Bill is The Man. While watching the documentary about him (Bill Cunningham New York), my heart just melted all over the floor. I would so love to meet this man.
I love the fact that he wears that classic utilitarian jacket over and over again, while he searches for an individual’s self-expression through clothes on the street. It says a lot about him. Long live Bill Cunningham!
What i really like in this photo is the smile that it is so characteristic from him. he looks like an happy child doing him passion like it is was the first time over and over again. i feel the same when doing my work. you did capt it so well in the right moment.
Yes, yes, yes! Unpretentious, always following his passion, beautiful (outside and in). This is what LOVE looks like! Thank you Scott, for so perfectly capturing the worlds’ precious Bill, and his childlike joy while in the midst of it all! This is what sheer JOY looks like at any age. Absolute un-self consious bliss!
Ralph Lauren is famous for buying a waiters perfect jacket off the waiters back while dining, say, in Italy, to tear apart and reinvent for his line. I wonder if he hasn’t begged Bill to copy his ‘Blue Bill” jacket….and named it just that!
We shall see.
Scott, you must be as thrilled as we are with this delightful shot.
“Thank you Scott, for so perfectly capturing the worlds’ precious Bill, and his childlike joy while in the midst of it all! This is what sheer JOY looks like at any age. Absolute un-self consious bliss!”
just saw documentary about him last night, so I can answer the Q that yes, he still uses film (or did when documentary was made). What an interesting man — lives like a monk, to feed what Mr. Schuman has termed ‘visual greed’. And it seems to feed him right back.
I heart Bill Cunningham! The original Sartorialist! Such a wonderful attitude and personality. I loved the documentary about him. He’s always lived his life on his terms and is still going strong, good for him!
Perfect shot of him! So sweet and heartwarming. I think we all fell in love with him a little more with that documentary, and now every image of him is just that much sweeter.
It is like he was caught by surprise, but it come out real well. Was he a photographer? and if yes that is brilliant making good use of his talent even in his old years.

There is alot to be said for the uniform style that Mr. Cunningham chooses. I recall how perry ellis used to wear only a white button down and khakis….his closet full of them. he always looked good. same for Mr. C: pared down simplicity, zen style. somewhat of a poke in the eye to the fashion obsessed.
One of my prized possessions is a 1985 NY Times “STYLE” page that Mr. Cunningham photographed. It has a photo of a Kansai Yamamoto outfit that I had designed the graphics for when I was working and living in Tokyo.

In the above picture he’s using a Nikon with a guide mode (the green setting on the wheel), so a D3100 or D3200, both good, cheap entry-level DSLR’s.
The lens is a little thing, tempted to say the 35mm, but they scale up on those bodies, so maybe something smaller with only manual focus.
