I hate to put up so many pictures of Garance, but I just sincerely think she has one of the most incredibly well-developed personal styles of anyone I know. Â It really has to do with her ability to mix pieces from all different price ranges.
And also – and this is very important – to be appropriate to the setting. Â In the picture above, for example, we were having breakfast at Ruschmeyer’s in Montauk. Â Garance stole a pair of my floral print Etro shorts and mixed them with a Breton-striped shirt under a vintage kid’s sweatshirt, and pink Zara ballerinas. Â As you can see above, she does sporty as well as she does the red carpet.
And here, for example: on the way back from the beach at Ditch Plains, Garance has stolen my shirt. Â However, when you looks this good, I’m not complaining.
She is also wearing a hat that she bought at a Montauk drugstore, because she hates the direct sun. Â Again, the key here is not the maker of the shirt, the maker of the hat…it’s about the visual impact that it makes. Â I think Garance’s background as an artist helps her look past the price tag and see the potential of things.

Great pictures of Garance, she is really very beautiful! But Scott, when you describe her talent to look past labels and price tags, that is how we ordinary ppl do! Common people who are not in the fashion industry and not earning 6000- 20.000usd/ month, but maybe 1.500usd. Its great that Garance does that, but it might not have to do with her past as an artist. People with less money do that all the time. Not blaming you or anything here, but just reminding you that there is a lot of people for whom 80 usd is a lot for a pair of jeans, or 200usd is considered expensive shoes. But thanks for the great pics, and say Hey to Garance that she is absolutely New York skinny in the second pic.

Sounds like a great system. Would that my Mr. didn’t outweigh me by 40 pounds, six inches and had your wardrobe!
Seriously, she looks fabulous and I have some serious envy going for those floral shorts.

You have every reason to be proud and appreciative of a woman with style and taste. Garance has that confidence in her style that so many, if not most, American women lack.

There is nothing wrong with pictures of your wife. She is stylish, and more interestingly they seem more personal.
Youd be surprised at how price and label snobby even very, very middle class people can be. Scott’s comment reminds me of my Mom. My very middle class Mother and her friend just about vomit at the stuff I buy at thrift stores or Target and such. I tell Mom that I honestly like it but she won’t hear of it. Sometimes she asks me if I am doing alright financially when she sees (perfectly nice) things I have bought. I wonder what she would think if I went to Kmart, but there isn’t one around here.

i religiously visit your blog and LOVE your work…but i have to say, i was disappointed by your comment about style and price tags. i would never want to give style a price tag, it comes from inside and transcends price. it is a deeply creative expression of self and i certainly agree that garance has beautiful style. in addition, a garment or item you enjoy everyday does not have to be expensive(or a designer brand) to be aesthetically perfect and add grace to your life.

Thank you so much for highlighting personal style over fashion. I have been following your site for a long time and have seen a gradual shift to more fashion industry-heavy profiles as your own profile has risen. What I have loved so much about this site is that you celebrate the ensemble – not the wealth of the person wearing it. I personally make next to nothing compared to many of the people you shoot, but most people would never guess because I am not above a bargain and it’s more important to me to have a look that I love than a label* on the inside of my shirt that no one will see but me.
*However, I love labels – I just have to be more creative with my finances. ;)

I SO agree with you! Garance is my No 1 blogger, and the reason that I have a very humble and ”poor” Blog….
I think there is a natural talent in some people like Garance, to mix different clothes/fabrics/labels and to have such a CHIC +ELEGANT look. I call this ”Fashion Mathematics”!!!!(I named it like this)!!! So Garance takes an A+ in Maths!!!!
Also…the fact that you are ”her man” and that you are in love with her…it’s all over your writting! I love you both, really
Kisses from Greece! (When are you comingt to visit us here???)

Scott,
How evident is it from this pictorial that behind every great man there is a great woman. Cool to discover that the two photographs also peek into your intimacy, exposing the way you “see” Garance. Both are sensible scenes. Lovely.
What bike is she riding?

ALSO, SHE IS GORGEOUS!!!
sorry I had to put this in capital letters. And this is not because she is French (I’m French too, and believe me we are not all gorgeous), she is special and I agree, being an artist, helps.

Your current obsession with the ana body type makes more sense now especially in light of her complaints of being “fat”. It reminds me of how in France we are still is such deep denial of eating disorders. As for the style it does indeed remind me of the style I and my peers grew up with the south of France. I suppose it is considered unique in the context of NYC.

i love your photographs and dorance looks great! but what you’ve described as her “well developed” sense of personal style is not really shown here. women have been stealing clothes from boyfriends and husbands for years. wearing an over sized shirt to the beach w/ panama hat definitely not new. it comes down to what you have on hand really! but regardless i still love both of your blogs.

I love this post. First of all the pictures are beautiful. Secondly often times when I like a picture or an image I can’t really explain why I like it, and then I realized that it’s mainly because things make sence. There is a piece about Garance, she gets it, she makes sense. She understand what she is doing, and most importanly she does do loom like she is trying, it all seems to come natural to her.
Once again, the pictures are beautiful, Scott, couldn’t agree with you more.
What else can I say, I particularly like the pictures you take of Garance, it’s not just about her style, they are great, always.

There simply is something about Garance! Reading Garance’s work you feel as though you know her and this is why her photos are so popular. It’s like looking at a dear friend’s holiday snaps.

She is French, and most of the French women (and for that matter, Spanish too, but differently) I met and worked had this ability to look great with what seems like very little effort. From corporate lawyers to computer repair technicians, they all had a sense of style and identity.

“I think Garance’s background as an artist helps her look past the price tag and see the potential of things.” Honestly, I think this is a true sign of a fashion lover… because it matters not the tag, only the possibilities. She does a lovely job. I am a huge thrifter… because that is the only way I can afford quality. From Dolce & Gabbana to vintage DvF, I wouldn’t be wearing it if it wasn’t for thrift stores. But these things paired with my Target and drug store finds birth outfits worth living in. Kudos to Garance. And, yet, I think it is often her spirit that makes the clothes. It always comes through in the photos. =^)

She looks great, but really that’s simply classic style. It’s the way everyone used to dress. It’s just in this age of overload and gimmacks, simple and clean looks like a big deal. Really like that all white bike.

couldn’t agree more.
“…Again, the key here is not the maker of the shirt, the maker of the hat…it’s about the visual impact that it makes. I think Garance’s background as an artist helps her look past the price tag and see the potential of things.”

I was just thinking the exact same thing today! So many times my absolutely favorite items, that I literally wear endlessly are from thrift stores, or just random places… No brand to brag with, just the right piece at the right moment…
