Nice dress, nice smile. Italian style all along. The man in the back also seems to have recognized Mr Schuman!

I love this dress! It kind of has the feel of a Chanel suit – but in a dress! ADR’s passion is always palpable in what she wears.

This is classic, but modern and sexy and fun. I love it.

p.s. Those shoes! A very nice play on nude shoes – they still go with everything but just have that extra oomph. Well done :)

  27. roelien

    July 12, 2012 at 9:47 am

a bit disconcerting, somehow, this little-girl-dress on a woman her age. still, she looks good. i suddenly realize she would look really great in jeans… something we’ll probably never get to see.

    July 12, 2012 at 9:47 am

Oh wow! What a cute dress! This is very understated for Anna Dello Russo! The faux pocket detail on the front of the dress is simply adorable.

I also like the black/leopard combo to the right, with the colourful bracelets. I’m going to try that ….

    July 12, 2012 at 10:01 am

Well, first off, as always a beautiful photo…setting, lighting, etc. However, although she has great legs, & is owning it, she’s a bit old for this short a dress…three to four more inches & it would’ve still been modern, yet more appropriate. this coming from someone who is probably her age & in-shape, too.

    There’s so much here:
Mlle. dello Russo rocking summer glamour.
The guy in shorts, Sartorialist star-struck.
The camera crew oblivious to all the action.
And the fleeting glimpse of the leopard-print woman
    breaking hearts on the blogosphere.

    July 12, 2012 at 10:34 am

I agree with roelien, she is a bit old to be wearing this style. Her hands, feet and face give her age away. The dress is cute but would look better on someone younger.

    • Linda

      July 30, 2012 at 10:08 pm

I think everything is right for her age and is in proportion, but her hairstyle lets down the look. Much shorter or an up-do would look much better on Anna, and would stave off the ‘want to be 20 again’ look.

  42. Helen

    July 12, 2012 at 10:46 am

    Too short. Does not fit.

  43. Lynn

    July 12, 2012 at 10:51 am

Love every element, but sorry, it would look more appropriate on someone 20 years younger, even though she’s got a rockin’ bod. And that fried/straightened hair (extensions?)? Healthy hair looks way better, even if it’s short. The whole thing just screams ‘trying too hard to deny my age’.

She’s such a visionary! I love how she uses fashion to challenge people’s stereotypes! She always look great because she OWNS her clothes, not the other way around! That’s what true style is all about!!! From my own personal fashion style, I think she looks fantastic and she is wearing my favorite pair of shoes :)

  62. Michelle S

wearing a kitten heel! i never thought i would see the day.

  63. steve

    July 12, 2012 at 12:43 pm

i’m just not feeling this look. the dress is too short and the shoes simply are not working although the lady in the tiger print skirt outfit rocks.

  64. Topol

    July 12, 2012 at 12:45 pm

Conservative for her. But still too young. What’s wrong with dressing well for your age, especially when you have the body for it?

  65. ANH Style

    July 12, 2012 at 12:52 pm

This is quite understated compared to what she’s usually seen wearing- I think she looks great. The gold details are a nice touch.

  66. Eric

    July 12, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I also love the gold accents – bracelet, shoes, purse.

  67. Tracey

    July 12, 2012 at 1:04 pm

An understated ADR ?, now that is shocking!

  68. Niia

    July 12, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Yes, she’s an icon and the Chanel-esque dress is adorable with the well-chosen accessories. But I do think that past a certain age, there are two things that women should not be wearing: tiny bikinis and mini dresses with bare legs. I honestly don’t think these things every look good on older women — even if they have fabulous bodies. There are so many other sexy looks that would be perfect on her and she often wears them. Just think the dress is way too short.

  69. CJ

    July 12, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Wow she is actually dressed “normal”, by her standards anyways.

  70. LT

    July 12, 2012 at 1:08 pm

I agree with roelien and Lynn. Lovely outfit, but inappropriate for a woman of her age. A woman of true style knows how to dress in an age-appropriate manner without looking dull or dowdy.

  79. racheldreadful

    July 12, 2012 at 2:22 pm

the look as a whole is not that inspiring.
the hair is my main problem…too tortured into straightness and if those
are not hair extensions..then a severe trim is in order.
wavy hair or tied back hair would be better.

    July 12, 2012 at 2:44 pm

I don’t think the handle looks very feminine. Her dress is very Chanel. Her shoes are beautiful. A rounded metallic toe cap instead of the usual pointy version. Nice twist on a trend. Wallace

nice look :) Hugs from Latvia

  88. Alicia

    July 12, 2012 at 3:04 pm

I agree with Lynn, trying to too hard to deny her age…and don’t like the poker straight hair, it’s tired.

  89. Sarah

    July 12, 2012 at 3:04 pm

She needs to get a good haircut and give up the long, casual, stringy hair look. Proportions all wrong: dress too short and with fussy, formal details. Shoes belong with a different dress. Odd that somebody with her fashion resources and wonderful figure looks so disjointed.

  95. une chatte grise

The guy in the background is just precious!
Re: the age debate–I think there’s a difference between wearing looks associated with youth and trying desperately to look young. Kim Gordon & Joan Jett, for example, tend to look great because they’re not trying to appear young–they’re just dressing as who they are (ie grown folks who are rockers). Ms. dello Russo, on the other hand, always seems to be desperately trying to be something–young, “zany,” the center of attention, what have you.

I love that Anna loves fashions so much, but this is less good, too little girl for someone so more is more. I also always wish that her posture was as good as her figure-her head always pokes forward.

  106. nora

    July 12, 2012 at 6:10 pm

I think she looks like a million bucks. All the accessories are spot-on, including the bare legs. Something about her age adds to the look. I don’t think a younger woman could pull this off as well. Hair tied back in a ponytail would have looked nice too.

  109. Stephanie

    July 12, 2012 at 7:33 pm

OK, I’m over 40 and I feel young myself, so am not saying that a woman her age shouldn’t wear short dresses, etc. etc. What really bothers me though as a woman who is trying to figure out the aging thing is that this sort of a look is so common on older women in upper income groups in western countries – the bleached and straightened hair, uber tan, makeup, skimpy clothing, etc., etc. – and some people seem to be convinced that THIS is empowerment. I guess what really bothers me is that we get excited about sexy-looking men looking their age, but so few older women actually try to do it. I just think that working WITH older features instead of trying to distract from them is so much cooler and sexier than this.

  110. Darrell

    July 12, 2012 at 7:57 pm

The only thing not fair or just or proper is that there are only 24 hours in a day to contemplate every aspect of her beauty.

  111. Monsieur Marcel

    July 12, 2012 at 8:00 pm

@une chatte grise, finally! Something we disagree on…Though your choice of examples is, well, exemplary; the debate centers on age appropriate style. I’m on the side which says it’s the individual’s decision, lest I irritate Princess Glee.

i notice it is other women having a go about her age and the appropriateness of the outfit her fried hair, skin tone etc. she looks cute and happy. women never need to be repressed by men ’cause we do a bang up job on each other!

  124. Christine Scott

    July 13, 2012 at 5:55 am

Oh no…I even like my own aged look more than her look today! The style, fit, length and hair go over that line of just making it work to being just embarrassing!

But a big sigh of relief for her sensible, walkable and very sexy growed-up pair of shoes.

…like this pick ´cause i see HER (so pretty and fresh) not hidden behind her…bold “look”!

  129. Steph

    July 13, 2012 at 9:14 am

About the age appropriateness matter, the way i see her is she wears what she wears because she loves that particular piece/style and sees no reason to deny herself of it even if it’s clothing targeted for younger women. Not because she’s trying really hard to deny her age (although then again maybe it is, I don’t know her mind.) But i just think it’s because she loves fashion and doesn’t want to restrict herself to only age appropriate attire.

She has a fabulous body and I would want to know her work out regimen and diet! I am 44 years my self, and I think she looks great, BUT this dress would look better on a girl 19 year old. You can wear short dresses at 50 if you have nice skinny legs, BUT not this short. I don’t like her hair either, I would tie it up or cut it shoulder lenght. Even Jennifer Aniston starts to be “too old” for the Jennifer Aniston look. I don’t know, maybe italian women dress like this at this age and in the upper class, but not in the Northern countries of Europe! Here women at 50 dresses properly for their age. Except those who does not “dress at all” :D Long hair is beautiful only if its really healthy, and on a young person. Lets say under 35! Otherwise it easily gets trampy.

Une chatte grisee, I totally agree with you! Patti Smith is over 60 I guess, and she still looks fabulous, cos she looks like her self and not trying to look young! There just is something really tasteless in older ladies in short skirts. Maybe cos I see a short skirt as GIRLY, not SEXY ( Carine R in her skirt-suits is sexy ) but girly is not sexy, in this skirt on ADR is girly, and you don’t want to be girly as 50, you want to be fabulous and sexy. I am 44, and my heydays of wearing a short skirt ended like 18 years ago. Now I just try to look like me and enjoy. Every age have its period in dressing. I still wear converses though :)

No one is ageless or timeless, especially when you dress inappropriately for your actual age. This too short, too young dress makes her look older than she probably is. I’ve seen posts of this same woman is age appropriate attire , and she looks younger for it.

I don’t think it’s an age thing, it’s the ballance of her long hair, short dress, long legs, clunky bag that somehow makes her look out of propotion and like a woman in a childs dress, which is a shame, because she is obviously very beautiful. The woman behind her is not dissimilar in shape and skirt length, yet looks so much more in proportion.

  140. Perfect proportion! Perfect legs.

    July 13, 2012 at 1:18 pm

Fabulous! I love her outfit. Its crisp, pretty, and perfect for her body type. I love her for showing us that we don’t have to hide out knees, elbows or anything else as we get a little older. Big deal if there is a wrinkle on the knee! What of it? Its still a lovely leg.
The nude shoes make her legs look even longer, and how can anyone call those shoes clunky? thats insane. they are completely sleek. Short dress and long hair are also always good together. people are just too brainwashed by some morons like Tim Gunn, or whatever the little nerdy guy in glasses is named. There is no reason to hide a beautiful body just for a few little winkle!!!!!!

Her body is wonderful. It looks better on her then on a 19 year old. Its far more appropriate that a grown woman show her beautiful self then a little girl. People have it all backwards. I approve. It all goes together exquisitely.

What is age-appropriate attire? Wearing what looks good on you? I see a lithe woman with sinewy legs. Brava. Good for her.

@ Monsieur M, with whom it is indeed odd to disagree–I guess my central thought is that I don’t think there’s any particular age-appropriate (or inappropriate) style per se; it’s not about the skirt, it’s about the wearer. For me, style hinges upon what a particular look conveys about the wearer’s view of him- or herself. Ms Jett, Ms Gordon, and Ms Smith all wear rocker clothes that some might call age-inappropriately youthful, but they never look like they’re trying to deny their age or hang onto a dominant-cultural ideal of “femininity.” They’re just expressing a part of themselves within the context of who they now are. As Stephanie notes, however, Ms della Russo et al seem to be denying and fighting themselves–they seem to be trying to contrive a self, not be a self.
That said, let me note that I’m not putting myself in the role of Supreme Fashion Deity and “approving” or “disapproving.” I’m just a woman in her 40s who many would consider “age-inappropriate” in any number of ways and is trying to negotiate these waters thoughtfully & with some semblance of grace.

I have a question, How does Anna dello Russo feel in this outfit? From her expression I read, young, happy, and cute! Hallelujah! It seems to me this outfit sends her back to a time when this would be something she would suit, and she doesn’t give a *hit what ya’ll think because what she feels is way more real.

I am young, but I can’t help admire the self possession and grace that older women and more maturely dressed women inherently posses, which is something that short skirts and long straight hair just don’t encapsulate. That is to say I don’t think saying that “dress your age” should be considered a negative suggestion. I think this outfit is really lovely, but it really emphasizes her age and that detracts from what shes actually wearing. While its fun to show off your legs or your arms, as usual Anna Del Russo just seems to take it too far. If she had worn some tights, or a jacket, not only would she look much more beautiful, but you could appreciate the clothes much more as well.

Age and attitude are just little prisons you build in your own little minds.
She is the same 20-something stunner that could make you forget your name and take away your breath: A worldwind of energy with a joy for living. Nothing has changed. She is Twiggy just making a name for herself Carnaby Street and Kings Road. Can’t you see it? Too bad. She dresses to make herself happy and makes a heck of a lot of other people smile and share in the joy in the process. Stick with your silly rules and self-imposed limitations. We aren’t looking at you or listening to you anyway. You suck the air out of the world, out of life. Thank God for Anna!

I understand that Anna dello Russo is the bloggers icon of the moment. …but I now feel that she is being over used by everyone who has an access to photograph her. We all know that she has great sense of Fashion …but getting a little tired of seeing her pictures everywhere….

I know ADR hardly ever wear trousers but I started to fantasize about this outfit and how it would look great. Skinny short jeans with high heels, and a jacket, would make this rock, and the hair tied up in a fancy chignon, OR with black really wide trousers and flat sandals, that would do it too. And leave the hand bag, and have her hair trimmed, its not “The longer the better” Long hair should be groomed and healthy.

I think the problem is not the age of anna, and yes, the aged appearance of it, because if she could have a youthful appearance, as well as model Elle Macpherson who is 50 years old, so she would wear such clothes. That is, if the person is still young so why not use short clothes? I see many girls look older, I’m talking face, body, skin and mind, they should dress like the same old, but then, there are many jealous people, who speak just of the old age…
