Oh agreed. Bowties are so lovely because they 1) remind us of another time 2) draw attention to the face 3) wrap a person up like a gift and 4) are as varied as any piece of clothing. I love the look of humility in that first picture. Really beautiful.

Not every man (or woman) can pull this off. Necessary care is required.

I would approach bow ties with caution. They remind me of a certain old world professor from university. Tie carefully…

Add the beard of the man on the left to the man on the right, and you have Portland Oregon fashion at its finest!

They’re tricky. Get it wrong and you look absurd or like you’re trying too hard to be ironic.

But get it right and you’re delicious and quirky and charming.

please stop the bow ties…. it was ok, now it is just a trend…and most men look like bozo the clown wearing them…

    • Ed

      February 7, 2013 at 11:27 am

Bozo really had much bigger problems than the bow tie!

Oh come on…how is a bow tie any sillier than a length of material that hangs down like a tie? So many things in fashion are ridiculous if you only view it objectively…think of ripped jeans that cost in the hundreds of dollars. But that is why fashion appeals too. It reflects the contradictions and whimsy of people.

The right man shows that a bow-tie can be worn casual; a blue (preferably oxford) shirt, a woollen waistcoast and off course a bow tie!

    Very cool outfit!

The last picture evoques another era especially with the framed portrait behind and the marble counter top. Right from a 1930′s novel. Beautiful.

The whole point of wearing a bow tie is that not everybody loves them. Real fashion is showing ones individuality and so the bow tie is the truest form of fashion. Why we love The Sartorialist is that he shows us this individuality so well!
Thanks for showing off the bow tie Scott.

I’m in suits and bow ties daily. Have been since the beginning of high school. Thing is, I’m particularly particular about making sure my suits are sharp, my shirts are heavily starched and perfectly pressed(and usually white), and my bow ties are perfectly tied with a good, tight knot and perfectly symmetrical. To wear one and look “rumpled” like you slept in your clothes defeats the entire purpose.
