I’m in full-0n book signing mode right now. New York, London, Paris, Barcelona were great and last weekend Philadelphia was fantastic!
This Fall we’re booked for Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Â a tour of the Far East and a few more European cities like Poznan, Poland. Domestically we’re close to finalizing Houston, Boston, and Nashville for signings.
My publisher will pay for one more domestic city ….but which one???
Maybe you guys can help me decide.

I don’t see one Canadian date on your list… perhaps a trip to Montreal? It is a cultural hub, where English and French tradition mix together to weave a unique city filled with fascinating individuals. It’s the centre of the Quebecois fashion industry, and thus provide you with a chance to discover a new set of talented designers and other professionals. And, the food is great! It would be a great fit for both you and Garance, I am sure.

I don’t live there anymore, and I was born and raised in Toronto, but I totally vote for Montreal and then a side trip to Quebec City! The style isn’t in line with mine, but I always find it so interesting/creative. One sees a lot of people on the street who are clearly not working with big fashion budgets but who do interesting things with vintage and low-cost pieces.

Minneapolis would love to see you. I understand the appeal of the more fashion-focused coasts, but the Midwest is a gem in itself that many people do not realize, especially Minneapolis. There have been so many unique styles that I have seen here in the Twin Cities and it has so much to offer but is so underrepresented. As someone who loves fashion and style, I’ve always felt frustrated when people dismiss the Midwest or not even consider it possible that fashion and style thrive here. It would be great if your keen eye and vivid photography could show off a bit of the Midwest flair, a place that many Americans wouldn’t even consider to house such a fantastic wealth of style and originality.
Thank you,
Audrey

I would really recommend MontrĂ©al. Following the spring and summer’s tuition hike protests, the student community (francophone in particular) is at its most self-conscious and motivated. Vandalism here amounts to covering advertisements on rental bicycles with poetry. There is a beauty and passion not to be missed in this city, fashion being no exception to these qualities. Try to beat the end of the autumn transition into winter; while the jackets are light and the sweaters remarkable.

Definetey ATHENS GREECE !!!!
Because although it looks contradictory in a city which encapsulates the terrifying reality of crisis, to present a book of street fashion ,it’s not !!!
Because most of all, THE SARTORIALIST is a book about style , which is not an economical matter, you have it or you can cultivate it by looking at other genuine people.
Also living in a crisis you are more eager about new dynamics ,and you appreciate in different less consuming way.I believe all the above suits your philosophy. Tell me which city is more appropriate when we talk about a philosophy ?
So we are waiting for you ,and I would be hap;y to help you in any possible way.
A dedicated follower of fashion with a personal edge.

Though not a big city like the others you’re visiting, Raleigh, NC is a great place. There is a lot of local interest in fashion and design. I know this is a LONG, long shot, but I’m going to make a pitch for Baltimore. Baltimore?!? Yes, Baltimore. Fashion-wise there is a totally strange and wonderful mix of things happening here.
1. Beautiful, strange and often bawdy outfits emerge from both East and West Baltimore. Straight up poverty and lack of access to big brand names result in some seriously creative combinations.
2. RISD art students who graduate and can’t afford to move to Brooklyn or DC instead take up residence in Baltimore neighborhoods where studio space is cheap and plentiful and they remain immune to big-city trends.
3. The elephant in the room/city is the dominating presence of nerdy, fashionless medical/science types association with Johns Hopkins. They hide their sartorial deficiencies under long white coats and would benefit enormously from your presence.
4. The “Hon” thing. Think John Waters and pink flamingos and Hairspray and retro-chic polyester galore. Working-class Baltimore has always taken great pride in it’s appearance for better or worse.
Of course, most of the sartorialistas of Baltimore are accustomed to being looked over and would gladly make the trip to DC if you signed there instead. We understand. :)

For domestic, I think San Francisco is the biggest one that’s not on your list, but for something unusual and different I think you should head to the Southwest. Texas is different than New Mexico or Arizona and I would personally love to see you shoot Americana fashion against those states’ landscapes. Plus I bet that students and style connoisseurs there are riffing on classic Americana and it would be great to capture how they define Southwestern style in 2012.

What about the Middle East?
Forget the stereotype you see on the news and come to Israel :)
Tel Aviv is our fashion capital and we’d love to see you here.
Sun, Beaches, crazy nightlife, within a couple hours drive we have the lowest point on earth the insanely beautiful Dead Sea and of course holy Jerusalem the city of three religions within the hour.
And if you feel like seeing one of the new World Wonders – you can always go to Petra in Jordan (4 hour drive or half an hour flight).
You’ll never regret it I can reassure you :)

I suggest Berkeley/Oakland. Across the bay from San Francisco, has its own vibe and charm. Maybe you could support one of the local bookstores, there used to be so many in the pre-amazon.com days. (Mrs. Dalloway’s Books, Builders Booksource)
Neighborhoods to check out in Berkeley/Oakland: Gourmet Ghetto, Fourth Street, Elmwood/College Ave., Piedmont, Claremont, Shattuck near UC Berkeley, Telegraph.

You’re a professional photographer, right??? You love photographing over the top beauty and light and improbable scenes and people. Right? We promise you SUN double rainbows every day, thousands of waterfalls, the most diverese cultural, fashion scene in the world! we’re talking, HONOLULU, HAWAII…..and her lovely neighbor Islands…Kauai (yea),
Maui and the Big Island! All the wonders of the natural world (including fashion) are right here….and will take your photographers’ breath away!
And, most importantly, you will make your beloved Garances’ dream come true….as the famous Waikiki Beach Boys (it’s an esteemed, sought after profession here)…have her living her long time dream of truly authentic surfing that long gentle, iconic Waikiki wave into your heart forever! In fact the two of you may never return to NYC,,,like me…once you feast your eyes on this improbably beautiful spot. This glorious, most remote little land mass on earth! Every powerful country on earth tried to claim her for her wonders and beauty..but only the US, succeeded. Mark twain called it the most beautiful place on earth. And our esteemed President, when asked recently what he would do if he could ever have one more day as an anonymous citizen, he quickly and dreamily said “take the wonderful coastal drive fromHonolulu out to Hanuma Bay for a full, uninterupted day of body surfing”!
I’m sure the classy Neiman Marus at the famous Ala Moana Shopping Center (built in the 50′s,the worlds’ first, most beautiful shopping center) would be delighted to host you.
And then you’ll take the 20 nimute flight to Kauai, a little island from which you may never return, becuase you will be too busy taking exquisite photos, climbing improbable mountains, snorkeling and taking underwater shots of creatures whose colors and forms are other wordly. And reveling in the great cultural diversity of people, food and Fashion/Street style Many don’t return. You’ll have to come for yourself to see why!
The water is crystal clear blue, and warm and waiting for you and Garance!
AND..it IS a domestic flight!

Oh please come to Denver. There is a very cozy book store called “Tattered Cover” Downtown Denver. It has a vintage feel to it with old wooden stairs and high ceilings. The shelves are sometimes a bit crooked, and you can see the aging of wood – oh, it’s pure bliss to sink in one of the couches on a cold winter day with an oversized cup of coffee and a Hemingway.

I realise this is a long-shot but I would suggest you twist your publisher’s arm and come to Brisbane, Australia. I think the experience would be beneficial as the inhabitants of the city thrive on their indivuality and creativity. Also; as the home of great Aussie fashion designers, we champion Sass&Bide, Easton Pearson and a host of fresh Talent including House of Ezis (had to throw that in there, definitely google them). We would love to see you come to sunny Queensland for a holiday with Garance, we’d make you both very welcome! Looking forward to seeing you soon!

In the fall, the weather is beautiful and the sky is in deep blue. The best time to trip to Beijing.
You can take a straight flight of Air China from NYC to Beijing. After one night’s rest, go wondering in the old-cum-new city. And before dark, take a quick flight to Taipei to try the food in night markets and see the local people. When you wake up in the morning, remember to have some Oolong tea, and then take a flight to Shanghai to try local breakfast specialities like Xiaolong Bao (small steam bun). Then go get lost in the city. If possible take a side trip to Hangzhou by 30 mins’ hi-speed intercity train, where the West Lake locates in the city. Take street fashion shot there against the backdrop of mountains and waters. Good idea, right? Before you leave for Beijing, pay a visit to Tea Museum and taste Long Jing (Dragon Well) tea, the best known green tee variety, which is locally grown there. Before you leave Beijing for NYC, you’ll do the book signing, after party, and media things.

It seems that so far no one has recommended any of the New England states. So I would ask if you could come to Hartford,Ct or a least somewhere nearby there.I’m a college student so I really don’t have that much money to travel and having you come somewhere close by is something I have always wished you could do.
I know that most people don’t really consider coming to Ct. because it is not considered a major hub in fashion but we do have many art galleries and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking in the fall.So if you could at least consider it and if you can’t make it this time around please consider it in the future.
With Kind Regards and High Hopes
Therese

A Poem Plug for San Francisco
We know, dear Scott, that you can go
Most anywhere to sign
But allow us to formally invite you
To a mecca of design
We may not have the fashion prestige
Of New York, Milan, or Paris
But if you’re looking for photo opps
San Francisco is the fairest
We can boast about many things
From clothes to food to fonts
And we know this is the perfect place
To wine and dine Garance
With rolling hills, and West Coast sun
SF is hard to beat
You’ll find the most eccentric mix
Of people on the street
Seattle is too rainy, Scott
And Portland isn’t bad
But we can guarantee you
The best sushi you’ve ever had
Our residents are beautiful
And come in every size and shape
So make your way to San Francisco
The foggy city by the bay
Hope to see you here soon, Scott.

Is it possible that I am the first vote for Salt Lake City? I hope that doesn’t make it less likely, but instead all the more intriguing for you. It would be a very unpredictable choice and just right for some “out of the fashion box” inspiration. I used to live in New York and miss the style and eclectic feel of the city soooo much.
Bring us some style to SLC!
p.s. my husband gave me your book for Christmas last year (our first one together) and it’s my treasure. We’re such big fans. Thanks for all of the amazing things you do.

Please come to Orlando… We literally have -the- worst dressed people in the country residing here. No, really… Flip flops and socks is the standard fashion statement in the winter time.
It would be nice if someone with style and an amazing eye graced our presence and shed a little light. along with infinite wisdom.

Ames, Iowa. No, I’m not kidding. Ames is a hip, liberal, cool, diverse, smallish city that is basically run by the university and its students. The university brings so much diversity; there are people here from around the world, which brings many different sartorial tastes together. The fashion department at ISU is one of the best in the US-you could give a lecture too! If not Ames, Des Moines would be great too. This is the blog that basically got me interested in fashion blogs so hope you come!!!

If you do choose to visit DC (I’ve lived here since ’99, and yes, the style can be diluted and weak), check out Dr. K’s Vintage and his group of friends (an eclectic mix of store owners, photographers, musicians, and artists). They have remarkable style and are some of the nicest people.

Side note to many of my fellow commenters: he said “domestic city” and was referring to a city in the US. I’m sure Kuala Lumpur and Cape Town are the bomb, but they’re not stateside.
