Though it could be argued that whenever a camera (or a well-known photographer) enters the picture, it changes things. You may attract those rare people who wear make-up in the pool. Or she may have decided to wear make-up and jewelry because she knew it would make for a great photo.
I know plenty of people who wear make up to the beach. And plenty of pools where people generally just chill, and dress up, and don’t do much more then splash around. Seriously, its not like he went to the YMCA, and a woman in make up got in the pool, and started to do laps of the crawl while wearing make up and jewelry. Its a bunch of people getting together at the pool to socialize. get over it.
I am sorry to intervene, but I really think this reply was unnecessarily harsh. I, for, once, think that Rocky Mantle might have thought that you were hanging somewhere fancy (with friends), where maybe a photo shoot was taking place… Just a thought.
Great shot! I love this picture- it really sums up how to look gorgeous whilst being happy in summer. Not a fan of the necklace when swimming, but it is a beautiful piece. The whole pic seems to be bathed in gold :) <3
Gorgeous shot, but there’s no way in hell I would ever wear makeup or jewelry to the pool/ beach! No matter how effortless any woman makes it look, makeup takes time and attention to maintain. No lipstick in the world can withstand a swim, snorkle, and 30 minutes of smacking around a volleyball. The male equivalent is a guy covered in suntan oil. That deep golden brown looks nice, but he doesn’t seem like much fun at the beach ;)
I don’t like those jewels, just a question of personal taste. But I am sure the make up is not a “made up” thing for the photograph. A lot of women in France do wear make up at the pool, even when swimming many laps! I do (it has to be waterproof of course…)
I think it’s ok to wear make up whenever you like it, even when it may seem inappropriate to some.
I am running long distance races and a friend of mine, who will turn 60 very soon, is a very serious runner, and she ALWAYS wear make up and bright red lipstick, even on a night race, even on a mountain race lasting for hours, sometimes days. I think she just looks beautiful, even if she is not a “classical beauty”. And besides that, she runs very fast, often ending on the “box” at the finish line!
I love a good dive, and you could not possibly do it wearing jewellry. Nor could I swim any length comfortably dragging chains with me. And imagine if sand got in between you and the necklace. I, myself, prefer a more natural life.
But fine for a glamorous dip in the pool to cool off.
To be fair if you look at her properly makeup wise she is actually just wearing bright lipstick. I go to the Liguria and the women look really glamorous on the beach there too and a lot wear makeup and jewellery. I guess it depends on the place and whether or not it is the norm there.
This is one of my favourite shots from you Scott. I can imagine a thousand scenarios when I look at this picture. It takes me places. It makes my mind travel. And for this, I tip my imaginary hat to you, monsieur le photographe.
Oh no, beautiful colours to look at, oh no, a photograph that reminds us of warmth and Summer memories, oh no, retro jewellery that inspires, oh no, someone playing dress ups or not and being able to do it in water to let us fantasise or inspire us to play around more… Oh no we couldn’t possibly just enjoy these could we…
Oh no! Beautiful colours that we enjoy looking at.
Oh no! Retro jewellery that inspires us.
Oh no! Scenery, that reminds us of warmth and amazing Summers.
Oh my gosh!! People dressing up and feeling fabulous poolside.
Oh no!! People creating glamorous moments not everyone gets to see enough off these days
Oh no… we couldn’t possibly just sit back and enjoy the boldness of this photo, seriously just enjoy, flick through Poolside with Slim Aarons and try not enjoy the glamour, make up or no make up, jewellery or no jewellery, So much more fun to see boldness even if its not your thing
Yes, she looks very beautiful. But while reading your comment I could not help thinking that if you put next to her a natural beauty, with no make up, no accessories, she would definitely overshadow her. All that glisters is not gold, and a flower will always look more inviting and charming than a golden necklace.
