The Marc by Marc Jacobs SS2013 collection is a masterclass in the mixing of colors and patterns. Â Hopefully these clothes will be bought by customers and studied by fashion design students and aspiring stylists.Â

Monsieur Marcel

I dare say he’s taken some cues from the street fashions on The Sartorialist.

I agree with Monsieur Marcel, I feel like he has borrowed from your look book. This for me is not a about great collection, it is about good styling, but sth that every one of the people from your photos does better and often at a lesser cost (with vintage and top street items) and with more oomph.
So, there you go, I think he should dedicate the collection to the stylish people from the street and to you for making a record of these people. Nice legacy, Mr Sart.

But do we need a big decider to tell us how we should dress ourselves. I could do it just as well by mix and match, coupled with stylish blogs, for instance, the satorialist and the likes!

Lovely! These clothes look like a bit of a departure for Marc. The clear but relaxed lines, color pallettes, and patterns all seem to point subtlely to the American South. Maybe I’m reading a bit too much into it, but women in my little Georgia town have been wearing basically this same collection for years!

Getting a kind of Dutch country-side kind of vibe from it. The shoes especially, very much like clogs.
It’s warm and familiar, but also like a funky rebellion.

Agreed!
Kinda like the D&G collection a few seasons ago?
I also love the bags in this collection… similar shapes to the Louis Vuitton classics.

Okay, most of the time you can find at least something good about a designer’s collection, but this is absolute awesomeness – and with skulls too. I love everything. Lets just point the runway to my house and waltz every piece straight into my closet.

That kind of seems to be the general consensus! What do you think it is about this Marc show that’s so appealing across the board?
Jina
September 11, 2012 at 9:15 pm
For me personally, this collection is appealing across the board as you say, because it’s approachable and looks effortlessly put together – yet not boring! I love the last three looks, and can definitely see myself wearing them.
Classic, clean lines with those outrageous patterns make for an interesting combination of prints/silhouette as well.

What seems to be appealing, at least to me, is the accessible-ness of it. Each piece looks comfy, pretty, and wearable on its own, but the complete looks is beautiful but accessible, too. Anyone looking at this will see one or two things that they already have that they can wear in a new way to be similar to this collection. Marc Jacobs seems to really understand women and seems to love to dress them. I, too, love everything I have seen. I’ll have to look up the complete collection ASAP.

For me, these looks are appealing because there’s a retro girlishness about them that’s balanced by a rugged vibe. There’s nothing precious or cloyingly “feminine” about them, but they’re playful and even flirtatious. And they’re lovely and complex (look at all those patterns) but still seem eminently wearable and unfussy!

They’re appealling because they are already on store shelves at places such as Urban Outfitters. They look comfortable and familiar.

Pattern on pattern on pattern. I like it. It’s a lot to take in. The piling on of prints and patterns make the looks very casual. It seems like a happy, comfortable, casual collection.

The prints, colors and their combinations are literally mind-blowing! This collection is both down-to-earth and simple in terms of cuts and tailoring, but filled with an explosive mix of tones, patterns, and intricate graphics. The shoes are also quite refreshing. These are clothes I would definitely wear on the streets. Bravo!

I just find all of these pieces very unflattering for a woman. Not my aesthetic. I can’t see that a man would find these appealing at all. Although, the colors are nice.

That’s what I think is so lovable about this collection! The styling feels right to walk off the runway and right down the street on almost any girl. It feels livable, right?

Exactly! It’s so rare I can identify with a runway collection, but I really love this one. I mean the first look is too many layers for my taste and the last look too few, but overall, it’s so great.

The handkerchief dress as haute couture…hmm. Nuances of Russian peasant style and Malawi island chic. I don’t think it would fly down Wall Street, New York. However the fabric blend might be upscaled with paisley silks and sateens, versus the cotton prints seen here. And these dresses could be de-accessorized. Lose the bowling ball bags and shoppers, lose the curler-hiding head wraps and winter socks, and the dresses themselves would stand out as the cute summer dresses they are!

Marc by Marc isn’t about Wall Street, it’s Brooklyn or East Village… Anywhere people are willing to be out of the box and bohemian. I’d bet money on these clothes flying out of the shops next year, they are so wearable without being tame!

I don’t know much about designers but this collection “talks” to me and I can see myself picking a skirt or pants and wear it with a different top and vice versa, As for the head gear wraps and the socks in sandals they look new with these bright colors and patterns. Feminine but not girlie.

Seems patchwork is in. It’s definitely in Marc by Marc Jacobs and in Proenza Schoeler’s collections.
In Jacobs’, the clothes look soft and comfortable, and perhaps inexpensive. I’m not sure why anyone should pay designer prices for “street aesthetic” although I don’t see any hipsters wearing patchwork.
On the other hand, in P&S, they look expensive but stiff, sharp, and possibly painful to wear.
Patchwork is tough to pull off. I’m waiting for other collections, and photos, to convince me.

Brilliant work – I’m in fits of envy for those able to purchase these gems. But the models? Are we back to this? These beautiful women and the examples they set are extraordinarily unhealthy. I wish I could look at these inspired pieces without feeling so sad.
