what a great photograph – and I like what you said about expectations and experience – I feel like I could write a paper on this… anyway- have fun in Japan! It is one of my favorite places and I can't wait to see your pictures from there!
I have also lived in Russia and agree with the prior comment. This picture perfectly captures the nature of expactations within the two age groups. They may share the same city and even the same bus route, but their life experiences could not be any different, old Russian vs. new Russia. While the girl is anxious to get to her next destination, full of possibilities, not knowing what's ahead, the man has seen and lived it all. He knows where he needs to get to, now if the bus would get there quicker, he may be on his way.
BTW Scott, I recently bought your book, the hardcover version. Fashion and "real" people's own creativity insipres me daily, its like creating your own daily fairy tale, where you are Alice.
He looks like a fortress and she looks vulnerable. This photo cuts to heart of the matter in fashion — in general, men are dressed to look strong and women are dressed to look vulnerable, and when women are dressed to look strong, they are criticized for looking too masculine — I'm thinking of the comments posted when you juxtaposed the strong, narrow silhouettes of Celine, with the soft, full-skirted ones of Louis Vuitton. So here it is again, Louis Vuitton (left) vs. Celine (right), same principle, different manifestations.
I don't want to be rude or anything…but I think this picture wasn't shot in Moscow, but in Germany. First thing that came into my mind, when I saw the picture: the old man looks perfectly german (i don't know why.. his whole attidtude and expression…)! Second thing: The bus station. It's german (You can tell it by the signs printed on the glas.. it's a german company that does not produce in/for russia) :-)
So, sorry if i'm wrong, but i think the picture was shot in berlin :) it is great anyway!!!!
I absolutely LOVE this! I have often felt like I imagine the person on the left is feeling; head pointing up with hope, colourful clothes suggesting ambition. The person on the right I probably wouldnt judge fairly, as I cannot associate with him, but his body language (looking straight ahead, slumped down on the earth) suggest that he is stuck in his roots, clinging to the old ways of doing things, only interested in the here and now.
This photo has inspired me so much! Thank you!
PS. how do you manage to get a shot without them noticing?! PLEASE DO A POST ON CANDID PHOTOGRAPHY!! :)
There's so much one could take from this… they both have a look of resolution, but apart from this they seem to be on completely different paths.
Unsurprisingly, the old gentlemen seems to have a lot of certainty about him, and I think this gives him a kind of relaxation.
She on the other hand looks completely shielded. It's easy to assume that her life is faster and busier, probably more stressful.
I think it also marks a change in attitudes from one of community (his more relaxed openness) to individualism (shown by her behind a shield). She's not even looking at the camera . Does that mean we don't engage with each other anymore? To be honest she probably just didn't see in time, but you know what I mean.
