i like the old couple, but i hate her fur…
September 5, 2014 at 5:51 pm
The fur is older than she is. It’s one of those neckpieces that were so popular in the 30′s?

Nice photo, the couple is so chic !
April 9, 2014 at 4:28 am
maybe he came by bike? – nothing is more annoying than having the trousers caught and soiled by a bikes mechanic parts
April 9, 2014 at 4:45 am
What great photo, just got to love everything about it!
April 9, 2014 at 4:47 am
I’d vote that he tucked because he was cold.
April 9, 2014 at 4:54 am
The socks match to the rest of the outfit though so my guess is this was an intentional move. I’m a fan of the colour combination for sure :) http://www.madelienerose.com

Do you think this gentleman has his underpants tucked over his pants, underneath his overcoat?
April 9, 2014 at 5:01 am
I think he probably just got off a bicycle.
April 9, 2014 at 5:06 am
Maybe he was like “Geez, my ankles are feeling a little breeze, better tuck em in”. Or “Dang, the colour of my socks go so well with my outfit today, but my pants are too long! Better tuck em in”.
I think it looks kinda cute! I have a slight problem with the edge of the lady her boots sticking through her pants though, that’s just inexcusable ;)

Good point, a good sock tuck will save any oil marks on your trousers from a bike chain, that’s the only time I see a reason for it.

Hi Scott. First off, I’d just like to say how much I enjoy your website – the shots are always inspirational, and a pleasure to look at each day.
I just have a question on when you post your pictures. According to your posts on the 8th, they are from Florence, New York and Paris. I’d love to think that you got to all these places in one day, and if you did, then well done, but i was just curious on the process you go through when deciding to post. Your pics tend to be more about “style” than fashion (in my eyes, at least), so is it more about when a pic feels right to you? Do you have a back catalogue of shots that you might add when you feel the time is right. I guess its the “on trend” images that I’m most interested in. Are the people genuinely on trend at the time of taking, or are the pics being held back until such a time that they are actually suitable/relevant
My apologies for such a long post, but I am just trying to get a deeper understanding, and once again, I really do enjoy looking on your website and instagram pages, so many thanks

Nick – Scott is not posting based on chronology, obviously. He takes the pics from various travels, and, I’m guessing, posts them according to flow of visuals than the calendar.
Agree with your comments – more about style than fashion. When he covers the fashion shows, then it’s fashion-o-rama!

Maybe he does it when riding a bike…
My father told me he used to do it in fifties to protect his trousers.
April 9, 2014 at 5:57 am
My first thought was that perhaps it was his solution to too-long pants? BTW I saw this just yesterday in D.C. – perhaps it’s a trend in this demographic? :)
April 9, 2014 at 6:20 am
Maybe he took the bike earlier that morning. I often see french men putting their trousers into their socks when they take the bike,…he might just have forgotten to take them out again.
April 9, 2014 at 9:34 am
My thought exactly.
April 9, 2014 at 7:31 am
probably biking, or imitaing the old scholl biker’s style.

Interesting style, calls atention

How to wear tartan trend?

Up here in Albany, we tuck our pants in our socks when we’re going hiking where there are ticks. Or when bicycling. It was fun to think of fashion and other reasons pertinent to NYC! :)
April 9, 2014 at 9:42 am
For bike riders how about a piece of cloth with velcro to wrap around the pant legs. After riding just stick it in your pocket.

Another great shot from behind! Applause

Am I missing something?????
April 9, 2014 at 11:44 am
I think he always dress this way. I have this feeling watching at his shoes…love this pout pourri of combinations….I think they are a couple…artists…intellectuals…
April 9, 2014 at 11:59 am
My father refuses to wear long underwear and does the sock-tuck when he’s cold (and since he’s often wearing loose corduroy pants and short, slouchy jackets, ends up looking like a hobo cossack, to my mother’s great annoyance). My bet is that guy’s also fighting off an unfriendly breeze.

A man has his reasons.
April 9, 2014 at 1:44 pm
That fur coat is so nice.
April 9, 2014 at 1:53 pm
i love that her sock-situation is kinda reversed to his, with the outline of her boots showing under her trousers :-D
greetings from germany!
April 9, 2014 at 4:02 pm
I love that too ! I wonder if they were intentional. Either way it’s kinda great
April 9, 2014 at 2:10 pm
Most probably because he rides a bike… but i like to believe/imagine its because of the strap colour detail in the shoe (top)…goes along with the coat! ^_^
April 9, 2014 at 2:34 pm
They’ve been married too long. She decided to wear her slacks over her boots. He decided to be contrary and wear his pants under his socks. No need to speculate.
April 9, 2014 at 3:02 pm
I wanna know why she didn’t tuck her pants into her boots!
April 9, 2014 at 3:51 pm
Such a weird couple…they look sweet except for the fur coat!
April 9, 2014 at 9:00 pm
I like the fact that he tucked baggy pants into socks, and she has taken her what appear to be leggings and stretched them over her boots. Makes me laugh either way, seem like a fun and maybe ecclectic couple/friends.
April 10, 2014 at 1:03 am
I think he’s wearing some very interesting shoes. He’s no cyclist. lol
April 10, 2014 at 4:31 pm
Cyclist for sure !

I am not sure where you are getting your information, but good topic. I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more. Thanks for great info I was looking for this information for my mission.

I’ld venture to ruin the fashion mystique by porporting that this unexplained sock tuck is anti embolic stockings (ted compression hosiery) which is not designed to be worn fully 24/7. While walking the man rather than removing and applying the stockings (a small feat for a health care worker, quite possibly a true challenge for a man of advanced age) he doesn’t need the stockings fitted appropriately as he’ll get the edema under control. wearing the stockings over the pants provides a little bit of breathing room.
Sometimes fashion is functional.

I adore this photo!

when I saw this picture I thought of my parents and how sometimes they don’t care how others view them in public. I find this particular picture very funny because my dad, age 70 does the same thing: put his pants in his socks (once in a while). one day I asked why and his answer made sense. he said, “these pants are too long, and I don’t want them dragging… plus it keeps my ankles warm.”
