I believe what is happening is that the girlfriend of the man in the dark suit is trying to tell him that they're going to be late to where they're going to if he keeps on talking
A description of EITHER the peculiar technique of the new chef at a favorite restaurant OR details of an oddity that the suspension of the Alfa Romeo has developed in the last week.
One of my favourite things when I am in Italy is to watch Italians having an argument over a cell phone. They still gesticulate wildly to their not-present combatant! Beautiful! It's one of the reasons why I am learning Italian. :)
I love their style and their gestures… You should have people guess what they're saying- like add subtitles… I missed your blog yesterday- glad to see a new post today!
For me, after Portuguese Italian is the second most beautiful language on Earth. I feel so lucky to be able to speak and write in both languages. I'd say that they were talking about the tragic happening in Japan: 1st. picture – The man in dark was referring to the violent and giant impact of the earthquake. 2nd. picture – The same man was affirming that the japanese are also still under a serious risk of possible radiation. 3rd. picture – It seems that the old man was explaining something related to the plate tectonics. 4th. picture – Such gesture can be for the enormous tsunami inundation. 5th. picture – "They will have to find a better way, possible, to circumvent that situation." – supposingly said the man in dark.
A superb blog, being just like that: Beautifully simple! My sincere congratulations for "the light" you got. :)
Love how Italians interact with each other. I witnessed a heated debate traveling in a train in Italy. The participants were so heated and so intensely expressive, it seemed they would leave the train enemies. On the contrary, once the train stopped, they bid each other farewell and warm tidings.

The blond woman is the the younger man's younger half sister. The older man is their uncle. Recently, everybody found out that the young woman has been pursued by someone who's the men's rival, a salt and pepper English man, an architect, in his late 40's, with a boyish grin, and his sleeves rolled up, with puppy eyes.
The situation has gotten out of hand. After weeks of sending songs and emails and letters and phone calls out of nowhere from the interested guy, the woman is losing her ground. The emails have gotten more disoriented, abrupt, shorter, careless of grammar, so seductive, and they come day and night. It's about the rain, about the sun, about the stars. Never about anything in particular that has a tone of reality.
The brother is discussing these issues, and expressing his feelings of what the seducer's motivations are, family fortune? Fame? Business competition?
They're trying to put a stop on this.
And, "One more thing, Anna Maria, you are to tell him no," he says to his sister. The older man looks down because he knows exactly what's happening because he's guilty of seducing someone like this in his younger age for not so innocent reasons.
The Italians come from a long, long, long lineage of seduction, courtship and deceive. Why do you think they are clothed this way.
Well what they are saying is obvious. The beautiful blonde asked for directions. The men are having a friendly argument about the best way for her to get to her destination. The older gentlemen mentioned some directions, the younger one had an epiphany (the finger in the air, in the next to last photo), they discussed it further and now the younger guy is going to give her the directions and invite her to dinner. Simple, no?
God I have a long road if I really decide my goal is to be the Israeli you!! I l-o-v-e everything you post… It is exactly like you said- the fun of watching people passing by while you are sitting on a park bench… Sounds so easy to find and capture but actually not easy at all! I have just recently started trying-
To care enough about something to use your hands in expressing your point! And their expression extends out to their clothing, . . . Much better than ppt,
Really excellent series of photos! Love'em, especially as I'm headed to Italy tomorrowâI don't think Italians can speak if they have their hands in their pockets…
These pics are great! I love how Italian men are so passionate about everything and they are so expressive! I love the brown gloves casually thrown in the pocket of the coat and the big pointy lapels on the coat!
half my family are Italian… these pics made me giggle because Italian people, being very passionate.. tend to 'talk with their hands' my mother can be chatting to her sister on the phone but still her hands would be flying in the air. it is really funny.
I think the older gentlemen in Italy wrote the book on elegance. Every time I travel to Italy, I'm always amazed by the suits, gloves textures and fabrics that the men wear.

thats fantastic! im actually really happy i dont know what they are saying though. Whenever i overhear a conversation it just sounds really really unimportant or unintelligent (even though im sure i sound the same way) conversations are really much better when your a part of them
I love their faces and the way they look at each other while conversing, the good manners of the man in the light suit while the other one engages with the blonde woman. Also, something about the set of the sleeves of the dark coat is different.
These men are so involved, intense and animated! These outpouring of expression, when seen in relation to the group of three ladies in the earlier post, who were in a far more restrained (?) and understated conversation, make such lovely contrast!
I understand. You found paradise in America, you had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. And you didn't need a friend like me. But, uh, now you come to me, and you say: "Don Corleone, give me justice." But you don't ask with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you ask me to do murder for money.
These photographs of these two Italian men talking are incredible! I love them. It certainly captures the way Italian men like to talk and use hand gestures to talk(there is a word for it BUT I have a mind blank right now). I also really love the way both are dressed. Check out my trendy blog! http://thetrendydwarf.blogspot.com/
The gloves are awesome. I'm old enough to remember when American men wore gloves and wonderful hats. Men didn't go anywhere without a hat. Women either!
No, no, they are competing for the affections of the blonde woman. In the first picture the dark haired gentleman is her husband and he's asking the older gentleman, what exactly does he exactly think he's doing? See? The older gentleman is at a loss for words. In the second photo, the lady apparently comes to her lover's defense and her husband isn't too happy. "You have caused enough trouble'" he tells her. "Stay out of it." Seeing how upset the husband is, the older gentleman tries to placate him, saying that they are just friends. There is nothing for the husband to worry about. "Friends? My a**," the husband says. The lady steps in again, but there is no calming the husband down. "I told you to stay out of it." He says. The older gentleman decides that it is futile to argue. Fate will take its course.
yes what struck me were the gloves that double as a pocket square??? now that's what you call steeze. I've been working for an Italian company five years running now, I love both their quips and quirks!
All the gestures! I feel like I'm looking at pictures from my family reunion (only they're dressed better)! Something brilliant must've come from that conversation!
Great job capturing the Italianissimo! LOVE the gloves tucked into the breast pocket on the uomo on the right. It's like they want to participate in the conversation as well.
I had always gesticulated a lot but got a really bad habit while living there, mostly beacuse "italian hand language" is easier to learn than italian itself. Nice set of pics!
Wow! Is the man in the dark suit ever handsome!!! Scott….one of my favorites ever! Evokes strength, wisdom, confidence, ….and much more! It's great to be able to see much more depth of who that person might be. Love the fashion element but sometimes it's nice to see a little of where one's style might come from. LIKE!
great pics Sart – im an introvert so love spying on this kind of interaction and non-stop chit chat, hand gestures and expressions…i wonder what they are discussing…business, fashion, trends, politics?
I discovered the Sartorialist only recently. Of the photographs I've seen so far these five are the most dynamic and lively. There's nothing like being able to watch people when they are talking and unaware of being observed; their gestures, hand movements, the chemistry between or among those conversing is pure magic. Thanks for capturing their interaction.
The geographical position of Italy has historically made it a nexus for international trade and cultural exchange. The meeting of so many languages and dialects can largely account for the reliance on gestures and body language. Love the stripe solid stripe solid pattern on the left man.
I don't know what they are talking about either but what this conversation says to me is that by comparison it is very boring to live in the USA where it is rare to see people talk, dress, wear their hair, smoke, put gloves in pocket or do anything else with such individualistic style and flair!
It isn't just about dressing……it's about living. And Europeans seem to really know how to live. Thank you, Sartorialist, for a truly delightful photo sequence.
They look like Jean Paul Belmondo and the bad guy in Spiderman 2. I think that the Belmondo guy is very chic and elegant. Great photos as always. Regards, S.
The passion in these photos are awesome! Now this is what's so great about photography…not just being posey posey, but being able to capture a moment in time! And, the passionate brunette is a hottie! Fabulous!!!!
they're talking about… politics! Their gestures are really expressive, they're moving their hands vigorously BUT their faces are serious and they're concentrated on what the other is saying. Thus it cannot be football, beautiful women nor cars, otherwise they would be smiling much more. How do I know that? Well, I'm italian :) our government is a joke, our economy is trembling but we never lose passion in life and that is something I am really proud of.

"Stay out of it."
Seeing how upset the husband is, the older gentleman tries to placate him, saying that they are just friends. There is nothing for the husband to worry about.
"Friends? My a**," the husband says.
The lady steps in again, but there is no calming the husband down. "I told you to stay out of it." He says.
The older gentleman decides that it is futile to argue. Fate will take its course.

Thank you, Sartorialist, for a truly delightful photo sequence.

they're talking about… politics!
