OK, we know that Alessandro Squarzi loves white pants, often with a jacket or sportcoat worn over them, but I think this is the first time we’ve seen him wear a suit’s coat and vest over the white pants. The suit coat is notable for its being a DB with an unflapped or besom ticket pocket on the LEFT side over patch pockets, heavy pick stitch, spalla camicia, and surgeon’s cuffs. But I think what is even more defining — and harder to pull off, unless you are (southern) Italian — is to carry such a jacket or suit coat over one shoulder while walking, smoking, talking with one’s hands, etc. There is the classic Euro pose — the jacket worn as a cape over both shoulders — while directing a film, making the passeggiata, etc. But just try it this way, over one shoulder, and see if your jacket or coat doesn’t end up in the dust at your feet. Hussars used to wear their dolmans in this manner, but they kept them attached to the rest of their uniform by buttons, frogs, or cords. There is so much of a history of studied masculine nonchalance in this gesture. Imagine Mr. Squarzi with a cavalry saber in scabbard, wearing a sabretache and shako or czapka, and you have the full conceit….Or maybe these images will make my point:

Why are those sunglasses so tiny?

Why do sunglasses have to be big?

They do look well proportioned for his face.

It’s too much! To me this doesn’t look laid back but thought trough.

I know; all I see is the effort, sometimes it’s exhausting to look at.

Funny. I could look at him all day long. ;) But of course I don’t know who he is at all, just a handsome, well dressed man, but to me he looks very comfortable in his clothing. He isn’t overdressed. No kooky pants sagging, or excess jewelry. Just the opposite. Well fitting, simple pieces that are in shades to all work together seamlessly. I have no idea what you could mean by too thought out, or even why you think giving thought to an outfit is somehow bad. Very confusing.

All those grown up – and even mature…- guys you photograph in the streets look so much better than those 14-year old looking models in the shows…
I really don’t understand this need to feature only (not very healthy looking) adolescents on these shows. I don’t even buy the excuse that clothes “fall” better on them. They just look anemic and not very alive. Thanks for often showing “real men” as well!

    Luv the pic.
I get nausea with all those cigarette pictures. I’m italian and the first to admit it, too many smokers and suntans that were fashionable in the 1970′s.

I am a street style photographer and I would insist that Alessandro Squarzi is the person who has very natural sense of fashion. He also has strong identity of white trousers and indigoe fabric, sometimes he show up casually how to wear military vintage look even elegantly. He is the icon of not only pitti but also in the world. Always keep an eye on him.
