For the last 10 years I have been living in such a neutral world. My color palette went from beige to grey however, lately I find myself so attracted to color. Color combinations, color palettes, color patterns. Recently when I was in Modernlink,  nothing stood out the way this chair did. The shock of color only served to enhance the design details. It’s one of the only pieced I have ever considered buying not for function.

The great thing about Modernist furniture is the use of color such red, orange or in this case blue to visually enhance the shape, and to add punch and excitement to a rather neutral palette.

However, that chair is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen… suggest you search out Knoll, Herman Miller, Turner, or the hundreds of great furniture designers/manufacturers/showrooms in NYC

That chair is a classic! Quirky yes, but ugly makes you sound like you don’t know much about mid-century design…

That is the Wegner “Papa” chair!!! One of the absolute great and most collected pieces of furniture of the 20th Century!!! You suggest he search out standard corporate Knoll and Herman Miller? I suggest you read some books and get an education about design, because you do not have an “eye.”. Holy crap, your comment is hilariously ignorant.

There is something too be said for stepping outside your norm to liven things up. I had a Miller-inspired chair and ottoman reupholstered in orange leather and never looked back–it goes with everything and nothing at the same time and works because I committed myself to it. I do browns and tans.

The upholsterer was this older man that was convinced he was going to talk me out of doing such a crazy thing–I could’ve bought a decent used car for what it cost, but I still love that doggone chair.

Scott you won’t regret it. This shade of blue works beautifully with soft neutrals. Grey, taupe, mustard, beige. It would definitely act as a focal point in any room. I would suggest however, that you repeat the colour in a small dose somewhere else for a little balance. Perhaps a vintage hand made, ceramic vase or pot, a painting or a cushion. Enough to break the fixation on this spectacular piece.

It is the Papa Bear armchair by Hans Wegner originally designed forthe danish company AP Stolen. We bought one many years ago. It was so comfortable, I used to take naps in it (if that isn’t functional ?) We really liked it much. Our cat did not. So we had to let it go – the armchair not the cat .

Few chairs reach the level of comfort as the Hans Wegner Papa Bear chair. If it is authentic (not reproduction) please do buy. It will make you happy for life and will increase in value for your children or for charity when you die.

I love the little dance going on between the wood tones and the blue. And it looks very comfortable. A wing chair, but with an airy, light feel to it. What I find interesting is that everyone has commented on the chair and no one so far has responded to your question about colors. I have been wanting more color in my wardrobe for a year or two now, but not doing much about it. Do you think it is a response to the economy?

Maybe it the scandinavian in me talking, but grey (or even more so beige) seems like too much color for your house. White is all you need.

Love the Wegner chair. You should see some of Finn Juhl’s or Peter Hvidt’s designs as well. These Danish furniture architects are the creme de la creme when it comes to interior design, and their colour palettes are stunning.

White is definitely not all you need! (this is the ultimate misunderstanding within Scandinavian interior design, although understandable since mastering colour within design or fashion is quite an art, but worth every effort)

I have so many fond memories of this chair because I grew up with one, it came in to my life when I was 3 or 4 years old (I am 60) – my parents decided on a very warm red colour for it because they felt that their living room would otherwise be too dull with all the grey, white and beige tones that were so dominating in scandinavian homes in the fifties. And yes, it´s so comfortable that you can actually sleep in it! They only started manufacturing it again in recent years, until the you could only buy it second hand, like the one in your picture. I sometimes gaze at this chair in the window of Illum department store in Copenhagen, and I can tell you that it is VERY expensive :-)
