i know that clutch: margiela x h&m, right? :P
September 18, 2013 at 3:33 pm
Pretty sure it is from the Margiela Spring 2010 collection, not the H&M re-editions. (via. http://www.thebandfrom.com/maison-martin-margiela-candy-clutch-wallet/2010/03/)

The details in this shot are nice showing all the accessories but the sandals (?) are super ugly and paired with those socks? Atrocious.
May 29, 2014 at 3:02 pm
I think they are perfect. And really cool. I absolutely love the ortho-chic sandals. But they aren’t for everyone.
July 24, 2013 at 9:03 pm
Ah we see the sock-sandal combination again! This is a striking pairing of color and texture. Great style.
July 24, 2013 at 11:50 pm
socks and sandal scandal!

Those look like MBT sandals. Never thought I’d see those here. At least he’s getting a nice calf workout while he walks.
July 24, 2013 at 9:56 pm
Awesome photograph! I adore the wine color of his shorts.
July 24, 2013 at 10:06 pm
Nooooooooooooooooo wrong on so many levels, really socks and sandals and I have never been a fan of any white shoes any which way. Too mini mouse for me.
July 24, 2013 at 10:22 pm
i think the way you approach this changed on whether you’re thinking shoe + sock, or the textures, colors, silhouette, etc…
July 24, 2013 at 11:25 pm
a s l o w “fashion” day in florence…
July 25, 2013 at 12:00 am
I feel like you’re trying to get us riled up with this. I smiled.
August 6, 2013 at 5:13 pm
Me too. I thought `What`? This must be a joke
July 25, 2013 at 12:20 am
Somehow this all just works! Love the colours
July 25, 2013 at 1:51 am
No, sorry. A huge no. In my country socks and sandals are seen like something worn by old german tourists, which for some reason wear them also with 30°.
I think they’re incredibly unflattering.
July 25, 2013 at 2:08 am
aaargh… man or woman? Anyhow… I would sweat with These temperatures (that was the polite Version of my thinking :-))
July 25, 2013 at 2:13 am
Haha, no sorry. Nor for me. Reminds me of a German personineer. On the other hand – everybody is into Birkenstocks right now, fashion just comes from the most unexpected directions…

I love it. The colors are right, the accessories are great together, and from what I can see of his shirt it also fits in nicely.
I love it, but not because it’s a combination I’ll repeat any time soon.
I love it because it’s out of the ordinary, it’s thought out, it’s daring, it’s individualistic, it shows he cares and wants to express something, even though that may be he’s a fashion junkie.
July 25, 2013 at 2:23 am
Is it a man? Love the clutch!
July 25, 2013 at 2:25 am
hahahaha sweet !!!
July 25, 2013 at 2:41 am
….visual attack, run for shelter! I can’t deal with Jesus sandals…but hey, it’s a free world :)
July 25, 2013 at 2:42 am
Wrong! There’s a first time for everything and this is the first time I can think of nothing but… wrong!
July 25, 2013 at 3:06 am
Oh my God are those MBTs? I hoped I would never have to look at those again…
What is it with Fashion’s obsession with ugly shoes?
So this is the fashion formula now: take a horribly ugly piece of clothing/accessory (such as MBTs or very baggy 90′s jeans etc.), wear it with the latest prada or some statement accessories and there you have it! Style!
Nowadays more people than ever follow fashion and can afford to cheaply wear the latest trends and learn how to dress well by reading magazines, blogs etc. and so people in fashion who always need be ‘different’, edgy, above normal society and more ‘interesting’ than the average person, turn to wearing ugly clothes to get the attention because it is getting more and more difficult to stand out in fashion.
And what is your opinion on that, Scott? I would love to hear!
July 25, 2013 at 4:27 pm
Interesting take. In considering the absurdity that seems to have become fashion, I never considered the argument you make that it is driven by the fashion elite’s insatiable need to stand out.

these shoes and socks are fab! so cool
July 25, 2013 at 3:57 am
Ah, the socks with sandals look, “very European”. Growing up on the Australian coastline we could always spot tourists because they were wearing this combination!
July 25, 2013 at 4:01 am
In Poland a lot of men wear this way ))) I thought it is only Polish speciality )))
July 25, 2013 at 4:07 am
This could be male or female
July 25, 2013 at 4:09 am
Generally I don’t like the idea of socks and sandals, but this – it kinda works.
July 25, 2013 at 4:20 am
Grandma knits some socks? Toddler fashion, perhaps? These are way too clunky and would look SO grimy after a day of hiking around city streets.
July 25, 2013 at 5:34 am
love the bracelets!
July 25, 2013 at 5:47 am
Beautiful. Great day.
I love the rest of the outfit so much that I can forgive the shoes…
July 25, 2013 at 6:08 am
I love the photo and it’s a great look from top to ankles but those socks in the sandals are just a huge no for me…
July 25, 2013 at 6:33 am
I kinda like the way you start off on the page and it looks interesting and then you scroll down and it is like tiny fists punching your eyeballs and then you scroll back up and everything is good again.
July 25, 2013 at 7:07 am
That’s interesting, but no, definitely no. Especially in July, being very hot here in Italy and all…

July 25, 2013 at 7:40 am
Bof bof, pas terrible !
Not a good look on anyone, in my opinion. But…to each their own! He obviously likes the look!
July 25, 2013 at 7:48 am
I’m sorry but this is just horrible imho. Hyper fashion bling bling mix plus ortho sandals with socks, absolutely killing me.
July 25, 2013 at 8:09 am
nice socks horrible sandals!

absolutly NO socks and shoes….
July 25, 2013 at 8:49 am
Less is more. This is just awful.
July 25, 2013 at 8:56 am
The bag is amazing, but I don’t like shoes.
July 25, 2013 at 9:01 am
Really ugly sandals and socks?? OMG noooooo!!!!
July 25, 2013 at 9:35 am
I will NEVER like socks and sandals-it defeats the purpose. Plus it’s sad that some (myself included) cannot even determine the sex of this person.
July 25, 2013 at 10:07 am
Woven socks in summer? o_O
Bag is gorgeous but shoes and socks… they just suck :/
July 25, 2013 at 12:46 pm
The socks make a good connection between the aubergine shorts and the bulky white sandals. In this sense, it works. But seriously, these sandals, especially when combined with socks like this, are just the opposite of elegant. I don’t dig this.
July 25, 2013 at 12:50 pm
I can’t get on board with this trend. Ever.
July 25, 2013 at 1:28 pm
Well……. It’s colour coordinated, but outdoor wear has no fashion potential, everrrrrr.
July 25, 2013 at 1:48 pm
Photo framed to protect the innocent… and guilty. Function cannot always equal fashion, but props to this person for interesting socks, rather than none at all. I guess?
July 25, 2013 at 2:21 pm
Oh my. I thought only people from Oregon (where I’m from) combine socks and sandals. Guess we’ve been fashion-forward for decades.
July 25, 2013 at 2:48 pm
Hmmm … all I can say is why?

July 25, 2013 at 6:42 pm
Snaps for the courageous fashion efforts but I just can’t get done with active sandals, especially with a sock.
July 25, 2013 at 7:43 pm
ahhh NOOOO! i thought we were done with mbt!

July 25, 2013 at 9:46 pm
Is it only me or is the “clutch” actually a pack of vacuum sealed coffee? it looks exactly like the packs from my local roaster.
July 25, 2013 at 10:47 pm
I wince everytime I see socks with sandals, but at least this version is interesting! xo
July 26, 2013 at 1:10 am
About 95% of russian men, different ages wear socks with ugly sandal. It looks more awful than on this photo.
These sandal with socks can be called beautiful than russian men wear in capital of Russia Moscow.
July 26, 2013 at 7:23 am
‘Wrong’ on so many levels is an understatement.
July 26, 2013 at 4:59 pm
Sorry but the sandal and the socks are double ugly.
July 27, 2013 at 7:12 am
July 27, 2013 at 1:53 pm
Mmmm okay, it’s both. It’s so tacky and unexpected that I could see it looking chic, as long as he wears it with confidence. Fake it till you make it, buddy. And I DO like his juxtaposition of genres…

Socks and sandals even look bad in Florence.
July 28, 2013 at 3:01 am
Man or woman? Either way, it’s not working….
August 2, 2013 at 9:53 pm
Surprised to see how the above comments are Anglo centric (e.g. examples of how Dutch, Russian, American old men where socks with sandals).
Having lived in Asia for many years, I saw this picture and immediately guessed it was someone from Asia (e.g. Japan or Taiwan). Ugly chic is the order of the day in cities here w/ a lot of 20-30s.
***Scott please satisfy our curiosity and reveal this person’s upper half (or at least country of origin!)
August 3, 2013 at 9:01 am
Picture those sandals with white shorts or long white pants ,no socks ,and a killer tan …I could rock that look right now .
August 8, 2013 at 1:10 am
I bet he’s Asian.
Love the socks and the Margela for h&m bag.
August 8, 2013 at 10:17 pm
Love it! I would not wear it, but it seems comments are missing the point a bit: there is no way anyone realistically thinks this is a 70 year old pensioner. So what, he’s wearing socks and sandals, but it’s all totally tongue in cheek! Come people.
May 29, 2014 at 3:05 pm
Yes. Absolutely. People here would probably have looked at Curt Cobain, seen his flannel shirt and thought: “Ah! A lumberjack!” Thats about how much sense that kind of thinking makes. Clothing has completely different meaning depending on who wears it, and no one would think this was a old person that needed comfort shoes.
August 13, 2013 at 10:22 am
I have seen this style (socks+sandals) here in paris pulled out by some of the trendiest people i know. The tradeoff is, its is offbeat but if you somehow manage to pull it out you’re a god, basically.
This asian guy is not, nowhere close. The socks are great, but the sandals are clunky, offensive and the white colour unflaterring. There’s a fine line between ironic and bad taste.
Oh and therte is no such sthing as grandma style. Many so-called grandpa stuff are incredibly popular right now, and basically style is style, be you 20 or 75. I swear my grandpa was more stylish than 99% including me.
August 25, 2013 at 12:24 pm
No. Just. No!
May 10, 2015 at 10:17 am
You’ve got to be kidding! I used to work with a 75-year-old editor who wore these shoes to work everyday. In NYC. This is not fashion unless you’re in assisted living.
August 17, 2015 at 12:11 am
Like art should do- it sparked a response!! And a debate! The artists intention is still up to us to poder. But I BELIEVE, this photograph is not about the clothing at all! It is about the composition, The left heavy composition is off-set by the negative space around her body most notably between her legs in her wide stance. Its mysterious – only half the woman shown. I really like the story this picture inspires. Composition and like someone else said; textures.
