I LOVE this chair. The photographer that I am is always looking for something fun to stick out and pop in photos and this would be that something. I cannot wait to finish my studio because I will be looking for pieces like this for my sets! LOVE

this chair stood out cause it’s awesome not because it’s blue! :)

I love that chair, love the colour and style!

The great thing about Modernist furniture is the use of color such red, orange or in this case blue to visually enhance the shape, and to add punch and excitement to a rather neutral palette.
However, that chair is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen… suggest you search out Knoll, Herman Miller, Turner, or the hundreds of great furniture designers/manufacturers/showrooms in NYC
December 11, 2013 at 6:21 pm
this chair was designed by one of the great furniture designers… hans j. wegner.
December 11, 2013 at 11:31 pm
too cool :)
December 12, 2013 at 6:44 pm
That chair is a classic! Quirky yes, but ugly makes you sound like you don’t know much about mid-century design…
December 29, 2013 at 10:05 am
That is the Wegner “Papa” chair!!! One of the absolute great and most collected pieces of furniture of the 20th Century!!! You suggest he search out standard corporate Knoll and Herman Miller? I suggest you read some books and get an education about design, because you do not have an “eye.”. Holy crap, your comment is hilariously ignorant.

There is something too be said for stepping outside your norm to liven things up. I had a Miller-inspired chair and ottoman reupholstered in orange leather and never looked back–it goes with everything and nothing at the same time and works because I committed myself to it. I do browns and tans.
The upholsterer was this older man that was convinced he was going to talk me out of doing such a crazy thing–I could’ve bought a decent used car for what it cost, but I still love that doggone chair.

Really love the form and color!

But you could by this chair for function! It’s really comfy! My parents got these chairs;”Bamsestol”(Bamsestol means Bear chair) by danish designer Hans J Wegner.
This chair is a perfection- beautiful design and the color is just delicious-reminds me of macarons
Scott you won’t regret it. This shade of blue works beautifully with soft neutrals. Grey, taupe, mustard, beige. It would definitely act as a focal point in any room. I would suggest however, that you repeat the colour in a small dose somewhere else for a little balance. Perhaps a vintage hand made, ceramic vase or pot, a painting or a cushion. Enough to break the fixation on this spectacular piece.

Who can resist a chair called the Papa Bear? Designed by Hans Wegner in 1951 and looking better than ever, today.
December 11, 2013 at 3:12 pm
Nice chair, it is so beautiful in blue!
December 11, 2013 at 3:35 pm

love this chair. looks like it belongs in George Jetson cartoon…..
December 11, 2013 at 3:58 pm
It is the Papa Bear armchair by Hans Wegner originally designed forthe danish company AP Stolen. We bought one many years ago. It was so comfortable, I used to take naps in it (if that isn’t functional ?) We really liked it much. Our cat did not. So we had to let it go – the armchair not the cat .

Oh Yes! Love that colour blue and the design of the chair is fun so why not combine them for a joyous piece for the home. Gorgeous. B

Great chair. Pappa Bear by Hans Wegner
December 11, 2013 at 4:16 pm
Few chairs reach the level of comfort as the Hans Wegner Papa Bear chair. If it is authentic (not reproduction) please do buy. It will make you happy for life and will increase in value for your children or for charity when you die.

Gotta love a Wegner Papa Bear chair. Chairy on Pee Wee’s Playhouse was based on this chair, as well.

I LOVE that store, my BF and I visit every time when we’re in NYC. They have a lovely selection. The color is great, and I adore the wooden details on the sides.

Reminds me of my Gimson & Slater Rock N’ Rest chair! I love it.

You have discovered an iconic MCM (mid century modern) chair! It is a classic. Not only is it a fabulous design but it is very comfortable. Buy the chair!
December 12, 2013 at 7:27 am
Oh enough with the grey and beige non-choices. let the color in!
December 12, 2013 at 8:31 am
It looks sturdy enough, I think it could be functional and beautiful at the same time.

Papa Baer…is the name of the chair…the most comfy one.
I knew you have a very good taste ;-)
I have one waiting for me at my house on the lake in Switzerland.
Almost the same color.

reading all the replies with the word “functional” in it… it’s like they are whispering in your ears “buy it… buy it… buyyyy ittttt” no? :)
December 12, 2013 at 7:29 pm
We can make one for you in any fabric you’d like, Scott!
December 13, 2013 at 7:23 am
what an amazing chair!
December 13, 2013 at 1:23 pm
It looks like it’s waiting for a hug.
December 13, 2013 at 2:17 pm
I love the little dance going on between the wood tones and the blue. And it looks very comfortable. A wing chair, but with an airy, light feel to it. What I find interesting is that everyone has commented on the chair and no one so far has responded to your question about colors. I have been wanting more color in my wardrobe for a year or two now, but not doing much about it. Do you think it is a response to the economy?
December 13, 2013 at 4:25 pm
It’s well know that when we go from black and white to color.. It means we are returning home to our true nature… xo m
December 14, 2013 at 4:04 pm
Maybe it the scandinavian in me talking, but grey (or even more so beige) seems like too much color for your house. White is all you need.
December 16, 2013 at 1:58 am
Love the Wegner chair. You should see some of Finn Juhl’s or Peter Hvidt’s designs as well. These Danish furniture architects are the creme de la creme when it comes to interior design, and their colour palettes are stunning.
White is definitely not all you need! (this is the ultimate misunderstanding within Scandinavian interior design, although understandable since mastering colour within design or fashion is quite an art, but worth every effort)

I have so many fond memories of this chair because I grew up with one, it came in to my life when I was 3 or 4 years old (I am 60) – my parents decided on a very warm red colour for it because they felt that their living room would otherwise be too dull with all the grey, white and beige tones that were so dominating in scandinavian homes in the fifties. And yes, it´s so comfortable that you can actually sleep in it! They only started manufacturing it again in recent years, until the you could only buy it second hand, like the one in your picture. I sometimes gaze at this chair in the window of Illum department store in Copenhagen, and I can tell you that it is VERY expensive :-)
