Making of The Sartorialist for Kiehl’s Dopp Kit

Kiehl’s and I had been wanting to work together for a while, but could not figure out the right format; then, they commissioned me to createa dopp kit for their upcoming Father’s Day promotions and it fell right into place.

I loved the challenge of designing a product from scratch and they were keen to let me have it produced in Italy by my good friend, Luca Roda. The deal was cemented when Kiehl’s agreed to promote the project with a shoot celebrating the special relationship a Dad has with his kids (you’ll see some of those images in a post tomorrow).

During the project I took a few photos at critical moments in the design process. The photo above is literally the moment I got the inspiration for how I wanted the dopp kit to look. (It pays to always have a camera with you!)

This is wonderful, so nice to see a change too, if you don't mind me saying. Your blog is perfect, but it's nice in any event to see something different.

That must have been awesome to work on. I agree with the first commentor, Becky May, in that it really IS refreshing to see something different every once in a while. Congrats on the dopp kit! I'll make sure to keep my eye out for it as a father's day present/bf bday present!

looks lovely! I know women's cosmetic bags often have the zipper lowered a half inch or so from the top. I had never thought about why that is. I imagine that band of fabric attached to the lid also helps it keep its shape when opened and full of products. Interesting insights into the process.

Can you show us a picture of the final product? Also, from where did the name "dopp" kit originate? I have never understood that name.

I have a bag this shape i bought at Bendels I have it for year's the only flaw is the storage on the inside lid Just a piece of plastic.
what ever I put in bandaids etc they always fall out, but i don't think the adverage guy cares.

@ Meredith Howard: Charles Doppelt created a toiletry case in 1919 that became know as the "dopp kit."

Nice post Scott, I love seeing design processes and hearing how they develop.

I like Garance's cardigans and what a great watch! I just bought Elle yesterday with her illustrated top in it, you are clearly a talented pair!

the rolex on the picture has a date cyclops, so i'd rather say it is a datejust with a domed bezel and an oyster bracelet. nice, understated and timeless piece.

i noticed it's already out of stock on the kiehl's online store. have my set reserved at one of the stores in Kuala Lumpur. Going to pick it up soon – it's replacing another Kiehl's toiletry bag that I already have. Love the size and love the compartments inside. :D

thanks so much for the great collaboration and the wonderful design!

Dear Scott, my husband and I are in Paris on a holiday and I've just bought one for my him as a present. He has just opened it and he has found it great. The products are exactly those he actually uses and the dopp kit is really well made and full of useful pockets. The position of the zipper is in fact the cleverest. Anyway, I personally think the most stylish thing is something you didn't mention in your post – the double "k" zipper instead of a common one. Style is in details, isn't it…
