The movement and almost odd position works. Clean black outfit (love the short hair) while everything around her is sort if worn away.

Where does one find such an elegant, simple crossbody bag in the US? Everything I see has zippers this way and that with distracting dangles that could be misconstrued for rabbit’s feet. Honestly, the simplicity and discipline of this ensemble is so very refreshing.

Love this city, beautiful people. Stayed down the street from Orange Sq. on the Shevchenka. Hope you head to the Lva Tolstoho Square a hidden Restaurant in a park with great beer selection not to mention the food! Arena City is the place to been seen late night, but the street sight seeing in amazing…

he looks like a nice guy. i appreciate admiring one’s sneakers. but i am really falling out of love with skinny jeans and jeggings. i think it’s an oversaturation that’s doing it. our appropriation of jeans as everyday wear was a great and important thing but the “tights” can’t be the only iteration.

Man! Looks like you, Scott, are trying so hard to click the ugliest places (that each city has) in Kyiv. This city is such a beautiful historic place. Disappointed with each next pic of yours shot in here. Except for that magnificent Turgenyev girl…

This photograph is so unique. At first I wasn’t sure exactly what I was looking at. Love how her criss crossed hands match her looks. Even though she is sitting there is still so much movement in this picture. Great shot!

I live in Kiev and I think you captured the city perfectly. This is an incredibly poor country with a shocking wealth disparity. I think there is way too much focus on the few incredibly wealthy and the women walking around looking like tacky transvestites. You captured the gritty and the beautiful perfectly. I will leave this city after two years and this photo in particular captures this country dead-on. Read the t-shirt and you have the government and the oligarchs. Look at this lovely boy with his slender style and you have the power and beauty of the poor but elegant masses.

How fortunate for you, I am sure Kiev is a lovely city. However…Its a girl, not a boy pictured here, and she is wearing some rather expensive items( I have those Nikes with the black leather around the laces. They are not absurdly expensive, but they are over a hundred USD. I also have her pixie haircut and I know how expensive it is to keep it up. I almost never have mine so freshly cut), so it throws considerable doubt on your observational ability as you aren’t distinguishing male from female OR wealthy( at least middle class) from poor.

How funny. I have that exact haircut ( anyone that thinks its easier to have a Pixie like her must have oodles of cash and live next door to a haircutting place…), and those exact shoes. I also stretch out like that! Wish I had that bag though. She looks very pretty, simple, stylish, and immaculately put together. I kind of wonder if she is a dance student.

Anonymous postings make it so easy to leave a cutting response to my comment. This picture is tagged “androgyny”. I have no shame in assuming this was a boy because it doesn’t really matter. I also am not implying that this someone who is poor. Ukraine is a very poor country with a shocking wealth disparity. This picture captures the contrasts found her very well. The photography got some crap for taking pictures in front of gritty urban areas and I think this is nonsense since this is a gritty city. As for the pixie haircut, her friend may have cut her hair. As for the shoes, this is not just Europe but post-Soviet Europe flavored by the excesses of oligarchs. He could have taken some photographs of far more expensive shoes. As far as I know, that isn’t the point of this blog.

I don’t see any flack about photography to defend anywhere above. Ukraine maybe lots of things…but there is no shocking disparity in this photo The person is neither rich nor poor. I think thats the problem anonymous was pointing out; That your comment made this girl( who you thought was a boy) a poster-child for the disparity of which you spoke, this beauty of the “poor but elegant masses”, yet she is not one of them.
