I wonder how common it was to wear midriff baring tops back then, probably not very. I wonder what the story behind that is, maybe she was a nonconformist and very adventurous woman. I was wondering, where do you get all of your vintage photos.
Thanks for the lovely comments. I sent this photo in a while ago and was really excited to see it get chosen. This is a photo of my grandmother Rita in Chicago, probably in the early 40′s. I asked my mother about the photo and the outfit and while she can only speculate, she suspects that this outfit would have been fairly adventurous, although not outrageous. In my mom’s words, her (Rita’s) mother probably wouldn’t have been very happy about it. Her family didn’t have much money, but she tried to be fashion-forward when she could and I’ve heard that she was a talented seamstress. Also, I was told that she was a big fan of Katharine Hepburn, which might explain the menswear trousers.
