this is easily one of my favorite photographs—the perfect frame that lights form around her face, the contrast of her boots and the copper colored dirt and the freshness of her eyes all contribute to a picture reminiscent of the Twilight Zone in its perfect surrealism a definitely happy new year!!!
LOVE IT!!! comfortable yet sexy. If most people wore that outfit they would look awful.. but she looks warm comfortable, stylish and really rock and roll! Love the belt detail, and her hair! Girl crush! http://stylespotterfashionblogger.blogspot.com
When boots/shoes are worn for a long time its easy to see if its new or been worn into. These boots have a sense of old age but yet it also looks so new (because ripped, dirty are pretty popular with leather)
Yesterday I went to see a film about a working artist I like very much. In the film he said when he was in art school the style was not to make something beautiful but ugly. He didn't agree. Here you go. I know some folks are going to make this out to be intriguing but I just think it's unattractive. And I own some of the artist's work so I put my money where my heart is.
love the colors and textures, but i feel this outfit doesn't do this woman justice. wish i could see more of her face or figure, she seems fascinating.
This is such an inspiring style photo! I like to see images like this that offer different definitions of femininity.
She's reminiscent of Kate Beckinsale in the movie "Underworld," but with a lot more bite. Kinda like the love child of Patti Smith and Kate Beckinsale. I love it.
These elements — from the messy hair to the scuffed boots — are really hard to pull off without looking sloppy, outdated or flat out butch. And yet this lovely woman has managed to make it work wonderfully. I'll definitely be studying this for clues on how to recreate the magic happening here.
I disagree with the comment above that this is about her pretty face. While individual presence always plays a role in successful style, if you cover her face this look still works. (That's a little trick I often use to determine if I'm reacting to the model or the outfit: place your thumb over the face, then judge.)
Question for The Sartorialist: the jacket looks like it has a metallic blue finish, which is making me go gahhhh! Is that just a coincidence of the lighting?
Great composition–love the background! She reminds me of the Kate Beckinsdale character in Underworld. Nice to see new posts on your blog–looking forward to more wonderful photos in 2010
GAH!! This is my girl crush!! Ive seen her around the lower east and east village a few times and always end up "stalking" her until I feel creepy! hahaha– amazing style and gorgeous girl.. sigh….
Ohmigod…now *that* is fierce. So hot. What a fantastic way to kick off the new year/decade! Beautiful shot–the lights framing her face are tremendous. And she is…my goodness…the stuff of my fantasies. Thanks Sart!
It's not so much what she's wearing, but the wonderful background that fits her perfectly. I cannot imagine this look with a field of flowers in the back. Great eye, Sart!
i love it. i love her boots, i love the (as i choose to call it) sinner-hair, and the fact that she went through the trouble of keeping the buckle on her belt exposed despite the heavy jacket!
It's so expensive to live in NY. Is this a trust fund baby? Or some kind of band roadie. Probably both. I'm just trying to figure out how people who do the "homeless chic" look pay their bills in NY.
I am mostly struck by the fact that this is so POLARLY different than your last post, with the old photos – just goes to show the broadness of true style and the Sart's ability to capture it! But, secondly, I'm impressed by the photo even more than I like her look (although I do) – the tunnel setting was a great choice, especially with the hair and kinda crazy-eyes vibe.
Today on the subway in Boston, I saw a young woman who was wearing something completely different yet similar: the dark blues, the line–not tight and skinny, but big and wide! I thought her look was completely new and a harbinger of what's to come!
At first glance I thought it was a young man and I didn't like the look at all. At second glance she became a very hot young woman, with a very pulled together look.
she's emmanuelle alt, yes? or just a lookalike? ok, whoever she is, she's such an amazing woman with great style. everything she wore had always got me stunned. the beat up boots are awesome and the grunge feel of her look is simply wow-tastic!
this image is spectacle, spectacular. space is my canvas and this is what i strive for when creating spaces; beauty, edge, strength, synthesis. i am in love with this woman.
She looks a bit like Emmanuelle Alt, but this lady is much younger. My first thought was "lovely & so Grunge" which Is a style I really love. Its all about the combination and getting stuff that do not work on paper, but then in real life, really DO work!
She looks a bit oveer done though, in my opinion, like trying too hard. Her hair is great, but a loose ponytail would fit the outfit better, I don't know really, but there is just something with that outfit that doesn't work. Maybe the shoes should be authentic Dr Martens.. Then I might believe her :)
I agree the lighting is lovely. But I bought those pants in Iowa City, Iowa in 1989 and everyone laughed. Love the recycled boots, brilliant. Wish blue were my color…
can some one please figure out who this woman is?? i live in the bowery and catch glimpses catch glimpes of her looking totally amazing. totally curious!
there is more than one thing to admire, but i get the sense you time-traveled to find this image. just after world war three and the u.s.'s collapse. it's amazing the electricity still works.
This is a good example of an outfit that your mother would never tell you to wear. But it all comes off beautifully here. The colors are great, the textures are interesting, and the girl totally "inhabits" the look and she makes it really work for her. She gives you the feeling that you're in her world now, so you might as well get used to it. I love this. It's creative, well-realized, and tough enough to be especially interesting on a girl.
oh gosh no. A total mess imo. Would've been great if it was towned down even by just a little bit. The items seperately are nice but this is just too much.
Best photo ever? Did any of you go to college in the 1990's? She looks like an ex-cheerleader that's just discovered lesbian chic "tough" and is trying, very trying to let all know. Ah, the contrived combat of the coffee shop!
Great outfit, I would wear it and I am a guy. My problem is the lost of femininity. I feel the only thing making this outfit over the top is that there is a attractive woman popping out of it. Maybe that is enough, I don't know. To heavy or masculine needs more of her.
As we say in Scotland " I would'nae mess," but really where is she going dressed like that. I want to go too. I,m all for a little distressed somewhere in an outfit. This girls too young to worry about gloss.
This is androgyny at it's finest – I'd believe it if I was told this was a guy OR a girl but not in insulting manner. This is bashing stereotypes of gender over the head – really interesting
I totally agree with the person who said this outfit looks like it's from a movie – she could have walked straight out of 'Terminator: Salvation', or an editorial about ultra-masculine dressing! For such a grungy outfit, it seems strangely almost over-styled. I think because everything about it is SO masculine (materials, fit, etc) it might almost be… too much? I mean it's so typical of one specific style, and so artfully messy and ill-fitting (in just the right way) that it seems like she's trying really hard.
I don't get it. She's my neighbor and she wears the same ensemble everyday… no imagination, no variety, and frankly no style… it's just the same old monotonous black crap. I'm expecting to see this look at The Gap next season, pseudo badass!
I like that she TRIED to be edgy. It takes discipline and guts to have theme and style everyday. I admire that. She reminded me very much of a heroine from French film 'La Femme Nikita'. I love the raw, physicality and strength she exudes. City version of Amazone warrior. What a refreshing look ; I was tired of carefully coordinated chic and this was a great visual game changer. Tks!
She carries this one of with her confidence i think. Personally when i see the outfit overall i feel abit "erm…maybe not" But at the same time i love it because it seems like she woke up and said "Heck today i wanna dress like a pirate/Chrissie Hynde" And she does it! Great :)
not convinced by this myself. She has a very LA, 'costume department-from-a-vampire-series' type feel…the look in her face is too conventionally pretty/unimaginative/self-conscious. Shes not real grunge. Real punk and grunge is an attitude and the outfit a bi-product of this; whereas this outfit is just the surface look.
Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks, anti keylogger
It is rather strange to read such remarks- I was informed that "she" was on the site- a "she" whom is a dear friend- truthful, honest, and one of the most sincere individuals I have ever met. HOW ONE "CLOTHES" ONESELF IS HOW ONE PROTECTS ONESELF – and with a HEART as hers- i understand the "outward display". It is that which is on the INSIDE– dispose of physical judgments and really SEE!

The composition of this photograph is just perfection!!! She is also an amazing subject – so cool and yet so disheveled. Beautiful x

i like all the pieces, (especially the boots) and her beautiful face, but the whole effect looks lumpy.

Great outfit, I would wear it and I am a guy. My problem is the lost of femininity. I feel the only thing making this outfit over the top is that there is a attractive woman popping out of it. Maybe that is enough, I don't know. To heavy or masculine needs more of her.

Nice shot. If she were under 18, it would be funky. But she's just too old to be trying this hard to be edgy.

Attitude does not necessarily equal style. Whether she projects charisma or not, her clothing is just awful. POLISH YOUR BOOTS, I say!

The good thing: she usually have cool boots ;)

Great :)

way too contrived. Like a costume not an outfit.

January 8, 2010 at 9:27 am
not convinced by this myself.
