Wonderful colors, also in the shot itself. Once again my only little problem is with the platform shoes. They downgrade the dress for me, which is otherwise quite nice. The pink glasses are cute with the other dress.
The woman to the left looks great. I think what works with her outfit are the proportions and colour. The feathery look to the right is slightly irritating – I hate to say that but I don't enjoy the outfit. It's a bit too much fluff for me. I'm sure she looks lovely on other days.
i thought it was impossible to fit that much pure, unadulterated crazy-whimsical-perfect-glamourous BEAUTY into one frame. thanks for proving me wrong and offering (once again) a deliciously inspiring snapshot!!
Wow, that pink dress is so cute, kind of reminds me of SJP on Sex and the City. The other girl's outfit is so cute, I'm more likely to wear something like that, so cute!
It seems everyone wearing heels….is there any brave chic who wears FLAT during NYFW?
I know I probably wouldn't want to be the "shortie" there!! ^^
THeir outfit are so Refreshing!! I kind of having mixed emotion by looking at the picture…. summer? Fall? Cruise? Love the fact that she uses the neon belt
Scott, I hope I run into you in NYC some day. Such a great inspiration and photographer. Be sure to follow my blog at tuxandtie.blogspot.com and on twitter at tuxandtie Thanks, Alex (www.alexingram.com)
Wow! What can I say about both of these ladies in their Couture? They are both really mixing it up today. I am reminded, again, of the 80's. I love the color of Anna's dress, not sure about the shoe combo but alas, her friend has the sock thing going with her fantastic platforms. All in all, a heady mix but I'm working on wrapping my head around it! Anna is what Anna is, so if she chooses to wear color blocked sandals that in no way shape or form match or compliment the rest of her attire, she is going to get away with it. You go girl!
Anna has always been SO stylish and original. But here she is dressed for the pantomime, and her knees are shouting "Cover us quick!!!". Her so-called competition looks far more age-appropriately dressed, even if I hate the socks with those shoes. Anna's shoes are gorgeous, but they have nothing to do with the dress, which is just silly. Sorry, but this is one time she has let us down.
I am still in awe of that dress, Its simply stunning. If I'm not mistaken its by Jason Wu. I actually did a post on it yesterday. Anna is such a fashion icon to me.
But why the socks…?! The other girl's shoes are very nice, as well as her outfit. To me it looks as if she is coming back from the party in the morning hours and just met her 'competition' :)
This seems like the definition of too much effort and not enough fun. The shoes look painful and like they are on loan. The dress, on her, reads as something silly- muppetational even.
LOVE THIS MOMENT!!! The pink feathers, electric green belt, leopard bag, studded shirt and socks…EVERYTHING is PERFECT with the sun hitting their backs….GORGEOUS! GO SCOTT GO!!!!!!! kisses xoThe Beckerman Girls
Ahh first person to comment! yay! Anyway, I just love how Anna always surprises me. I also love how fashion right now sort of looks like how I dresses myself in first grade-with reckless abandon! Of course I didn't wear 5 inch stilettos but I loved mixing patterns and i LOVED feathers. So fun!
pink looks like something carrie bradshaw would die to wear. love the lime green belt but not with those shoes. the unfussy hair and great shades are both lovely, im interested in those fun white pants behind her…other outfit, looks meh
I don't understand when girls wear socks which create the illusion of shorter legs. The feather dress is very chic and channels SJP and the shoes are amazing. The whole colour palette just works. (Though the wrinkly knees are not so attractive)
JASON WU DRESS AND MARC JACOBS SUNNIES right? :D probably got the designer for the sunglasses wrong. can't exactly remember. god I love that dress, it reminds me of that feather dress from 'Top Hat'
Who would have ever thought lime and peach would look that chic? I've yet to see Anna less than exquisite. Beautiful shot! I'm intrigued by that purple ruffly hem…
I am sorry to say that, but I do not understand why people love Anna d.r. maybe she is good at work for for sure she is not that pretty and her style? ugly….
mmm…. I love this women, her calculated but not too much originality. But this time… I saw her knees first, I have to confess. But we are discusting about her outfit, are we? ;)
Maybe in person to person the colors was matching but on picture is not the case. Not the best match she did in my opinion.
Nice ! All these feathers ! I just saw a documentary two days ago about a girl doing this kind of work for designers… They call it "plumassiere" in France. Amazing shot :)
I don't think Anna has to worry about the competition! Those black socks do nothing for the other outfit. However, I do think she may want to rethink her skirt lengths as her knees age faster than her figure…and I know – I'm her age!
I love their shoes and the socks with the stiletto are priceless. I look forward to your posts very much. Sending love all the way from India. http://followmyrecipe.blogspot.com/
Absolutely LOVE it! I wouldn't be surprised if they were best friends/sisters. The girl in purple has amazingly pulled off the socks and the heels thing and I would've never matched the grren belt with that dress but she makes it look amazing. Love it! X
I don't know how old she is, but everytime I see her in your pictures I have the feeling she dresses like an eccentric 20something and she looks too old for that. Not elegant at all, in my opinion. I love your pictures though, great job Sartorialist :)
my goodness, i think both of these looks are horrible. and i think that is the first time i have ever thought that about images on your blog – normally i love every ones looks. strange
LOL AT THE TITLE. U LOOKING FOR TROUBLE MATE?? HEHEHE. ANYWAYS, NEVER COMMENTED B4. JUST WANT TO SAY, AND I'M SURE U'VE NEVER HEARD IT B4 N I'M THE FIRST ONE TO EVER SAY IT (SCOFF SCOFF), THAT I FREAKING LOVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY, YOUR EYE FOR DETAILS, ETC
MANY DO WHAT YOU DO BUT VERY FEW HAVE YOUR ACQUIRED TASTE, REFINED CLASS ETC.
I CUD WRITE FEW MORE PARAGRAPHS AND SING YOUR PRAISES BUT THE CAPS LOCK IS HURTING MY EYE. I CANT SEEM TO TURN IT OFF.
TAKE CARE NOW, SCOTTY! sunita(now the caps lock works, aarrrrggh)
I noticed that someone who previously commented didn't like how young she dressed. But I have to say, even though she may be in her mid 30's, at least, Anna has this amazing young spirit and so it seems that she can wear just about anything she wants and make it quite desirable. She did a terrific job with this Jason Wu number and it goes so well with the weather in the photo. You did a great job capturing the moment.
.. WHAT AN AMAZING SHOT … love the light; on the dress, on the blonde ponytail … the pose, the moment … FAB SHOT … the black socks accent the jacket's trim, perfectly … knees, well hell, we all got em .. all fine by me … this makes up for Kayne, mon ami.
for all those who didnt like their attires: THEY ARE NOT JUST WEARING BEAUTIFULL DRESSES. THEY ARE MAKING A FASHION STATEMENT!! Totally appropriate for the occasion. if one of the most famous fashion editors can't do it, who cans????
Anna il like a godness for me…oh yes! She's perfect every time, she's creative (not as the other banal director like SOzzani, Wintour…) and her outfits are so beutiful that I need five minutes to watch them and, then, tell: wow!!
These women's outfits should look fun and original, and up to a point they do. But I keep feeling that they look a bit desperate, frantically trying to out-crazy everyone else, especially Anna. What's left for her to wear when she wants to pull out all the stops for a special night? Without restraint, how can there be excess?
Left side dress is way cool, but socks totally degrade the look. I believe Anna is probably a tad older than mid-30s, as one commenter stated. Her shoes are a total mismatch to the lightness of the feathers. They say that the legs are the last thing to go on a woman, but the knees are the first thing to go on the legs…spoken from experience.
Was watching Aarti Party, the new Food Network Star's debut show last weekend and she made this gorgeous coconut toffee.
It was white originally and she added just a drop of red food coloring to give it this nice soft pink hue and the color and textures of the dessert reminded me of Anna's ostrich feather dress which is equally scrumptious!
Her shoes speak for themselves!
But what I love most about this picture is the signature Sartorialist lighting in contrast with the beautiful subjects and the trees in the backdrop and people getting ready to go into a fashion show….
Oy, too much, that fluff. Maybe if she was on the stage presenting an award, but it looks silly in the light of day. The other gal looks great… from the knees up.
The outfits are really interesting and stylish, that's for sure. I particularly like the unexpected green belt on the light pink dress. But, I think that this pictures clearly shows that women above certain age should not wear skirt above their knees – it just doesn't look good any more. But that doesn't mean they can't look modern and trendy (in some other outfit). Am I the only one commenting on this?
This picture is interesting to me for several reasons. 1) I feel like ADR often wears head-to-toe runway looks, which look great, but are not very original. Part of having great style is interpreting the runway, and mixing and matching designers/styles of clothing. This outfit is more original that most outfits I’ve seen her wear. 2) Having said all that, I don’t think that this outfit is particularly great. And the shoes definitely do not work.
I learned about Anna on your site. I now check her blog regularly. I could eat her for lunch. She's like a sandwich of insane on two slices of hand-waving, rapid chattering fashion JOY. Team ANNA!!
Hopefully, this is a shot of Anna outside a fashion week venue. In my opinion, this is a cocktail/dinner night-only dress that is great but too much for daytime! As to the socks, and the outfit, just too much going on-like a little girl dressing in her mother's clothes. Sorry, I applaud innovation and individuality-a la Betsy Johnson, McQueen, but somethings don't work.
VERY SATC… Why am I getting tired of the elclectic-mixing-textures-style-colours like this? More and more, that whole genre is beginning to look fabricated. Ain't that weird?
they're looking so funny and crazy! black socks with heels is perfect combination but deep yellow coloro of socks would be better, the one of them looks like a chicken because of her dresses:)
She's clutching her forehead in despair, having just realized that if you must try waaaay too hard while getting dressed, erring on the side of interesting proportions and texture-mixing is far preferable to looking Carrie Bradshaw cutesie-boopsie.
(And what is it with the recent spate of comments about women's knees? They're just knees. They're kind of funny-looking no matter who you are. I may not like ADR's outfit, but I appreciate that she's not neurotically hiding what some might perceive as an "imperfection.")
I admire Anna for wearing the outfits that she does. I've been looking for something similar but a little more muted..perhaps a subtle top with wispy pink feathers..like what Carrie Bradshaw wore in Paris in the series finale, An American Girl in Paris.
Is that Whitney Port on the left? I love the black socks with the wooden heels!
As for Anna… those shoes are all wrong. The colorblocking, strappiness and stiletto heel all scream cheap and too disco for daytime. she needs something more grounded to weigh down those feathers!
I covet nothing in this photo…I think they both look silly and overdone, on so many levels. But they got what they wanted. I must admit though. Every day when I'm deciding what to wear, I think to myself….Hmmm, but, is this Scott worthy?" In a sense, they were both thinking the same thing.
Not my fave. Looks like girl's playing 5 yr old pink princess dress up. Although, I have to say colors are amazing in this photo, the fashion/style is not. Style is not determined by age, but Age can show true mastery of style. Not seeing these women mastering it this day. Reminds me of horrible sex in the city wardrobing. Ugh.
when i first was interested in fashion i would probably have said a big wtf no to this picture but now when i see it , it totally reflects their personality and individuality and i totally respect their confidence .
Sometimes what we love doesnt love us back! The pink dress is cute but so unflattering on her – and she has a great figure but this dress does her absolutely no favours. Loe the way its styled, but still, it's not flattering
Maybe the purple dress looks better from the front, but fro the back, it looks disjointed and trend driven (ratehr than style)
AF it is Fashion Week in New York! I am sure Anna doesn't wear this ensemble grocery shopping. However, when one person dresses as Coco Chanel so boldly proclaimed, "I can't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little, if only out of politeness." These ladies look wonderful in their front row seat inspired ensembles. They are dressing to impress, seem fashion conscious and most importantly feel great about artfully dressing. I am sure dressing as though it's an ordinary occassion is far from their minds. Well, it isn't an ordinary occassion. It is FASHION WEEK.
I fear the people around Anna are doing her no justice if they tell her that this dress looks good on her. I think she needs to accept the reality that she is maturing in age, and her personal style should reflect that, not fight it. There is nothing worse than watching a legend grip so tightly to the past that they can’t embrace the future.
To specify my comments further, I’m criticising the length of her dress. While she may be happy displaying her knees with a lower cut dress, it takes the youth out of her outfit and makes everything look tired, and quite frankly, it looks a little distasteful.
Anna has a wonderful figure, and I eagerly await future photographs showing her style developing and maturing with her body. Thank you to Scott and Anna for the many quality photographs, they are the inspiration for so many, and from all walks of life. I love reading the comments attached to these photographs, you have amassed a wonderfully little community Scott, congratulations.
Anna dello Russo is one of my favorites to watch during Fashion Week in NY. She is never boring. I adore her… That Jason Wu get-up is right off the runway! So bold, I love her!!!!
Patricia Field would have been so happy… I adore the sock-sandal detail, and the match betweet the high heel straps and the sunglasses… modelly.wordpress.com
Its odd but the feathered dress on its own is youthful and succeeds in aging her via contrast. Nothing wrong with being the age she is and I think she is really beautiful and stylish. Like some people said, she works in this world and is making a statement. Its probably hard to know when you are crossing into the ridiculous or doing yourself a disservice.
I'm not sure if I'm actually hurting anyone when I say this, but I don't like what Anna is wearing, it's just all funny and cheerful but to me, it doesn't have a sense of style. I'd rather go for the outfit of the woman she's talking with. But hey, who am I. It occurs that Anna has a lot of fans around here.:)
Anna is so amazing! She can pull of ever look, altough she is not a twentysomething girl anymore. It's such a shame she's not here at London Fashion Week right now!
To me, this just seems like it's been thrown together in a daze. It seems to say 'I know fashion, I know style, but I'm different therefore I'll wear some sack thing that looks like a flamingo'. It does certainly not seem effortless, charming or capture a mood. It only shows a certain desperation that comes with keeping up with fashion.
Well, I feel as if I must be from another planet or something because I think they both look plain daft. All this talk of 'beauty' strikes me as daft too, in the context. And I agree about the knees.
i think the gold and purple dress is just amazing while for annas outfit is not a like or not thing, i mean its a collction piece , you gotta be quite corageous to wear it! is just a staple , i dont think it has to be seen in such detail
I have to comment again…WHY DO YOU ALL LOVE CARRIE BRADSHAW CHARACTER??? Almost all men I know think she always looks clownish, especially with the silly hats-always overdone-as if more money than sense-"little girl dress up playtime" and, sorry,a great smile and eyes but SJP is not pretty, we don't get it. I'm all for pushing the style envelope (see above)and understand that woman may not care what a man thinks about it, but we react in subtle ways……………….
I love the fact that Anna is one of the few who just pick a look from the runway and present herself to everyone IN her way. No fear, just a breath of fresh air. Bravo!

When "Anna" is merely thought of as some gal from Podunk, her outfit is rather odd and pretentious.

Ain't that weird?

they're looking so funny and crazy!
black socks with heels is perfect combination but deep yellow coloro of socks would be better,
the one of them looks like a chicken because of her dresses:)

Ugh.

Best Regards,
Patrick
