want in her face or the way she clutches her clutch?
It’s a stunning photo. Not so much because of the subject, although she is stunning as well, but because of the story one might find themselves telling because of it. I’d like to know her story…
Stunning! The attention to detail is amazing! The pants, the dark coat, the head scarf! And all of the elements melt together with the plastic bag! A visual master piece!
Yes she’s pretty and put together BUT They are staring because of her height. She’s either very very tall or the people all around her are very very short.
This picture works well because it captures her vulnerability. She’s obviously uncomfortable from all the scrutiny.
people are curious in istanbul. that’s why they look at her and wonder why she is being photographed. not because she looks so different from anybody else- as you can see that’s a very casual look.
Considering the numerous comments I guess I cannot say more…However I’ll try: This picture is really interrestig to me because not only she decided to be different than the rest (her clothes and style) but she’s tall and stands out from the crowd. She dares to be different and stands for it (in all senses!). I admire people who can stand out and be proud of it.
I’ll probably be more like a mouse trying to avoid their stares if I were in her position so a big BIG UP to her and to you!
She is one of the most beautiful models in Turkey and she is my friend.
Her name is AHU YAGTU. She has fantastic taste and beautiful mind. I must add that her mom is taller.
Greetings from Istanbul…
Ahmet Baytar
This street is so close to my house, can’t believe you were here :) You should check out Kadıköy’s streets. ‘Barlar sokağı’ area mostly. You can find very interesting people there.
The Virgin Mary, almost. The surrounding people are what make this photograph interesting. This woman seems to be at the centre of the universe; everything is revolving around her. the tights/socks/shoe combination is simply divine.
As an ex-pat who’s lived here in Istanbul for over 3 years, I can’t help thinking these particular ‘sartorialists’, or at least their outfits, have been planted. There is not a great deal of style here; it’s a developing country where new money heads straight to the high street to dress by numbers, and yet 3 girls of enough stylistic note to include on this highly reputed blog are found in a couple of days. The Besiktas girl is particularly suspect – note the attention she is attracting. Hopefully, I’m wrong.
This is by far one of the most beautiful images I have ever come across on this blog. Everything about this photo is stunning — the beautiful, statuesque woman, the bystanders looking at her as she towers over everyone on the sidewalk… Absolute perfection. Kudos!
Actually, she is a usual type from Istanbul. The way people stare at her is because some of our people can’t get adapted to change and they love to stare when there is something ( even its a basic photoshoot) interesting. They just love to stare. We have curious people. When you go to Besiktas, galata, bebek, etiler, levent, mecidiyekoy, kadikoy, beyoglu, taksim, moda, nisantasi, istinye, arnavutkoy you can feel like in europe, its just like rest of the europe but when you go other than these places you might not enjoy fashion, because there are so many different people from a variaty of ethnic, religious, lifestyle… I can tell you this for sure. Istanbul is the only city in europe deserves to be tagged as the only real capital in Europe. You would understand if you can only taste Istanbul.
Your best shot, yet. The relationships between herself and the people around her are as instantaneous and striking as the process of having taken the picture itself probably was. Great work!
simply wow! looks like red riding hood, with grandma and grandpa and the guy at the back looks like the wolf. And little girls like the one at the back is fascinated with the red riding hood. LOL. it’s just me. :)
Gorgeous picture. You have caught so much energy and emotion, and so many subtexts of interaction. Not only is this an amazing fashion shot, its an amazing photograph. A masterpiece.
People certainly do NOT stare like that at someone who is simply tall, or being photographed. If they were staring simply because she is being photographed, they would glance at Scott. Not stare at her like that. They are not just looking. They are staring with the most intense looks, some of awe, and some of disapproval, like the older lady to the left. I have never seen such intense looks on any of the other photo, even tho many are tall, and all are being photographed. Clearly this reaction is singular. And of obvious cultural significance. Her vulnerability makes this great. Bravo

Thanks.

Essence of Istanbul
December 5, 2011 at 9:29 pm
I remember getting this kind of looks around that area with my red boots, mini skirt in late 1980′s. It is not a promenade, it’s a very busy street, those people are probably in rush, trying to catch the next bus or a metro to home or work or whatever… In contrary, she is calm and she knows that she belongs to there and she doesn’t belong at the same time. If this was taken few blocks up to the NISANTASI area, we wouldn’t be discussing the composition, she would easily blend in her “style look alikes” That’s what I like most about this frame. Love it Scott, hope you too like Istanbul too. Best, N.

Extreme capitalism (as seen with this girl) or extreme Islam.

It’s amusing to see the difference between the lustful look of the man on the left and the sort of annoyed almost jealous stare of the woman on the right. It almost seems like they are a married couple separated by this glorious tall imposing beauty.

Mr.Schuman, it’s great to see Istanbul here, and this is a great shot by the way…I feel the need to explain why people are staring at her, it’s not only because she is tall or beautiful or etc but she is also famous in turkey being a model and also a TV actress.

This is magnificent. Her eyes. This photo doesn’t just capture the clothes but what made her wear them. Brilliant.

Great work!

Bravo
