    • Darrell

      May 15, 2013 at 5:34 pm

And exactly WHAT is your expectation of privacy in a public place?
Still I’m thinking that Scott got a signed model release just in case this moment in time makes its way into another of his books.

        May 20, 2013 at 5:25 pm

Public space or not; would you like to have photos of you splashed all over the internet without your permission? I sure as hell would not. We are all in the public space on a daily basis, but we still have some right to protect our image. There is a matter of what is legal and our right and what is just fair and polite. Sometimes the latter should prevail. Having said that, I am sure Scott got her permission for this exquisite photo.

      May 15, 2013 at 8:37 pm

I know Beautiful, but I wonder the same, Did she know about that photo?

I know it is a public space but you’re not expecting that somebody is taking photos or videos to you, would be nice to let her know I’m sure he did :D

Or maybe I think too much about the limits of privacy :P

    May 15, 2013 at 11:08 am

This is a beautiful shot, but I, like ‘CBC’, wonder about the privacy issue here. It seems wrong to photograph someone when they’re sleeping and vulnerable. I hope you got her consent…

    • Sanatha

      May 15, 2013 at 1:42 pm

I understand your concern and I somehow share your thoughts.
However, and as the lady was obviously asleep, I doubt Scott interrupted her to ask for her permission… and let’s be honest, it would have spoiled this “slightly” intrusive, yet candid and cute moment.

      • Issy

        May 15, 2013 at 8:53 pm

I agree with CBC and Ms. Pea (about privacy and vulnerably moment)

and also I agree about ruining the moment by asking her for the pic, but, still think would be nice let her know after that, but how to? hehehe Somebody takes a picture from you without your consent and then interrupts your space awaking you hehehe. Hmm I don’t know. I would rather know.

    • Martine

      May 16, 2013 at 11:54 pm

Except there is no reason to assume privacy out in public. Thats simply silly thinking. If someone feels vulnerable being looked at when they sleep then they best do in somewhere where everyone is not free to look at them. I hope he didn’t bother getting anything like permission for something that she is obviously permitting everyone on the street to do. I also hope that people start thinking a bit more and “feeling” a little less. Nothing is intrusive about taking a picture of something that is out in public for everyone to see. For some reason your “concern” feels very incorrect and un Constitutional.

      • Sandra

        May 17, 2013 at 4:04 pm

I agree with CBC and Ms Pea, this is invasion of her privacy as beautiful as the photo is it is clear that we are NOT allowed to use peoples pictures or videos without their consent. That fact isnt rocket science and Issy your comment about thinking more and ‘feeling’ less is offensive, because if you ‘think’ more you would know why candid camera’s make you sign consent forms n so on. Her sleeping in public is not her asking for her picture to be taken…

      • --

        May 17, 2013 at 4:34 pm

I know, is silly to expect privacy on a public space (totally agree and understood), if you dont wanna be seen asleep or in embarrasing situasion like this then don’t do it or at least try to avoid it and even more now that seems we live in a exposed world.

It just like, for instance, somebody dies in the middle of the street, the graphic journalist are in their right of taking pictures (although you dont like it) , is their job, but I just feel sorry for the family and for the person who have to be exposed in that horrible moment. Is a public space.

So I know public is “public” but deep inside me still would like some politeness from people even in public spaces hehehe.

But this is a fashion site, so yes, I do love the picture and of course the outfit :)

PS. I sure she don’t give a damn about it.

These kind of photos are more interesting, I think. As opposed to the photos of people simply standing facing the camera (although I’m not saying I dislike that kind of photo). There was another photo recently of a girl holding a mirror which I liked because, like this one, there was a real sense of spontaneity.

Such a funny response, LesFleurs – just the kind of thing my mother would observe! However, I think the girl may be lying with her arms on her bag.

I love that you can feel the warmth of the afternoon sun here. It is like you are actually standing across from where the lady has fallen asleep.

This photo reminds me of one of my favorite paintings of Vermeer’s at the Met, “A Maid Asleep.” http://www.metmuseum.org/Collections/search-the-collections/110002331

I love this description: An overdressed maid has dozed off after entertaining a visitor. The painting above her depicts Cupid unmasked, an oblique explanation of her dreamy smile. Radiographs show that Vermeer originally painted a man in the background and a dog to the lower right. By replacing these motifs he made the amorous theme less obvious, quite as his remarkable passages of observation obscure his debts to contemporary painters like Nicolaes Maes.

Vermeer would have made an amazing photographer because, like you, he knows the importance of light in telling a story with an image.
