I’ve spent the past few days visiting small towns and taking backroads for as much of the drive as possible, on my way back up to Milan.
I’m always tempted to take the main highways but driving this way through Italy is so romantic and beautiful (even if it takes double the time!)

we did the same: 15 days from milano to roma, with a cinque cento. we went everywhere, ate the best food, swam in the sea in portofino and had aperitivo at sunset! :)

It may take you more time by choosing the long route, but that time is spent wisely: in my opinion, there is no better way to become familiar with an area and its people and ultimately appreciate it. The shops you see that don’t belong to a brand-name franchise, grocery stores that aren’t supermarkets with 40 checkouts, trattorias that are not impersonal Autogrills with crowded parking lots….. Take the long way, Scott, to wherever your heart desires, and you’ll be a happier person.

Yes, it is right to give the necessary time to really see some things, particularly this very beautiful country that deserves to be absorbed. The rewards are in evidence here!
