This is a great portrait, and she meshes so well with her surroundings. To hell with the social construct, people should just do what they do!
April 15, 2013 at 12:18 pm
Comfy and fresh look with a nice background!
April 15, 2013 at 2:29 pm
I agree, freedom is a must! Even if the desire is to look like the others brazilian girls with long hair….Helooooo!!!!

Never. I have never seen walking shorts worn with quite that “loose as a skirt but comfort of a pant” look. I like it!

Rio is amazing!

Indeed, she’s so natural and fresh! :)
April 15, 2013 at 10:11 am
I love good style that resists the norm of the area, not only will these folks stand out but it’s a welcomed breath of fresh air visually! Thank you!
April 15, 2013 at 10:17 am
Simple style at its best! No need to add more when you are that stylish…
April 15, 2013 at 10:31 am
Her outfit is simple and beautiful! I love the mix of grey and beige, and the bermuda is so cool!
She’s stunning! Great (hair)style. Makes me proud to have short hair as well!
April 15, 2013 at 10:32 am
so casual and easy
April 15, 2013 at 10:34 am
Love, love, love this! It’s the kind of simple & sophisticated casual look I aspire to.
She’s beautiful! Definitely one, who looks great with short hair. I love the beach backround. Makes me wish for summer even more.
April 15, 2013 at 10:43 am
it looks like you lucked out having her to help you- I’m sure she had lots of good local fashion information for you

April 15, 2013 at 10:48 am
She looks awesome. Cute as as can be. And as I like EVERYTHING that goes to the natural waist, I like her twice as much. What a nice small waist it is, too. I wonder where she got them. Might be vintage. What a total doll.

Hi Nathalia…nice shot!
April 15, 2013 at 10:54 am
I’m not crazy about espadrilles, but all the rest is effortlessly chic. I really like her hair (and the landscape).
She looks fabulous! Reminds me a little bit of Yasmin Sewell :-) xxx
April 15, 2013 at 10:57 am
I really like this look, I don’t know what it is, but there is something that makes it special. I have never seen a pair of short so cool, you are right!
April 15, 2013 at 11:11 am
April 15, 2013 at 11:13 am
She looks great, but these shorts wouldn’t look half as cool on a heavier person.
Isa tout simplement ...
April 15, 2013 at 11:26 am
Simple but lovely !
April 15, 2013 at 11:29 am
love the shorts, never see a good look with that shorts but this is great!

I’m totally with you. To me all the girls are trying to be the same, same hair, same clothes, same shoes, same bags…same same.
Girls like her makes me happy as well Because style is personal, exclusive and happends in a natural way.
In Brasil the girls prefere to show the body with no elegance most of the time, they prefer to be a hot chic and not classy at all.
Blerr tired os fashion in Brasil…

Gah! So jealous. It’s still snowing in western canada. I love that she chose a wedge sandal instead of a flat.
April 15, 2013 at 12:10 pm
She just looks so effortlessly comfortable and cool. When it looks like you aren’t trying is when you look the most stylish…Nathalia totally proves that.
April 15, 2013 at 12:17 pm
Any time a woman cuts off her hair, it stands out. On a global scale, women have long hair.
More women should take into account what suits them individually.
April 15, 2013 at 12:21 pm
Comfortable and stylish! Great shorts!
April 15, 2013 at 12:33 pm
I absolutelly love her shorts. Do you know where did she buy them?
April 15, 2013 at 12:34 pm
She is very cute, her simple outfit is actually very chic
April 15, 2013 at 12:50 pm
that’s the kind of neck that the Hope Diamond was made for! Long and beautiful!
April 15, 2013 at 12:51 pm
The shorts are appealing because they don’t scream sexy. Besides, this woman is wearing the shorts in a very feminine way. She has nice legs and is showing them off with her pretty sandals. This must be a refreshing look in Rio, where skin is on show on the beach 24/7.

Dear Scott, I love this cool feeling photograph although its probably not cool at all outside. This woman’s outfit reminds me of what we were wearing in the 80′s san’s shoulder pads. I used to have a pair of Bombay Britches and a Khaki striped sailor t-shirt that I paired together until they died from overuse and of course Unisa Espadrilles. Thanks for another look at Rio. Kathleen
April 16, 2013 at 12:26 am
+1, these look a lot like my precious WW2 surplus Bombay bloomers which I’ve been wearing since 1989! I just replace the Breton shirt every few years.
April 16, 2013 at 2:41 pm
How can I purchase them?????
April 15, 2013 at 1:13 pm
very stylish and comfy look.
April 15, 2013 at 1:15 pm
In Rio, where most women are doing the “babe” thing – the long hair and bright colours – she must have seemed refreshingly different. I like her calm neutrals and how you set up the shot, where she fits in nicely with the beautiful backdrop behind her.
I was also totally distracted by the gorgeous mountains behind her. It makes me miss Vancouver very much.
April 15, 2013 at 1:20 pm
I am on the hunt for perfect walking shorts like hers. Now you have increased my want for these! :o)
April 15, 2013 at 1:46 pm
I grew up in Rio de Janeiro and I disagree that short hair and simple/minimal/neutral styles are rare in that city. Not sure if going there a couple of times for fashion shows gives someone authority about the Rio lifestyle. It’s a humongous city with a relaxed vibe, where women barely wear makeup and would rather tone down their outfits than risk being tacky.
April 15, 2013 at 4:42 pm
I live in Rio and I think exactly like you.
April 15, 2013 at 7:22 pm
I was about to write a comment asking a question: and what if there were plenty of women with a similar style, but no one notice because all the media attention is on the “hot” babes (God, do I hate that adjective – “hot”) ?
So your comment make me wonder if my guess is right …
Anyway, I am jealous of woman wearing shorter hair, either because they look great with a short crop – like this woman does – or even if they don’t, they still have the courage not to care.
April 16, 2013 at 2:47 pm
Obviously Scott was there, so his comment means that No. There simply are not many women who do this look. Nothing to do with media attention as he was on the spot. Funny .
I love the word “hot” actually. It makes me think that I am raising the temperature in truth. Its one of my favorite compliments. But I see what you mean. Especially if it is directed at people other then myself it could seem like too much. Or maybe its jealousy.

The ankle straps add a chic accent to a simple style.
April 15, 2013 at 2:11 pm
Great Shot !
These shorts look amazing on her!
April 15, 2013 at 2:12 pm
Hi Mr. Schuman, I think the most you love about this picture are the colors she´s wearing because are “basic american way of life colors” for me, grey, khaki, deep brown, all together, and the “simplicity”of all this.
April 15, 2013 at 2:14 pm
she’s beautiful, love her style
April 15, 2013 at 2:36 pm
She does make those shorts look cool! What a gorgeous gal!
Elegant and simple!! Great outfit, I love her spadrilles!

April 15, 2013 at 6:06 pm
You’re the one that truly describes how Brazilian women dress… they do not know whta “style” or “appropriate for the occasion”mean. Instead they only care for what the others are wearing, or the “novela”(soap opera) stars wear, or the funk artists wear. Those are the guidelines for fashion in Brazil. Pity.
April 15, 2013 at 6:12 pm
she is such wonderfully shining women – I also had the chance to photograph her ^-^
so happy about it* thank you nat!

April 15, 2013 at 10:54 pm
I agree with Valeria and Dani from Brasil. In Brazil fashion is run by the soap operas. Nobody tries anything different. I get really tired of it sometimes. I wish fashion here were more like other countries. Congratulations to this brave girl. She looks wonderful!
April 15, 2013 at 10:58 pm
Yes! Very cool!
April 15, 2013 at 11:06 pm

Used to have shorts like that from Ralph Lauren when I was 16.
Have to go and dig in my old wardrobe:)
I agree with someone above, it’s a very american look.

Love to read your thoughts about short hair – your assistant has my hair! She looks a bit European, if I may say so… French, timeless, classic, chic! And her espadrilles! Great.

April 16, 2013 at 2:50 pm
Grr. Everything vintage from the 80′s gets bought up so quickly I can never get my hands on it. They are vintage, obviously. So sad.
April 16, 2013 at 3:18 pm
Same thing here in Peru: a girl with a short hair is a rare bird!
April 16, 2013 at 4:35 pm
As commented before in general you see there much more mimic playing into styles instead originality. I’m brazilian living abroad and walking against brazilian beauty standard by choosing my freestyle wear and I’ve keeping my hair short. That was a great shooting outside cliché!
April 16, 2013 at 6:04 pm
Great photo and what breezy style she has. Love that her shorts are a little fuller and loose. Look terrific with the espadrilles to balance them out.
April 17, 2013 at 11:42 pm
Funny you say girls in Rio don’t usually have short hair! I’ve been living in Rio for two months and what I’ve notice is exactly the opposite. Also, I desagree that “simplicity is not a common approach to fashion in Rio”. Maybe you just have been looking at the wrong places. Whenever you come to Brazil, try circuling around Puc-Rio and you’ll figure style in Rio is not that easy to define. This is a great shoot, anyway!
April 18, 2013 at 5:22 pm
Whoops my mistake shot 1 is not Yasmin, she is her double. Apologies to both Natalia and Yasmin.
Time for my eyes testing!
April 18, 2013 at 7:22 pm
this is such a lovely and brazilian shot. But if you want a real mix of styles next time came to São Paulo too.
April 19, 2013 at 4:28 am
Such a gorgeous laid back look…
April 23, 2013 at 8:58 am
Contrast creates beauty. It is refreshing for someone to step away from what is generally accepted. However, don’t hate the norm too much. Those who ascribe to some form of tradition are creating the environment wherein our creativity stands out.
April 28, 2013 at 12:03 pm
I love her shorts. She looks incredibly relaxed yet put together. Does anyone know where you can find similar shorts?

Part of brazilian ladies don’t like short hair. I really love it, and I’m brazilian.
I love to be different from everyone around me. It’s so cool!
