This is the not-your-grandfathers-hat-hat.
My grandpa wore one of these every day as long as I can remember (and long before it was hip). I love that these hats have come back and that us ladies can wear them too Score!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the Retail Design Diva!
I hate correcting anyone, but I wear a newsboy almost every day. Technically, all but the first aren’t newsboy hats (and the first isn’t a standard issue newsboy–it’s one of the variants). They’re “driving caps” or “flatcaps”. A newsboy or gatsby is characterized by 6-8 panels sewn together with a button at the top center, a bit of extra fabric, and a brim (which is sometimes long). It’s sort of like the 3 Stooges era golf hat, except slightly smaller.
I’m currently on a quest to find “my perfect cap,” something along the lines of the flatcap worn by Edward VIII, or the cap George Clooney wears in Leatherheads… in essence an Ivy/driving/flat cap that has the plumpness of a newsboy but without the button and panels. I’ve been in shops and searched the web and so far all the flatcaps I’ve come across are very trim–It seems to me they aren’t as generously cut as they were back in the day. Any thoughts?
