Wau, she is beautiful, I just love her complexion, so fresh with a lot of freckles. Her dress is pretty, she looks like a heroine from a film, something "old" about the picture, or not old maybe, but Moviesque, if you get what I mean.
Btw, I bought your book a couple of days a go, and I totally LOVE it!!! The only picture that I miss in it, is the one from Paris last spring, a very amazing lady with jeans, a grey fur, and huge sun glasses, an the most amazing shoes. The book really opened my mind, and I started to like the way Garance dresses ( first I thought she was an ordinary girl ) but now I see her colors in totally different way. So i am gonna get a new color chart in my wardrobe, a lot of grey, beige and dark blue, instead of my black and bright color.
Was wondering when a Dubliner would show up. Beautiful beautiful image. Was so great to meet you and hear you speak so eloquently about your process and journey. Thanks for coming to investigate this fair land. Helen
there's a certain candid poise in her posture, and yet a bit of mystery to her as well. maybe it is the elegance of the pose (something in her left hand is a bit pose-y, though) jux'd with the fun of the dress.
Yay!! good to see Irish women on the blog, see we are stylish ;-), pls. pls. come to Dubai, lots of fashionable irish women for you to shoot here too :-)
I received your book a week ago and made a comment on my blog. Just wanted to say that I was surprised by the emotion of the photographs. Thank you for your work.
Beautiful portrait. I also picked up a copy of your book, amazing job on it. Your book tells a different story with every turn of the page, thank you for it.
I've been waiting to see what pictures you got in Dublin over the weekend! Love the naturalness of this girl, you have got to love our Irish skin, freckles and all, it's just beautiful! Really enjoyed your talk and getting to meet you on Friday. Hope there are more Dublin pics to come!
I find the Irish so intense and beautiful….love her blouse and the look on her face. Let me hop on that next plane to Shannon! http://wwwfuzzyland.blogspot.com/
My God. This is my favourite Sartorialist photo ever. It says as much about modern Ireland as Albert Kahn's photographs and images did for the early 20th Century. Just beautiful.
I'm delighted to see a truly elegant portrayal of an irish woman. I wish more irish women would embrace the pale and freckles. The tanned straightened hair is such a bore. Blathnaid's a real beauty.. such lovely skin.fa
I've been a silent reader and never left comments on your blog but THIS ONE – just moves me. Her skin complexion, the base colour of her blouse and that gorgeous tone of wine just come in unison. So easy, so tranquil. And yes, the freckles.. her most natural beauty.
Thanks for this image, Scott, you're a top, top man.
This is so perfect and feels so personal, like I'm sitting down to a glass of wine with her. I'm always amazed at how the colors in your images seem to complement each other perfectly. The green wall, her red hair, and the yellow of the wine. That rainbow leaf print is also great. :)
Very much a handsome Irish colleen…..could have stepped right out of James Joyce…….I'm looking forward to some more shots of Irish types……there's no shortage of interesting material…….you should have timed your visit for the Dublin horse show which would have provided a bonanza…..the horses look pretty good too.
I'm detecting a theme in these two great portraits that have popped up on the blog. Personally, though, the paper-white skin on the hand in the foreground is not aesthetically pleasing
You can just play with the camera. What a wonderful shot. You seem to bring out the very best in everyone you photograph. I am not a great freckle person ,but somehow this works. Scott, you are the best…
Though some may see this as a tad stereotypical, for me it's the perfect selection for your first published Irish portrait. She embodies everything I love about Irish women–the fair skin, the gentle countenance, the quiet confidence–and brings to mind every generation of Irish women I've had the pleasure to know.
Stunning picture that shows how freckles can be as flattering as the multicoloured pattern on her dress.
Was this taken at the bar in Harvey Nicks I wonder?
Your talk at the Gallery of Photography was really inspiring, thanks for coming to Dublin and hope we'll get to see some on-the-street shots as well :)
This is such a lovely portrait. The graphic print and primary colors play nicely against the softness of the light and her complexion. And the glints of light on the glass make it all perfect.
this woman is softly beautiful but it's the fabric, pattern and poppy red belt around her dress that i love. definitely a sartorial moment that i can emulate.
So obvious , so obvious, so obvious. My God. Ireland = freckles, pale skin, red hair and booze in the hand.
Nothing wrong with this woman. She's grand but this was just so predictable.
Interesting that after your heavily advertised rendez vous that there is only one photograph. I'm not sure whether the oh-so-predictable Maureen O' Hara hunt is a reflection on slim pickings or a total lack of imagination on your part?
This has to be the woman that Luke Kelly describes in his song 'On Raglan Road': "On Raglan Road on an autumn day I saw her first and knew, that her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue".
This lady is so beautiful. The mixture between freckles and this stylish dress make her look really sexy. If I woul be closer to Dublin I woul like to approach her and kiss her inmediatly.
Looks almost like a silk Kimono, the way the material flows. An ageless pose and almost Mona Lisa like expression. And the long, pale fingers on the bar, with the crooked pinky–the translucent quality of her skin hints at vulnerability that belies the mature woman pose, to my eye anyway.
What a beautiful girl. She has natural grace and elegance to spare. She actually reminds me of princess Beth Ruspoli, an irish descent American who married Italian royalty.
What a fab shot. Scott, how do you do it? She is not beautiful but yet you have managed to make her look good! This is prob someone you would pass on the street and not be impressed with. Yet, give Scott that camera and look what he can do. Thank you for all your wonderful shots.
I've been back to look at this picture about five times today. Definitely something special about it. Beautiful portrait – the eyes! And boo to whoever said the pale hands weren't 'aesthetically pleasing'. People come in lots of different colours you know – we're not all a WASP-y American beige. Well done, Sart, looking forward to more.
i know this may sound strange but this photo reminds me of india, or sould i say an elegant indian woman i once saw in the indian occupied territory of Kashmir – she was a native and she had red hair such a complexion and freckles. extraordinary . i wonder have u ever thought to go to india? do u have plans to travel and take photos of stylish people in the other half of the world? i would love to know!
"She is not beautiful"?! Are you insane, Anonymous?
I think some people are prejudiced against redheads. I've always admired how Irish redheads dress — there's no sense of apology or embarrassment (as there is in the UK or the US) associated with being pale and having red hair, and they know how to bring out the best in their inevitably beautiful complexions and gorgeous hair. There's more than one kind of beauty, and it's lovely to see it amplified and appreciated in this way.
Anonymous 1:23 PM "Scott, how do you do it? She is not beautiful but yet you have managed to make her look good! This is prob someone you would pass on the street and not be impressed with." –
Sorry anonymous but I disagree. Scott did not "make her look good", she looks great. She might not be what you think or have been conditioned to think is beautiful, but there is strength in her beauty. And I don't believe that Scott helped her to get dressed nor did he put that exact belt around her waist nor the make-up on her face nor did he ask her to wear her hair up in a style reminiscent of La Bardot.
She enabled Scott's camera to capture her personality and her FANTASTIC STYLE.
I cannot resist letting you all know her dress is Jean Muir. She looks stunning, but thats because of the quality of this human being. She is kind, sensitive, intelligent and creative, something we can all aspire to don't you think? And Scott how smart of you to recognize her qualities out of all the people you could have and did meet in Dublin. More of this please and less of the obvious that we can see in any fashion shoot or magazine.u
she is adorable… meanwhile, how many hundreds of thousands of women hate their red hair, freckles and fair skin? The three very things that make this classic beauty jump off the screen.
I too love her freckles. Can´t understand why so many who have them, wish to get rid of them. So nice to see freckles on her arms too. Really charming.
Sart, I am a little sad that this is the only shot you could come up with from Dublin. What annoyed me it was so typical…redhair, freckles. My guess is you had to search for her.Nothing to rave about but like always you do get the best out of every shot you take…
There is a lot of generosity in this shot – the perfect portrait need not contain all perfection – imperfections retain interest and leave scope for imagination…!
Thankyou!
(pst. The wine glass is complimentary in this shot.)
Wow, WONDERFUL photograph! Perfect lighting, very crisp. Love it. Also, dying for the dress… and the wine, for that matter. It's been a long day. http://www.nickiefrye.etsy.com
This is classy if I do say so myself. She even matches the table. Red lips, red belt, red hair, red in the shirt and a slight rosyness in her skin. Everything is slight enough to not overpower. This works.
Wow, she is a real beauty! I love this photograph by the way, it's so simple but intense and I love all the colours. My favourite photos on here in months! Hope there's more Dublin photos to come.
a stunning photo – she's really beautiful. She's so lucky her freckles didn't fade as she grew up! Even better that she hasn't covered them with tons of foundation. I thought only aussie redheads of irish and scottish descent got that freckley.
Ah, que hermoso! this is a very gorgeous photo, it just screams; Artistic. how can you pull it off to almost making everyday such a special, carasteristic photo?
it's a great portrait, for all the reasons that had been expressed above. funny thing is unlike a few posters, i did not find her to be the stereotypical irish lady, but just a great looking woman in a great photograph, who happened to have pale & freckled complexion and reddish hair, and was in dublin
I am reading some of the comments and had to laugh. Who cares if someone thinks she is not a raving beauty. It is a great shot end of story. Personally I do not like her dress at all. So what, I am only giving my opinion. Sart, gives 100% to all his work and honest he cant please everyone.
Blath means "flower, blossom."in Irish. In legend, Bláthnaid, the reluctant wife of Curai Mac Daire, loved Cúchulainn, her husband's rival. She revealed the secret entrance to her husband's fortress to him by milking her cow and letting the milk run down the hill into a stream. Cúchulainn followed the stream, raided the fortress and rescued Bláthnaid.
Phenomenal. Something about the way the play of color on her dress reflects the play of colorful freckles and red hair that makes this shot so perfect.
This is absolutely my favourite photo of yours ever (and I have been reading every day for a long time). It's so harmonious and graceful…I do hope that you'll be doing another book soon. I've come back to see this photo over and over again in the last couple of days and would love to have a print copy. Congratulations!
It's a funny thing. You shoot style and fashion, and you get high credit for that. I think, though, your best work are portraits. These people feel so very palpable but so completely ethereal at once.
This is my favourite picture of yours. She is natural and relaxed. The colours are just so beautiful. I'm so happy to see she has embraced her beauty and not tried to change it. Pale skin, freckles and flowing red locks are gorgeous.
The thing about this picture is that I don't know what makes it great. Is it the dress she's wearing? Maybe. Is it her pale skin and freckles — quite possibly. Is is her poised expression and perfect lips? Is it the white wine as a reflection of all of that?…
Stunning. Thrilled to see some o' the Irish. I'm hoping the dark, wall planks behind her indicate a true, Irish pub – the wall really makes her beauty pop. Would love more Ireland if you've got it. ~CGD
Dublin doesn't exactly get a lot of press when it comes to fashion, but I spent two weeks there last year and saw so many wonderfully stylish, non-tourist women. And so many with fab short haircuts. I fell so in love with the city.
don't care for the dress. but who cares about a dress! this is a stunning photo! love it! looks like a masterpiece oil painting fell out of a museum and somehow turned into a photo! where's your signature, Scott?
Beautiful capturing of her flawless skin. The linear qualities of her arms/print shirt contrast with the curvature of her face and wine glass. Great, great photography!

Looks almost like a silk Kimono, the way the material flows. An ageless pose and almost Mona Lisa like expression. And the long, pale fingers on the bar, with the crooked pinky–the translucent quality of her skin hints at vulnerability that belies the mature woman pose, to my eye anyway.
Nice shot. Makes me want to buy the book.

Hurrah, proof that we're not all orange!

"Scott, how do you do it?

Yes, it would be her name.

The thing about this picture is that I don't know what makes it great. Is it the dress she's wearing? Maybe. Is it her pale skin and freckles — quite possibly. Is is her poised expression and perfect lips? Is it the white wine as a reflection of all of that?…
Maybe it's just a damn good photo.
