This kid and his Dad were playing at the park. The kid was literally climbing the walls or ,in this case, fences. I love that he has a feather in his hair – I don’t know how healthy that is but kids are strong.
The “trad” kid on the scooter is also part of the family – I’m seeing a Family Ties meets the Lower East Side sitcom in the future for this family

I love this! It’s wonderful to see a glimpse of life somewhere and hearing a little about that moment. Keep up these little stories…they are great. Maybe one day you could interview them too!

Great shots! The first one looks like it’s out of a movie like Tarzan or Blue Lagoon. Kids have such wonderful, uninhibited smiles!

LOVE love love this post!
What a beautifully quirky kid!
He will have full on dreds in a couple of years.
That photo of him should be in a gallery.
Thanks for all the great photos and fashion booty!

Adorable, in a feral way. :) He reminds me of the little kid in Road Warrior with the boomerang.

Not that many brave hippies with their families climbing walls on big cities…I guess an encounter of this sort is magical then: a brief never-land.

I can’t help saying “I just love this kid and the picture as a whole!”
That is why I love NY.
By the way, this is my fist time leaving a comment on your blog.
I simply enjoy your shots.
Thank you~

i definitely get a Mowgli vibe here…
anyways, if i’m to be honest, that child’s hair is shameful. If he was a teenager or adult choosing to wear his hair that way, then fair play to him. But he’s not, he’s a child and his parent(s) aren’t bothering to look after his appearance.
I don’t want to sound uptight, but if you want a child to grow up into someone who’ll take pride in his appearance (i.e. not go out in sweatpants and flipflops) you have to start early.
End of rant.

Scott, you’re making me weep with joy. These are images of New York that I thought were extinct.
I remember an entire family with dreadlocks in late 80′s Brooklyn. The mother was blonde and Swedish, the father African American…three kids. The children were the most beautiful creatures I had ever seen. I use to see them on my morning runs…seeing them gave me an overwhelming sense of peace and joy. Sounds corny but it is true. I feel the same thing looking at this photo. It gives me that feeling, that Lou Reed feeling that everything is gonna be alright.

ah, child of the unicorn. doesn’t look like a feather to me – but…why would a feather or whatever in your hear NOT be healthy? bacteria train the immunesystem; we become allergic and UNhealthy if we are too hygienic. anti-bacteria? don’t believe the hype! lovely pictures though..

don’t forget that the other kid in the photo (on the scooter) is also part of the family and he could not be more well groomed with his perfect side-parted hair. I got the feeling that the parents were letting their kids express themselves.
Lets be honest, all little boys want to be like their fathers so his hair really doesn’t surprise me and i think it is a sweet expression of love for dad. I bet if dad had a mohawk the little boy would want one too.

The kid eerily reminds me of the Native-American themed collection we just got from D&G. Looked awful on the runway, but maybe he can pull it off.

Oh Jeez! whatwouldjanicedicksondo!! The kid is off in the park with his dad!!!He isn’t attending a state event! For us city folks the play ground is the eqivalent of the back yard. You wear in the play groundwhat one would wear in the back yard to muck about.
There is time and place for kids to be in their bib and tucker. The park just isn’t one of them unless you plan to set up a massive therapy fund to go along with the fancy play ground clothing.

I’m certainly not saying that you should dress the kid up in a mini seersucker suit before you let him on the swings…i’m saying comb your kid’s hair before he leaves the house. It’ll teach him something.

whatwouldjanicedickinsondo,
that was an ignorant comment… thank you for sharing
how is it that having dreadlocks will not instill a sense of pride in a child? in all actuality I would say that will instill a deep sense of pride in him where he would learn to not care what ignorant twits (such as people with limited experience with people who don’t look like them) might think of him
shameful? you even thinking to type that was shameful

This is such a great picture. These kids are so lucky that their dad just lets them “hang out”. No perfect outfits, hair required. It’s tough in an urban environment and I give him full marks for this. The kids are beautiful and will probably be really cool adults.
