On the Street……Arco della Pace, Milan

I think it is only a matter of time before we start seeing more below-the-knee coats.

The real trick to getting the right fit is not really the length of the coat but how it fits at the shoulders. A correct fit at the shoulder will be essential to keep from looking overwhelmed in a larger coat.

However, some people look for that feeling of cocooning that a giant coat can offer, like we see here and here.

“Sophisticated”? What do you mean? I don’t understand …

    • Martine

      March 30, 2013 at 11:38 am

I agree completely. Oversized clothing looks sophisticated. Its very fresh after all the overly fitted skinny sleeves we have been seeing. Well said.

        March 31, 2013 at 10:01 am

maybe we did not understand each other, I was referring to the red beanie. I would love know how sophisticated can be a common red beanie, that’s all.

OK. I will try to explain my thoughts; Just because its simple, and its a staple, useful item doesn’t mean its not sophisticated. It gives him a great pop of color, and helps emphasize the oversized proportion of the coat. Of course I doubt he gave it that much thought, because most elegant people simply know what goes. The hat goes great. That makes the outfit sophisticated. If the beanie was lying on the ground alone it would not be sophisticated, but here it is because of the whole thing.

I take note, but the adjective “sophisticated” I don’t think is the most appropriate in this case, imho.

I agree Martine. I was just looking at his beanie and thinking how many I’ve collected during my lifetime and don’t wear. Like you said, it really looks effortless yet gives a great pop of color and personal style.

Dear Scott, I am trying to think like you teached us to think but I don’t like this outfit. There’s no balance, no elegance although he is dressed carefully. It looks a bit nerdy. I think you can wear whatever you want but if there’s no balance it hurts the eye. Of course he’s still young and experimenting and I hope he will go on. I am 64 and still wearing heavy guyliner.

I love it all until the hem of the coat. I hate those skinny pants so much on everyone, just hate them. And then the clunker boots. Such a beautiful coat, beautiful beautiful, ruined by the clumpy footed twig legs. I just don’t get it.

I love oversized coats. This is a great capture. For one thing they are actually practical. The fitted coats with tight sleeves are next to useless because they can’t be worn over much more then a t shirt. An oversized coat cowes overt a jacket or a t shirt with equal comfort and grace. I especially like when worn with very short hair and ankles showing to get that great contrast so you see a revealed neck, graceful thin wrists and ankles. Its androgynous and sexy and just beyond cool. Can you tell I like this??

Scott, why don’t you ever ask the person where they got their coat from so those who read the blog can see in the flesh; the coat’s texture, fit and PRICE?
Especially since you have based this post around one such item.

Below the knee coats have been out of style? In the winter?
That’s a foolish trend. Good it’s coming to an end.

I am usually fussy about shoulder fit, but I like slightly big shoulders on a warm coat as you can but more jackets and sweaters under it when it is really cold. It’s an old fashioned look, I guess.

I’ve been noticing a trend in slightly oversized, architectural overcoats in menswears lately. Over time I see it, I pin it to this Pinterest board: http://pinterest.com/stylesquared/oversized-overcoats/

It’s a hard look to pull off. I think the key is for the coat to look intentionally oversized. Otherwise, it can just look ill-fitting.
