When sheer is well-executed, it is visually compelling. It’s so interesting to watch how the body moves inside the clothes as opposed to how the body looks jutting out of the clothes. It’s almost like a window through which the wearer allows you to view something typically hidden; its erotic appeal is undeniable.
In this photo I love the long, sloping curve of her torso. It creates a graceful line that carries the eye through the image.

I adore sheer, especially when it is artfully placed within a garment, it can create very interesting optical illusions, as well as, as you said, highlighting the most poetic and elegant parts of the human body.

It is true that that sloping line of her torso beneath the sheer blouse is so beautiful, I absolutely love it on her. However I think most ladies do not have a convex abdominal area, which would make it less enticing for sure.

Although I don’t love this particular look, I definitely agree with you regarding the allure of sheer. I particularly like the contrast of mixing sheer with either feminine sweetness or masculine lines (like she did here) to balance the sexiness of the transparency. It’s a great way of being sexy in an interesting way.

I’m all for sheer…but modesty too. Who wants to be the subject of lust, really, at the end of the day? It’s not worth it, in my mind. A little mystery is better and frankly, it leads to more respect. (And on that note, I think I’ll return to my knitting.)

. . . and yet , isn’t it not just the “long, sloping curve of the torso” that makes this image compelling, but rather the fact that if the garment weren’t transparent, it would hide the elegant slope of her body? Because the blouse is made of chiffon, we’re allowed an intimacy that is generally not permitted, unless the weather is warm.
One could make the case that human beings started wearing clothes to obscure the truth of what the body was doing underneath all of those textiles. Today, when fashion employs sheer fabrics, it’s a bit of nostalgia for a more vulnerable time in human evolution, when , just a fig leaf or two would have sufficed. I love being reminded to question which fruit actually should be forbidden.

I love that you said that. I often think of clothing as protection – from the elements but also as a visual layer that both expresses “you” if you choose, and also acts as a front to hide or protect the real you. It depends on your intentions, and it’s up to the viewer to either trust you or not. With sheer, that’s taken away a bit, and the wearer is literally and figuratively more transparent.

Since clothing usually has the dual function of protection and expression, but with sheer the clothes are entirely there for expression and thus there is a far more socially interesting interaction between the clothing, the body and the viewer. Clothing usually serves to obscure and change the body, but sheer adds another more immediate aspect of clothing, which is the shape and movement of the body beneath the clothing. Normally, the body is represented through the shape, cut, color, texture, but sheer problematizes the act of viewing by reminding us of the socially charged nature of the body. Through the potentially uncomfortable navigation of looking at a body through sheer fabric, a space that is not clearly governed by social norms of viewing, we are made more aware of ourself as interested viewers looking at the normally covered body of another. It’s a very interesting experience and interaction!

Great text, Scott! I love that – sheer is like a window …. cool.
I think it’s sexy especially when everything else is tailored and covered up – sheer top with leggings or pants, jacket, etc. And if you’re slim and young, like this woman.
There are exceptions to every rule, of course, and I could imagine a hard-bodied cougar rocking this look, too.

Although I like sheer clothes, usually with a slip or cami underneath, I always wondered how one has to walk act in a sheer blouse like the one above. Wrong move or bend and you are all exposed, is it worth that much stress and attention?! On the other hand if you are up for that “struggle of the day”….in my opinion it looks vulgar

She looks lovely and classy, but the sheerness wouldn’t work on a woman who was fuller-figured. Imagine the same look on a woman with a curvy (not necessarily plus-sized, just curvy) body. Everybody would be complaining about how vulgar and cheap she looked. It seems like these sexier pieces and looks can only be worn by thin women without people being totally scandalized.

It’s a truly lovely and artistic look, but sadly not quite practical. I imagine it makes dealing with everything, from professional interactions to catcalling jackasses, and even the simple logistics of physically moving about, that much more complicated. Good for her for expressing something lovely, and too bad for all us that the barriers to artistry are so often prohibitive.

As a busty young feminist who loves sheer tops and skirts, I disagree completely with the comments about needing a particular body shape or needing to be a certain age to pull this look off. Confidence is the only thing you need. The fashion industry is so focused on having the “right” body for the “right” clothes and dressing for your body. I say wear what you want, when you want and how you want. I’ll just be over here rockin’ my sheer blouse, wavin’ my body-love flag.

I find it’s difficult sometimes to wear sheer, but I really love it when it’s a combination with elegance.
I see in Spain many people wearing sheer in a inappropiated way that makes it unpleasant. However, she is gorgerous with it and I think I’ve never been a sexier (but at the same time elegant) look before.

I think it is a disaster, even for this young, very pretty girl. Sheer can indeed be sexy, but the placement of the pockets scream, ‘Look at her boobs!’ rather than ‘Look at the woman!’ Furthermore, her posture and position of her arm with her phone in front of her (which, I would guess is perpetually there) communicates that she isn’t as comfortable in the garment as we might like to think.

Obviously a very elegant handling of sheer. Just slightly irritated by the strange continuation of shirt line to trouser fly. Starts to look like some sort of onesie. Or perhaps I should just stop being a pedant.

I like the blouse but it would definitely look better if she was standing straight. I suspect that it’s because she is not wearing a bra and the blouse is so thin. In my opinion, a good posture is essential, and you shouldn’t wear clothes that make you squirm.
