Scott did you happen to find out where this sweater is from? Also, I bought your book a couple of weeks back and I must say it's one of the best purchases I've made in a long time! I love your work.
Great composition and color-palette, of the photo, that is.
The gentleman's choice of attire however, is questionable: What not to wear? Perhaps if he tucked in his shirt and unroll his jeans, AND did not wear those socklettes with is top-siders…?
I don't know what qualification I have to disagree with the satorialist, but this isn't that snazzy to me. Yes, nice and unique cardigan, but does it go with the rolled up pants? Ray bands are overused, and the rolled up pants bring attention to shoes I don't think are that unusual. They could be jcrew dock-sides for all I know. And the socks look like too-big no-socks. I think the pants, and how they fit, mostly throw everything off. everything is loose, attention is taken to the feet. I don't like.
Waist up, like it. Waist down, not so much. Although the shoes go great, the rolled up pants make him look skinnier and shorter. Albeit the colors are great. He wears nautical well.
I don't know quite how I feel about this. Side part, goatee, Wayfarers, Deck shoes, denim shirt, high waters, and grandpa cardigan. That's a lot to take in! And it is possible that he just got off a boat!
Like his style . . . and his vintage camera. Also really appreciate your composition in this shot. The stripes on the road and the geometry of the building are a great backdrop.
The Bright Red Shawl Collar Cardigan sings when contrasted with the Blue Denim shirt. What has two thumbs and approves of this look? (Points at myself with thumbs) This guy.
This guy looks like a total fashion victim to me. I mean, come on….absurd, unflattering combo. And if one is going to go 'sockless' then dont let your black 'sockless socks' show out of the tops of one's shoes.
Oh and BTW: THE YANKEES ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES !!
This outfit is rather simple… and i think the main accessories here oughta be the wayfarers and the camera! The attitude with which he's walking down the street… ah, that makes for a perfect picture. Also, I love the Cardi!!
i want to like this look as i've seen similar, yet subtler coats (ala theory apollo) but the excessive accessories, mixed with the overly cuffed jeans and socked dock shoes all brew a sense of desperation.
it's quite unfortunate, as i do appreciate the coat's silhouette. just don't overdo it with the extra knick knacks and we're set.
in new york especially where contrivance, usually showcased by tourists yet still cringed by many locals, less can still be more.
AHHHH????? Why do I feel like I know this guy! This is going to bother me! Did/does he go to Parons? Anyways…loving the look & his sweater! >>> swoon <<<
The perfect fall combination – turn up jeans, loafers, and a nice chunkie cardie. Possibly one of the last chances he'll get to wear this outfit in NYC this year.
As others have said the composition of the photo is sublime.
Shoes are great, glasses are ok, and the use of color admirable. The gentleman's style, however, is not in my taste. The sweater is distasteful, the presence alone of the socks is off-putting, and the color seems more of an afterthought. Denim on denim is hard to pull off and I'm afraid he doesn't do it well. Top button fastened and rolled up jeans? It's just odd – and in a bad way. The vintage camera does make me smile, although I hope it is intended for use and not as a necklace.
His outfit looks awful. The sweater looks like on made for a woman. He is wearing a denim shirt, with denim pants. And what is up with him rolling his pants up like they are capris. Women wear capris. not men!
it's exaggerated. not a big fan. isn't it actually denim and wool. looks like a wrangler or levis denim under the sweater. needs to drop the trousers and pair with boots not new age boat shoes
I perfer topsiders with rolled up or cropped pants it just goes with the scheme. They were first fashioned for boating and I think he has the right idea! Every piece he has on could be a staple in my wardrobe!
I am not thrilled about the pairing of the denims with the red sweater, the sweater fabric, the rolled up jeans or the shoes in any combination…
But what bothers me most about this photograph is this man's posture. Even if I don't like the outfit, to me he is also not wearing it with any kind of style – I mean to say that there is nothing in his being, the way he walks or the expression on his face (plus the backpack, ugh) that exudes a confidence needed for this "quirky whole foods" look… Instead I see "awkward high school ceramics teacher."
whats up with the Ray Ban glasses, they are everywhere like the swine flu???? i mean these glasses are everywhere !…it really shows that were really a bunch of SHEEP!
I appreciate the individuality of his outfit but it doesn't quite work. makes for a nice photograph yes, but not a good outfit.
The red cardigan, denim shirt, and cuffed pants clash too much in their uniqueness. a different shirt (possibly light blue or some other light color) and maybe roll the pants down just a little and it could work.
I don't mind the ankle socks so much, just need to change their color, black isn't working.
RE: “Isn’t he wearing a girl jacket?” What that hell is a “GIRL JACKET”? And, WTF if he is!!! Maybe this blog isn’t for you… sheesh… And, if you are such a traditionalist, you’d know that the buttons on “boy” jackets are on the right, making this, in fact, a “boy” jacket… oh, brother…
When I was a kid – maybe 7th grade – my sister found some shoes that tied on the side that I recall as looking like what I might call now “Cuban”. My niece wouldn’t wear them because they were “boys’” – I wouldn’t wear them because they were “girls’”, but ended up wearing them anyway and loving them. Now I’d kill to find a pair like that.
As far as what this guy has on – agree that the shirt should be tucked in. Would love to know what he was thinking when deciding to roll the pants – the weather, fashion… what, exactly. Personally I don’t get it, don’t like it, and think it’s best suited for the beach.

nice cardi and shoes but something is wrong with his overall look. maybe he's stylish but he's overdoing it.

1. the jeans is rolled up too high.
