Isn’t this the same woman as in the yellow shorts? The pictures sure look similar. What is the coffee to go controversy? I don’t get that. Its the same lady, I think.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone in Italy, especially in your photos, drinking coffee on the go. I feel like that is a very ‘American’ concept, whereas the norm in Europe is to leisurely enjoy a cup of coffee out of a MUG at a table in a cafe.
Please tell me this was early morning…that’s the ONLY way you can come close to justify the coffee in her hand. If Italian coffee culture dies, I will mourn for the rest of my life….and I’m usually a tea drinker!
It is slightly unusual from my own experience in Italy (mostly Florence and Rome) to see people on the street with paper coffee cups! Much more congenial to have an espresso at the bar. But. Starbucks reigns, no?
well.. im not from USA and in my country nobody goes to a Starbucks and drink their coffee while they are walking.. they buy the coffee and then maybe they go to another place.. an office or drink in the same Starbucks.. I’ve never get that thing od drink coffee while you go to another place.. so weird.. coffee have to be enjoyed!! same with other beverages as tea or mate
as someone with ties to both france and the US i love coffee to go. because i don’t want to be stuck sitting at a cafe or worse at a counter, gulping down my espresso because i’d rather be walking around seeing the world around me, or sitting in a park. i think there’s room for both.
I think you nailed it! Every part of her is black and white (nails, glasses, dress, shoes, toenails, too!) admiring that colourful display. Shades of The Wizard of Oz. :)
The only one single thing that seems unusual to me is the paper coffee cup that this lovely lady is holding in her hand!! Which reminds me of starbucks that unfortunately does not exist neither in milan nor in the rest of the country..is it because i really miss starbucks’ coffee?? But, sincerely, it is quite rare to see someone around in milan having his/her coffee in this way..
The disposable coffee cup in her hand? (I feel like I never see them in Italy. People stand up at the espresso bar and drink, standing, from a regular ceramic coffee cup, right?)
1- Why is she wearing her plastic pool shoes and a Chanel bag?
2- Why is she having Starbucks in a paper cup in Milan, Italy?
3 – Why are the lights on in broad daylight?
Shower sandals in public? I’m laughing at all the “incredibly small cup” comments from the Americans. Where I come from that’s a normal size, if you order espresso to go then you get the really little cup.
Amazing setting, and I am guessing the same as almost everyone else – the to-go coffee cup. What’s worse, it looks just like the cups we have for coffee at work. Maybe this photo isn’t from Italy? ;)
Zhenya http://beingzhenya.com
Is her skirt stuck to her purse or is that slit meant to be there? Hard to tear my eyes away from her beautiful hair long enough to check out the rest of the photo.
is there a Sturbucks in Milan? I hope beacuse I loved Sturbucks coffee during my last USA travel. So dressed and with that hair she looks like Ali MacGraw in Love Story…!
Everything she is wearing is black and white but she is looking at a window display full of colour, probably not what is unusual about this photo but couldn’t help but notice.
As Rocky McCorkle has already noticed she is wearing all black and white (even her hair is black) and also her surrounding is entirely black/white/grey (except the golden plates). It seems like she is looking into and longing for a different world full of color. Nice contrast!
What an enigmatic question to what appears to be a very straightforward photo.
I have searched and searched – left to right, top to bottom, diagonally, vertically, horizontally… this is like those word games where you have to find the last word in the grid of dozens of letters (not a crossword puzzle), and you can’t find it — and you know that it’s probably staring straight at you.
The legs! There’s something very esher-esque about her legs.
Her body angle doesn’t accord with the way her legs stand.
It almost looks like her legs are crossed but they’re not…
One of her legs is shorter than the other and both her feet are too long :)
Its the same woman as in the picture below with the yellow shorts. Again looking in the window of a store. The one with the tattoo on her foot. Seriously, are people blind? Or am I crazy?
Carrying a coffee cup on the streets of Milan? Wouldn’t have guessed it…
I got lost deciding whether or not I liked her shoes… haha (I do BTW…)
But of course, coffee to go in Italy, very unusual…
Cova might be (have been) a bastion of Italian coffee culture, but it was bought last year by luxury conglomerate LVMH.
Is the paper cup an (unwelcome) side effect of globalisation?
I agree with Scott. It’s strange…It’s a disaster! What Scott has noticed isn’t a good new. True Italian coffee is one of the best things that our country can offer. Why should we become like in the U.S.A. or in other places? No, it isn’t a good new.
That’s funny, the only thing I noticed “amiss” was the coffee cup, so I guess I was right. In all of my time spent in Europe, I’ve never seen anyone walking around with a coffee cup in their hand, like you see everywhere here in the States. (Although I’ve seen Starbucks in London and in Paris!) I wonder if this is going to become a “thing” in Europe.
C’mon!! this is not coffee-to-go, I mean, the cup is too big, this must be a cappuccino-to-go. that means, cappuccino take away, when you’re late and you can’t stop or you want to bring a cappuccino to a friend (I used to do it a lot with my roomate!!). it’s not so unusual, it’s simply a cappuccino on the street. Every good cafè in Italy has this kind of cups!
We also have coffee to go in Europe. Actually I’m from Spain and yes, we also use it (not only from Starbucks) and we don’t drink always “Cafe solo” or “Cortado” sitting at the bar !
You can also get REAL american coffee to go nonetheless (crazy I know) at The Bagel Factory that is run by a man who moved to Milan from Boston at the Porta Ticinese. As well as lattes and the likes to go as well. Saddening, but true.

Everything she is wearing is black and white but she is looking at a window display full of colour, probably not what is unusual about this photo but couldn’t help but notice.

What a brilliant conversation starter!
I think the lights are on during the day.
Looking forward to the unraveling of the mystery

It’s simultaneously frustrating and fun.
And I can’t wait to hear the answer!

Her dress has a small tear in the back? It could be a romper or a slit but I couldn’t think of anything else :)

One of the window display spotlights (the bottom one) is pointing the wrong way – outside rather than towards the window display.

She is watching a bag, and the bag is staring at her in return!

Is it the light (shadow) or are the soles of her feet very dirty. Still, when you are this beautiful, who cares!

May 26, 2014 at 8:50 am
C’mon!! this is not coffee-to-go, I mean, the cup is too big, this must be a cappuccino-to-go. that means, cappuccino take away, when you’re late and you can’t stop or you want to bring a cappuccino to a friend (I used to do it a lot with my roomate!!). it’s not so unusual, it’s simply a cappuccino on the street. Every good cafè in Italy has this kind of cups!

I actually thought it was the monochrome of the girl vs. the colourfulness of the window she is shopping. But the take-away coffee makes sense :-)
