It’s three years since he was demobbed but he’s still drifting and he knows it. As for her, he’ll do until either a better job or a better guy comes along. Right now the hot sun and the smell of popcorn and the raucous shouts of the crowd is enough for both of them. Later, they’ll go dancing and wake with the sour taste of too much whisky and too many cigarettes in their mouths.

Those are my grandparents. They just celebrated their 64th anniversary. The photo was taken on Rockaway Beach in NYC a month after they met.
August 12, 2013 at 12:05 pm
I liked Rebecca’s story better.
August 12, 2013 at 5:57 pm
Your grandfather is an incredibly handsome man! Great photograph and lovely to know that they went on to a long and happy relationship (after all, you don’t spend 64 years with someone unless you’re happy!).
August 14, 2013 at 7:23 pm
When I saw them I thought ‘she’s not letting go of him!’. To me, her arm stretched back and holding him close in is letting the world know she’s keeping this one… Even though she looks relaxed otherwise. I’m so glad it turns out she did keep him. I’d feel that way too if I were in her shoes!

64 years my ass. Do any of you know how to count? It’s been only 37 years since the photo was taken (1978), if -as you say- it’s been taken only a month after they met.
August 13, 2013 at 11:54 am
i’d love to know the story behind the photo :)
August 15, 2013 at 2:57 pm
Not what I see at all. This is a slick urban couple. Totally committed and comfortable. Just because they are sophisticated and sexy doesn’t mean they are some sort of degenerates. They are both equally gorgeous, and well matched. They do look like they know how to have fun, and smoking and drinking doesn’t seem out of the question, but with friends, and to celebrate life.
Oh well, I suppose what some people see says more about them then the picture and that explains Ms Rebecca.

Love the vintage photos! This one is great because there is so much going on around them as well.
August 10, 2013 at 10:43 am

Cool hair for him, cool bikini for her!

Reminds me of the early cigarette ads : “Take a puff, it’s Springtime”

1948, three years after the War . Look at the background .
Is it the South of France (Nice)? Maybe the USA.
Smoking was “healthy” then.
August 10, 2013 at 10:52 am
The vibe, the location, the fashion. I love it all.
August 10, 2013 at 11:07 am

Looks like a young and better looking Nicholas Cage!
August 12, 2013 at 9:50 am
Thought the same, just missing a snake skin jacket. Also think she looks like Barbara Stanwyk……… :) Cool pic.

Yes! For a second, I thought she WAS Barabara Stanwyck with a movie star I couldn’t identify.
August 13, 2013 at 5:30 am

August 10, 2013 at 1:51 pm
I love these vintage photos, they have the power to make me feel nostalgic about times I did not live!
August 10, 2013 at 2:11 pm
Did people seem much more alive then?
August 10, 2013 at 5:55 pm
It certainly seems like it, right? It also seems, they were more stylish or at least put more effort into their look, which is odd, because they probably had less resources than we nowadays have.
August 19, 2013 at 11:07 pm
They had more money then we do as far as disposable income goes. They also worked fewer hours, and were able to do the one income family and still provide more then we do now. So they had it easier.
August 10, 2013 at 2:39 pm
I like it.
August 10, 2013 at 3:37 pm
What a beautiful photo…
August 10, 2013 at 4:21 pm

August 10, 2013 at 5:38 pm
Love vintage photos-and that man is very nice-looking!!
August 10, 2013 at 5:58 pm
super race photo for the time, no? the physical contact, the size of the suits, her smoking… that it looks sexy now means it must have been very, very racy for the time.
it’s so easy for us to forget that the old people we see now used to be young once too – and broke rules, had sex, drank, and partied before they had families and children and jobs and obligations.
August 10, 2013 at 6:35 pm
They are so fabolous
August 10, 2013 at 7:20 pm
Absolutely frame-worthy! Everyone was so put together back then, great picture!
August 10, 2013 at 7:34 pm
What a gem, adore the high waisted bikini bottoms!
August 10, 2013 at 8:13 pm
Trends may come and go (e.g., smoking, for one) but fitness is fashion.
August 10, 2013 at 10:31 pm
Amazing photo! So sexy…so much there. I love it.
August 10, 2013 at 11:10 pm

Please can we have a vintage photo a day? Or maybe another blog just for them. They’re amazing.
August 11, 2013 at 5:58 am
The photographer should have caught her at a better moment than this.

Lovely! Even Instagram (and every other photo app) can’t top a real vintage photo. http://www.flaircat.com
August 11, 2013 at 12:17 pm
Hi Scott, in the past your vintage photos had brief descriptions of the people represented and the possible location, however your latest posts do not. Do you not have them for these? It makes it so interesting to speculate when we at least have the country of origin etc.
August 11, 2013 at 5:48 pm
Whelp, I’ve got brief description and location for you: This was in Rockaway beach. They’re both native NYers; before they got together, she was a child beauty queen and he did a brief stint in the navy. They’re still happily married and have a handful of grandkids (one of which is me).
August 11, 2013 at 4:46 pm
I wonder if he knew how handsome he was.
August 11, 2013 at 5:10 pm
The photo is of my parents. It was taken just weeks after they met in the summer of 1949. Location is The Rockaways. They married a year later and are STILL happily married. My handsome dad is now 86. My beautiful mom will turn 88 this December. There are many more photos of them from that era. They are still a fabulous couple!
August 11, 2013 at 6:34 pm
great vintage photo! love the high waisted bikini
August 11, 2013 at 6:48 pm
she looks like a tough Giulietta Masina and he is a gigolo from a Fellini…film
August 11, 2013 at 9:37 pm
An amazing couple brimming with life who manages to be effortlessly so stylish, so hip, so cool, so in love… From what their grandkids and daughter have commented here they have been married (happily I hope) for 64 years now.
Sadly a wonderful species in via of extinction!
August 11, 2013 at 11:50 pm
Dora, he is my father and my two sisters and I agree that he did not realize how handsome he was (and still is). He takes his beauty lightly and happily, and he’s delighted we’re all so proud of him and my beautiful mother.
August 12, 2013 at 9:54 am
A beautiful couple Barbara. Only just saw your name…… But as soon I saw the lady in the photo I thought Barbara Stanwyk.

Vintage photos subtly reveal history

He reminds me a little of Nicholas Cage in this photograph.
Very of and in the moment photograph.
August 13, 2013 at 12:44 am
Back when smoking was cool….
August 14, 2013 at 7:35 am
There’s something very actual in this pic ! Perhaps the ways they smoke …
August 15, 2013 at 2:51 pm
Very sexy couple. Love the high waisted bottoms, the high cheekbones, and the totally comfortable way they are all over each other without being childish . Gotta dig that 40′sshaped hair too. Makes me wish i lived in a Noir movie.
