I might be wrong but I feel like a lot of the women here in NYC have been shopping for Spring over the last several weeks but the cold temps have been keeping them from breaking out their new purchases which is just killing them!
I have seen only a few young ladies( like the one above) who have successfully layered a Spring-ish dress, over tights and under a wool coat.
The forecast is for another week of this weather in NYC, luckily I’m headed to Milan where Spring has sprung!

Hello Mr. Sartorialist!
I just came across your blog yesterday and I would like to thank you for the great surprise and how I am enjoing it.
Your images are really interesting. Even If I wasn´t interested in fashion, which, actually, I´m not, these portraits of people in the street are superbe.
These days in Barcelona is the same with the weather and is really complicated to dress properly in order to feel comfortable. Today, you help me!
Thanks again.

It’s true! I’ve been going nuts not being able to wear my patterned summer babydoll dress and shorts and such, so I finally started layering…I simply could not wait any longer!!!

I love the clean look on her esp. the dress and wool coat. However, I’m not fan of the Robin Hood shoes. They weighed her down too much.
Enjoy the beautiful Spring weather in Milan.

Nice one: you are definitely onto something here… it’s the dilemma of women all over northeastern North America: what to do when it’s grey, freezing and possibly “slushing” in mid-April… A smart example of how to bridge the seasons (spring dress, tights, warm-enough coat, not too wintry boots).

i think girls have been layering out of season dresses all winter

you are right. I packed away my winter clothes and got out the sandals during the warm snap, and am getting antsy. this freezing rain business needs to stop, immediately: my shoulders need to feel the sun.

You are completely right. Although hopefully after all this dreadful rain the weather will get warmer. However, it is an excuse to break out my favorite Marc rain boots…
I love that girl’s coat, I’ve been looking for a shorter wool coat in that exact color for who knows how long… I feel like New York women always wear the most excellent coats.

Her coat is beautiful. does anyone have a clue where it may be from? Most coats that are stunning in street snapshots tend to be from Balenciaga, I wonder if this is the case here…

Love the Vivienne Westwood pirate boots. Something about either the angle or the coat and dress lengths foreshortens her legs a little. It’s as if she’s shortwaisted. I can’t make out the perspective – but think she looks great, regardless!

The wool coat and the dress just perfectly matched. Love the wool coat. But the weather over here is killing hot, so it’s rarely for us wearing any trench coat under the hot burning sun.

i love this look but i would feel too self-conscious in the boots (even if i liked them). I wonder what the less goofy, yet still interesting, option for footwear would be here? ideas?

Genrally I’m all for season-appropriate – in style as much as in food. Floaty fabrics in the cold seem to me like hearty soup in the heat – unappetizing. But even I’ve had enough of this neverending winter – all hail layering (even as minimal & streamlined as wool coat over spring frock over tights) as the all-purpose style solution to wacky weather!

Is anyone else tired of the ersatz military look that’s been around for the past year or so? I do love the color on this coat, but enough with the dress-up-and-play-soldier stuff (see also Dior Homme Femme, part deux).

I love the dress and the boots. I’m in love with silk print dresses at the moment. They’re perfect for warm weather. In London it was 25 celcius yesterday and its going to be about 23 today. Forget about spring – I’m already digging out my summerwear.

I think the spring dress works because the colors are on the muted side – so while she’s definitely looking forward, she’s got an eye to the actual weather too. That coat has a beautiful shape, too.

I’m going to copy this look tomorrow, as it’s starting to get cold here in Australia. But a neat pair of lace-up ankle boots or chunky Mary-Janes would improve it. How can she walk in those Westwood slops?

we all on the East coast have been dealing with spring tease. My daughters, Abi (7) and Molly (5)…have also been trying to pull off the layered spring slash it’s still freezing look. Capris with leg warmers, shorts with knee highs and dresses with jean underneath. At least it’s not snowing!

Did anyone notice how the neckline of the dress perfectly hits the coats collar indent (is there a proper word for that?)
The colour combination, the shot of grey cardigan, is brilliant. She looks comfortable AND fashionable, how many people can do that!
