Today is my first day back in India!

Mumbai all this week and Kolkata the week after.

Any scenes in either city?

Any Goths in Kolkata or or Rockabilly in Mumbai or something else I need to see?

YES! I’m hopeful I won’t see the usual pictures of India here… e.g. “And here we have a 100-year-old yogi in a bright orange turban” That’s wonderful, but more than half of India’s population is less than 35… just a friendly reminder from an ABCD :)

Hello! I feel that Indian women are often negatively portrayed in the media (i.e. as poverty stricken, victims of abuse, backward etc). And as a girl of Indian descent (I live in Malaysia) , this has always had such a negative effect on me. Its hard to live in a world where brown skin is not embraced, and my race is often relegated as inferior. I came across this Bombay based makeup artist recently https://www.instagram.com/eltonjfernandez/?hl=en and he has opened my eyes to the beauty and modernity of Indian women that is often not captured. I think it would be great if you could try your hand at portraying the modern Indian woman, just like this shot, instead of the usual stereotypical images we see on the internet…would be nice to see something new…!

      Hi Desi,
Greetings ! I too am formerly from Malaysia, now in California for many years. I’ve had many Indian friends from Malaysia and last month was in Kolkata, India to visit a charity. I didn’t see too much great fashion but it was not all poor and destitute. I love the colors of the sari’s there.

Scott, the Royal Opera House in Mumbai was recently reopened to the public after a long overdue restoration. It should make for an interesting visit.

    Welcome to the city!

Try not to miss the lesser known gems tucked away in the alleys and bylanes. eg. The Ripon Club (founded in 1884) at Fountain with its ageless charm, known for its authentic Parsi food.

The reopened Opera House and Esplanade House in South Mumbai are definitely worth a visit too.

Looking out for this weeks pictures!

I remember this lovely pic from your last time here.

In Mumbai you should take the 9am metro ride from Versova to the last station – you might see someone interesting. Bandra bandstand and Powai might also be of interest.
In Kolkata stroll around the Park Street and adjoining streets (little russel street) etc., you might see some interesting outfits. Also, Swabhumi.
How about a Sari pic this time round?
And – no stops in Delhi this time?

Get someone to take you to Dadar in Bombay for the Paper Kolhapuri slippers, they are beautifully made! Also stop by the government owned Khadi Bhandar for silks.

There is also Bombay Shirt Company round the corner from a great little cafe strip in Mumbai. Might be worth a look see – some nice bhandgala collars and an onsite tailor with big beautiful windows and wooden floors.

I like this photograph extremely. It is one of the nicest I’ve seen in a long time. The young woman is soentirely elegant. She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn. Impeccable style. Please make more of this photographs!
