Look at Renata, she looks great. When I dream about what I'll look like when I reach her age, this is what I see. Her attitude is fantastic, and to me she is saying "Look at me! I am not afraid to express myself the way I want to and be damned my age or what others think". She is my hero! This is it, I'm buying the pair of Harness Boots I've wanted for the past year, enough with the constant age appropriate talk. One can mix it up and still dress with hipness and style at any age.
I agree with you. She is fabulous. I am tired of women lying about their age and denying their greatness and beauty, trying to turn back the clock when it just isn’t possible.
I think the key here, as with most of your shots of slightly older men/women you shoot, is her swagger! Talk about keeping your head high! All these people have the look pf someone who is not afraid to live and loving every minute of it! Keep it up!
the look is very distinguished but somewhat contrived – i think real style has a degree of effortlessness, nay even laziness and imperfection, an easy carelessness. She has that in the upper part of the photo – look at the macbook carried so carelessly without a case! But the only thing that brings it from careless to contrived is the single bootleg deliberately tucked in. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it looks to deliberate and loses the flair of reckless abandon..
This is the best photo you've posted in a long time — it's completely inspired. Just by looking at this picture, I know she is who I want to be when I'm her age. s.
Scott, I think your next book should be with some of the people you shoot regularly, but with interviews about their thoughts on life, style, etc – I am always fascinated by how people choose their certain look, whether it is to my taste or not. Renata looks great both ways!
david – i'm taking a guess, but i don't believe the one pant leg tucked in, and one out is deliberate. i just started wearing some mid calf boots myself, and interestingly, I've found that, more often than not, one of my previously tucked pant legs will often wiggle it's way out of solitary confinement and into the wild south area of my boot. just one. weird.
…is that car approaching from the rear gonna stop in time???
isn't that coat a Max Mara from several years ago (think so because I own it), and it's the MOST luxurious mix of fabrics…feels like a fur coat almost. I'd love it if you'd use first AND last names–then if I don't know who they are I can google them and find out.
i really like how she still looks elegant, even with quite a nonchalant look. she's such a woman with style! amazing haircut, too. everything's so perfectly places, except the cigarette. duh.
I love this photo. Renetta certainly demonstrates that it is not clothes that make the man (or woman), but the style in which he or she wears them. Her flair for the dramatic can be seen in her pairing of the coat with a colorful scarf tied ever so wonderfully in a devil may care fashion. The suede boots hilighted by beiing partially tucked in a pant leg. And finally, that gesture of her "free" hand extended with a cigarette while the other one is carrying a notebook. This is a Jean-Luc Godard moment, for sure.
some peole have style and some peole merely pretend. This woman is surely the real deal!
She is great but I agree with the bathrobe comment and add the boots to it it looks like she rushed out of the house – but her attitude takes care of it all!
I agree with lintmag that a book featuring your regular subjects would be fascinating. Witnessing someone's fashion sense (and sensibility) on multiple days reveals a lot about one's character.
But here's the real lesson I've learned from your work: Why not showcase personal style every day? Why be lazy about grooming or aesthetics or individuality?
I have a friend who, like your subjects, looks sharp no matter where he's going. He dresses for himself, not for any occasion or any trend. And people notice. Whenever I'm with him, strangers always comment on his cool shoes or his handmade bikes (that he builds himself in his "free time").
He looks like no one else. This Renata looks like no one else. Your photos highlight personal style and inspire everyone to cultivate their own.

She is one of my favorites of this blog! The glasses, hair, coat, lipstick, are all great, but best of all . . . she looks comfortable! No 8-inch high dominatrix shoes or clothes she can't breathe in. Now THIS is chic.
Dare I say there is to me, romance in her boots? Utterly herself, she is. And with all that loose clothing – the juxtaposition of her stance appears to capture a rare individuality; just take a look at her posture!..; )

She is one of my favorites of this blog! The glasses, hair, coat, lipstick, are all great, but best of all . . . she looks comfortable! No 8-inch high dominatrix shoes or clothes she can't breathe in. Now THIS is chic.

She looks so good. This is how I want to look when I get older.. Btw, the way she holds her cigarette is exactly the way "Cruella DeVille" holds it!

Dare I say there is to me, romance in her boots? Utterly herself, she is. And with all that loose clothing – the juxtaposition of her stance appears to capture a rare individuality; just take a look at her posture!..; )

Love the hair! Even though it's a more mature look, it's also more sophisticated. Her confident expression says it all.
